What are the five best amenities at The Sanctuary at Kiawah Island Golf Resort?
When you stay at The Sanctuary at Kiawah Island, prepare for some pampering: Every time we turn a corner at this Five-Star hotel, we find a new luxurious amenity that makes us love it that much more. Though it proved to be quite difficult, we've narrowed down the Sanctuary's five best amenities:
1. Turndown service. Whether you are coming in from a long day on the beach or golf course, there is nothing better than returning to a room that's primed for bedtime. The curtains are drawn, soft music plays from your nightstand radio, your comforter is turned down, robes wait on your bed, the lights are dimmed and a pleasant, soothing smell pervades the room. You'll be dozing in no time.
2. Complimentary bottled water and fruit. When you arrive at the hotel, you'll find bottles of water along with fresh fruit in your room. The refreshments are a nice pick-me-up after a long flight; after some noshing, you'll be ready to explore all that Kiawah Island has to offer.
3. Balconies. Forget about using a sound machine to hear the melody of crashing waves; you'll get your own ocean soundtrack at the luxury hotel. Every guestroom has a balcony or terrace where you can enjoy the view and breeze off of the water. The balcony is the perfect place to enjoy your morning cup of Joe or just listen to the peaceful music of the slamming waves.
4. Free shoe shines. Don't worry about your shoes getting scuffed on the golf course or your loafers looking worn for your meeting; the Sanctuary at Kiawah Island gives out complimentary shoe shines to all guests.
5. A pool for adults. Sometimes the kids need a break from the parents and, more often, vice versa. The luxury hotel has a separate adults-only pool where you can have a quiet, relaxing tanning session or swim. Meanwhile, rowdy children can frolic in the family pool and play around with the hotel's water toys.

Five things to know about The Sanctuary at Kiawah Island are:
1. To provide a view of the tide breaking at mid-tide, more than 500,000 tons of dirt were trucked onto the island on which the hotel was built to raise the entire first floor from six feet above sea level to 21 feet.
2. Before the dirt was brought onsite, the resort removed all of the current oak and palmetto trees. After the hotel was finished, the resort transplanted over 160 live oak trees to create an entrance that appears to have been in place for centuries.
3. Raising the level of the hotel allows it to have a tunnel system so guests will not see carts (other than luggage carts) and maintenance equipment moving through it.
4. The hotel was designed to look like the grand beach house of a rich Charleston landowner.
5. The structure uses traditional Charleston building materials in its construction, like slate roof tiles, oversized “Charleston” brick and wrought-iron-looking balcony railings (iron would rust in a seaside environment so aluminum was used).

At The Sanctuary at Kiawah Island, take a seat in the Four-Star Ocean Room's fabulous bar to down delicious signature drinks. Our favorite is the Kiawah Island Iced Tea with locally made sweet tea vodka, gin, rum, tequila, sour and cola. The sweet tea adds a Southern slant on the traditional Long Island iced tea cocktail. You can also sip on a refreshingly crisp martini prepared with Hendrick's gin, dry vermouth and cucumber. Though you may want to play it by ear to see what kind of concoctions the bartenders are mixing up that day. In case you don't have a taste for cocktails, a variety of wines, import and domestic beers, Scotches and liquors are on offer as well.

As you climb into your room's custom two-poster bed, you'll know exactly why the hotel is called The Sanctuary at Kiawah Island. The dark wood bed comes with a plush mattress that allows you to drift off into a world of utter relaxation. The cloud-like mattress is part of Master Sleep's Luxury Comfort Premium Collection. It's topped with classic white sheets and pillowcases made by Liddell, a noteworthy manufacturer from Ireland. Each bed is adorned with a cluster of decorative pillows that pick up on either the yellow or green tone that each room exhibits. Toss those aside and sink your head into the down pillows as you lounge with a book in hand; a firmer variety of pillows is available if you prefer. The beds at The Sanctuary live up to the hotel's name and promise a good night's rest.

Unfortunately, the only room at The Sanctuary at Kiawah Island that has a fireplace is the exquisite Presidential Suite. But it seems that more people would rather soak up the South Carolina sun at the oceanfront hotel than be bundled up by a fire. If you do want to sit in front of a roaring fire and can't book the 3,100-square-foot Presidential Suite, head to the hotel's lobby and bar area. There are several cozy fireplaces in the elegant lobby sitting areas. There aren't many times during the year that the fireplace is actually needed, but the atmosphere it creates is utterly romantic.

