What kind of art can you see at CityCenter?

Travel Guide Inspector

Entering the enormous CityCenter — which takes up 76 acres on the Las Vegas Strip — is like walking into an art museum. Fine art is found everywhere, from the complex’s hotels to its shopping district — and you won’t have to pay admission. If this concept sounds new, that’s because it is. It marks the first major public and permanent art collection in Las Vegas. You’ll find large-scale installations, sculptures and much more by 15 world-class artists, such as Jenny Holzer, Claes Oldenburg and Coosje van Bruggen, Frank Stella, Henry Moore and Richard Long. Check out the 120-foot reclaimed silver sculpture that hangs behind the reception desk at ARIA Resort & Casino. The piece, by Maya Linn, mimics the Colorado River, but it also nods to Nevada’s history as the Silver State. Be sure to head outdoors to see some more art, most notably one of Nancy Rubins’s well-known boat installations: A 40-foot-tall cluster of rowboats, kayaks and canoes floats outside of Vdara Hotel & Spa. The shipwrecked watercraft look appropriate in the middle of the desert. Wander throughout CityCenter for your own art tour.

What can I do at CityCenter?

With three hotels, a world-class shopping mall and a massive collection of public art, there’s plenty to do at CityCenter.

Take in the spas. Vdara Hotel and Spa, ARIA Resort & Casino and Mandarin Oriental, Las Vegas, all have jaw-dropping spas. Vdara and ARIA’s spas are natural and modern oases, while Mandarin Oriental’s Five-Star sanctuary has a distinct Asian minimalism and sophistication.

Tour the art. CityCenter has a massive collection of public art — stop by ARIA’s concierge for a map of the major pieces. Don’t miss works by Henry Moore and Claes Oldenburg in the public spaces, and head to the gallery in the Crystals shopping district to marvel at the works of world-famous glass master Dave Chihuly.

    • See a show. Cirque du Soleil’s rock 'n' rolling Zarkana, opening at ARIA Resort & Casino on November 1 following a New York run, is an energetic and acrobatic rock opera. Splurge on tickets in the theater's Golden Circle or Banquette sections for sofa-style seating.

    • Do some fine dining. From farm-to-table American cuisine at Sage to modern French at Twist by Pierre Gagnaire, CityCenter has dozens of restaurants to choose from. Make a reservation for dinner at Bar Masa or Michael Mina’s and then wander CityCenter to take in the artwork.

Shop. No run-of-the-mill mall, CityCenter’s Crystals boasts styles straight from the runways. Check out boutiques from designers such as Balenciaga, Christian Dior and Marni — the innovative storefronts and high-tech displays make window-shopping worthwhile, too.

    What hotels make up CityCenter?

Three very different hotels make up CityCenter — ARIA Resort & Casino, Vdara Hotel and Spa and Mandarin Oriental, Las Vegas. The largest option is ARIA, a giant hotel with 4,004 rooms, a large casino and 16 restaurants to choose from. ARIA is also home to fine dining from chefs like Jean Georges Vongerichten, Masa Takayama and Michael Mina. Next door, Vdara is a quieter younger sister to ARIA, and it stands out on the Strip for being smoke-free, non-gaming and all suites. Existing as a getaway while still being close enough to the action to indulge, Vdara boasts a salon, spa and a pool and lounge. You won’t find a casino at Mandarin Oriental, Las Vegas either, and the chic hotel feels almost anti-Vegas, bringing sophistication and stellar service to CityCenter. With a Five-Star spa and the acclaimed Twist by Pierre Gagnaire, you won’t miss the slot machines at Mandarin Oriental, Las Vegas, but if you do, it’s a quick walk to ARIA.

What has CityCenter done to be LEED certified?

To reduce the amount of fossil-fuel based power, many measures were taken during the design of CityCenter to achieve a more than 30 percent improvement in energy efficiency compared to traditionally designed buildings.

From plumbing design to investment in low-flow technologies to conscientious operating procedures, the CityCenter team incorporated water conservation practices throughout the campus.

All CityCenter attractions are within walking distance. Many services and amenities are located either on the CityCenter campus or within a half-mile radius, reducing guests’ and residents’ dependence on automobiles.

Committed to reducing its environmental footprint, CityCenter developed a strict construction waste management plan to redirect recyclable and reusable resources back to the manufacturing process. This program extends through to daily operations.

When selecting materials for CityCenter, designers used products manufactured with recycled content. They also sought local and regional products to minimize the emission of greenhouse gases caused when materials are transported.

Guest and employee comfort is paramount to the CityCenter experience. An indoor air quality plan was implemented and nontoxic products were selected to ensure a healthier environment.

    What is Veer Towers?

Designed by Helmut Jahn, Veer Towers is a pair of arresting residential icons in the hub of CityCenter. With approximately 335 residences each in two 37-story glass towers, Veer soars above the city and seems to dance with a rhythm all its own. Veer showcases “European-style” residences as personal, private havens featuring modern kitchens, living and dining areas, spacious and spa-styled bathrooms and floor-to-ceiling windows.

What is CityCenter’s architectural style like?

CityCenter was developed by an incomparable group of architects who came together with the energy, foresight, talent and vision in a project that was the first of its kind.

ARIA Resort & Casino was shaped by Pelli Clarke Pelli Architects; Helmut Jahn led the effort on Veer Towers; RV Architecture, LLC, led by Rafael Vinoly, oversaw Vdara; Kohn Pedersen Fox led the way for Mandarin Oriental, Las Vegas; Studio Daniel Libeskind crafted Crystals shopping pavilion with interiors by David Rockwell and his Rockwell Group. MGM Resorts International retained Gensler, the largest architectural firm in the world, to oversee the projects of seven architects, three architects of record, 90 interior designers and hundreds of consultants.

Each incredible steel-and-glass architectural structure complements the others and combined they create a truly mesmerizing showcase of modern design.