You'll get unrivaled views no matter where you stay at The Sanctuary at Kiawah Island because all rooms come with a balcony or terrace. Whether you are looking over the garden or out onto the Atlantic, your balcony is a great place to sit and unwind after a long day on the golf course. The interior rooms overlook the large, gorgeous lawn that evokes an English garden, while some rooms give you a great view of the ocean. The outer rooms offer a glimpse of the beautiful tropical grounds surrounding the Five-Star hotel. Needless to say, regardless of where your room is, you will have a fabulous view that transports you even further away from the real world.

For the rooms with the best views at The Sanctuary at Kiawah Island, book a premium oceanfront suite on the interior corner with two balconies. These rooms offer the best of both worlds, a nearly endless view of the ocean in either direction from the hotel grounds and a balcony overlooking the large lawn reminiscent of an English garden. You'll even get a glimpse of the hotel pools. On the lawn, you will see people flying kites, picnicking, relaxing in lounge chairs or perhaps enjoying one of the many events the Five-Star hotel holds on the grassy area. These two balconies will make leaving your beautiful room difficult; stay in the relaxing space for room service meals, a cold drink from the mini-bar or just daydream.

One of the reasons people come to The Sanctuary at Kiawah Island is for the golf courses. This Five-Star hotel is part of the sprawling Kiawah Island Golf Resort, which offers five spectacular courses. Whether you are the next Tiger Woods or just looking to play a calming round of golf, any one of these courses is a great option. Turtle Point was designed by famed golfer Jack Nicklaus and flaunts some of the most striking fairways we've seen. Three of the holes on the renowned Turtle Point course hug the coastline, and a variety of tropical vegetation surrounds this wide-open course.
Adjacent to Turtle Point is the Tommy Cuthbert Golf Learning Center, which is the place to go if you need to brush up on your game. The center has a large number of driving range tee boxes and offers lessons for all ages and skill levels.

The Woodlands Inn extends it trademark Southern hospitality to pets, too. The South Carolina hotel allows dogs, and there’s no weight limit. Woodlands Inn’s dog butler takes care of arranging animal visits, finding out ahead of time how big they are and whether they have a tendency to bark — if they do, the staff will make sure you book a soundproofed room. All doggies receive a bone upon arrival, and the chef prepares a meal specifically for your four-legged companions. Since the Five-Star hotel provides dog beds, food bowls and grooming services, it makes bringing your furry friend along easy, as does the low $25 fee charged to pet owners.

Any items that you choose will be delivered to your room and replaced throughout your visit, but know that unlike your run-of-the-mill mini-bar, you’ll be charged when they’re brought to your room, not when you use them. Woodland Inn’s Five-Star standard doesn’t stop at the guest rooms and amenities, it also extends to its restaurants. The Dining Room at Woodlands Inn is a Forbes Travel Guide Five-Star as well. The elegant eatery serves breakfast, lunch and dinner in a sun-drenched space, complete with large windows and elegant crystal chandeliers. Breakfast and lunch are laid-back, providing dressed-up crowd-pleasers such as pecan pancakes and a lobster BLT. By night, the Dining Room delivers a true fine dining experience, offering new American tasting menus from chef Andrew Chadwick.
For more casual meals, you’ll find Pines Bar and Café just outside the Dining Room. The cozy space is open from 2:30to 9:30 p.m. It serves a changing menu with fare similar to the Dining Room’s lunch —choose from salads, pastas and composed dishes such as veal cheeks with red wine syrup. The small dining room has brick walls and banquette seating, while tasseled lamps hang above leather stools that line the curved bar.

Woodland Inn’s touch of British flair extends right into the shower, where you can lather up with Molton Brown bath products. The London-based company has remained a major player in the bath product business since its start in 1973, and it prides itself on using natural ingredients from sustainable sources. The Five-Star Charleston hotel provides soap, shampoo, conditioner and body lotion by the luxury brand, and we don’t blame you if you set aside some extra room in your dop kit for the free toiletries. Cotton swabs and cotton balls are also on conveniently on hand by the sink.
The bathrooms at this Five-Star hotel are traditional, with pedestal sinks and white decorative molding. Suite bathrooms have a bit more room to spread out, as well as bidets — there’s that British influence again — and separate soaking tubs and showers.

If you’re heading to South Carolina’s Low Country for a stay at the Five-Star Woodlands Inn, there are a few things you should know. Here are five tips to keep in mind:
1. The hotel is isolated. Woodlands Inn is a mile and a half outside the small town of Summerville, on thick-forested grounds — so you really feel like you’re getting away. We’d recommend renting a car for the trip if you’re interested in seeing any sights or leaving the hotel for meals.
2. It sports a traditional style. The Five-Star hotel feels like a step back into another time — one where formal sitting rooms and crystal chandeliers are the norm. Woodlands Inn’s elegant décor is graceful, but not stuffy. You’ll feel at ease in the converted mansion, which dates back to 1906.
3. The service is Five-Star. The staff members will call you by name at this intimate hotel and are always on hand to help out with any request. The staff is small, so you’ll get to know the employees during your stay — the sommelier might recommend pairings in the dining room for dinner and pour your drink in the bar later that night.
4. The hotel is closed Mondays during warmer months. The sticky summers are the off-season in Charleston, so from June through September the hotel is open Tuesday through Sunday and The Dining Room is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays.
5. Wi-Fi can be spotty. Only some of Woodlands Inn’s rooms have Wi-Fi, so make sure to ask for one if you need it. Otherwise, all rooms have an Ethernet connection conveniently located at the desk.

Once you hop off the plane, the 25-minute trip from Charleston International Airport to Woodlands Inn is easy to make by rental car. After a mile and a half, turn left onto Parsons Road when you see the Woodlands Inn sign. When you enter the grounds, follow the curving road through the thick woods and drive up to the front of the impressive columned mansion, where the valet will meet you.
If you’re planning a carless trip, arrange beforehand to have the Woodlands Inn house van pick you up from the airport for a $50 fee.

There’s a lot to love about Woodlands Inn, the historic getaway near Charleston, S.C. Here are the five things we love most at the Five-Star hotel:
1. Service, service, service. From the concierge to the sommelier, Woodlands Inn’s staff is gracious and über-helpful, which comes in handy because the hotel’s small size means you really get to know those friendly faces.
2. Teatime. You can take your complimentary afternoon tea on the porch, in your room or wherever you please in the elegant mansion. The sophisticated silver tea service comes complete with dainty snacks such as petit fours and breads.
3. The grounds. Woodlands Inn sits on 42 acres of pines and flowering gardens. The thick woodlands make the property feel very private, perfect for a soothing respite away from the hustle and bustle of daily life. Take advantage of the outdoors by exploring the walking trails, especially if you’ve brought along a pet.
4. It’s a true getaway. The secluded inn is an ideal place to take it easy. It’s up to you whether you want to spend a day relaxing in the rocking chairs on the porch of the mansion, playing a game of croquet on the lawn or doing absolutely nothing at all.
5. The house bikes. The luxury hotel keeps shiny green cruisers on hand for ambling rides through charming Summerville. The concierge can suggest routes, or you can take off on your own to tour the blooming azaleas. And the best part? There’s no charge for your joy ride.

The Sanctuary at Kiawah Island serves Sunday brunch at the popular Jasmine Porch. The restaurant resembles an elegant sunroom with high ceilings and huge curtains hanging between tables for a sophisticated yet inviting atmosphere to start your day.
The menus packed with choices, but we suggest you go for the Low Country breakfast buffet. With continental breakfast staples like fruit and pastries along with Southern specialties like Low Country shrimp and grits, and vanilla bourbon French toast, it's hard to go wrong with this buffet. The brunch menu changes weekly to offer a new, fresh and, of course, local seafood display, house-made charcuterie and seasonal entrée favorites. Champagne is included along with an abundance of desserts made by the Five-Star hotel's own pastry chef.
The restaurant steps up the meal by adding the musical stylings of the Williams Duoa father-son pair that combines acoustic guitar and violin to play a variety of jazz standards and unique renditions of classic tunes. The Sanctuary at Kiawah Island offers three venues for your dream wedding, and all have sweeping views of the Atlantic Ocean and the hotel's private beach. For a more proper ceremony, try the Grand Lawn. It sits behind the hotel, bordered by the U-shaped building on three sides, and can be seen from the interior balconies. The lawn is meticulously kept, resembling a perfect putting green, and was designed to look like an English garden. The Terrace Courtyard on the other side of the hotel offers a slightly more casual and private venue, but it also has ocean views.
