When you make the drive from Pittsburgh, Philadelphia or Washington DC, Falling Rock might feel like it’s in the middle of nowhere, but there is plenty to do near the boutique hotel. We recommend you check these five off your to-do list:
1. Tour Frank Lloyd Wright’s Fallingwater. The house built over a waterfall is the master architect’s most famous work, and is located just 20 minutes from the resort. Take a tour and marvel at the organic architecture.
2. Visit Ohiopyle State Park. The 20,500-acre park is just a 15-minute drive from Falling Rock. You can visit waterfalls, hike or whitewater raft down the Youghiogheny River, or even take a ride down two natural waterslides.
3. Play a round at Mystic Rock. If you’re a golfer, playing this Pete Dye-designed course is a must. Even if you’re a beginner, Nemacolin offers lessons designed to get you out on the green.
4. Go dog sledding, in the summer or the winter. It seems like there are countless things to do on Nemacolin Woodlands Resort’s grounds, but one of the most unique is riding behind a team of sled dogs. The 30-minute rides are best over snow, but they’re now offered year-round.
5. Go underground at Laurel Caverns. Laurel Caverns is the largest cave in Pennsylvania and provides plenty of opportunity for spelunking. Tours are available for families with kids as well as more hardcore explorers — the cave goes down 46 stories.

Falling Rock is only open in the warmer months, so visitors have to take advantage of the Five-Star hotel’s short season. Open from April through October, the summer months are the busiest time at Falling Rock, especially since that’s high golf season at the par 72 Mystic Rock course surrounding the hotel. Summer is great for golf and also enjoying Nemacolin Woodlands Resorts’ many outdoor activities, but we recommend visiting during Pennsylvania’s beautiful fall season. Vibrant foliage pops all over the wooded property, and you can take advantage of the fall festival that includes a craft fair, craft brewed beer and live music. If you just can’t wait until spring to visit Falling Rock, the hotel is available for private buyouts.

The locker rooms at they gym at Falling Rock consist of two separate men’s and women’s locker rooms, both located near the Mystic Rock Pro Shop, business center and fitness room. Falling Rock’s Locker Rooms boast private shower and toilet areas, individual lockers and all of the bath amenities guests find in their guest rooms. Though both were designed with the same Prairie School integrity as the rest of the hotel, each has its own personality. The Women’s Locker Room is a peaceful sanctuary with a quiet seating area, board games, reading material and television. Adjacent to this seating area is a private outdoor mediation garden, complete with a soothing water feature. The Men’s Locker Room is a true ‘man den’ complete with a dining area, oversized flat screen TV, and pool table, as well as board and arcade games. It offers its own balcony area and stairs leading directly to the Mystic Rock starting area. But, the Men’s Locker Room is not just for the men. In the evenings, once golf rounds have ended, this locker room opens into a co-ed lounge where butlers and bar tenders can deliver food and beverage service.

The sprawling grounds around Falling Rock are an excellent place to jog. Feel free to explore the grounds by making up your own path, or the front desk can provide a map with three routes you can take. The provided routes start at Nemacolin Woodlands Resort’s Adventure Center, so call a shuttle to take you there or extend your run by jogging over. If it’s a trail run you’re in the mood for, the 1.7-mile yellow loop is the shortest run and takes you through the forest and grassy fields around Falling Rock. The orange loop is a bit longer at 3.6 miles, and acts as a tour of the property, passing golf courses, zoo animals and a piece of the Berlin Wall. The last loop is the longest — four miles — and is all on paved road. As you jog, make sure you notice the vintage airplane hanger and garage of classic cars.

Falling Rock’s small gym is a good place to fit in a quick workout. Located on the first floor of the Five-Star boutique hotel, the gym is open 24 hours and has the basic equipment you’ll need. The two treadmills, one elliptical, and one exercise bike all have their own screens, and a Cybex weight machine has stations to work out your legs and arms. The room — with a TV in the corner and floor to ceiling windows — is also stocked with small free weights, an exercise ball and aerobic steps. Chilled water and towels are on hand, as are wipes for sterilizing the equipment between uses. After your workout, you can step outside to the small stone courtyard, or hit the impressive locker rooms. They serve golfers from the Mystic Rock course too, so they’re bigger and more luxurious than the gym. The men’s locker room is especially nice — it has a pool table, balcony and dining area. If you’re looking for more equipment, take one of the property shuttles to the larger gym in the Woodlands Spa. That gym also offers personal training and complimentary fitness classes.

Falling Rock’s cozy lobby is home to Amber Lounge, the Five-Star hotel’s bar. Amber Lounge is located just outside Aqueous restaurant and serves a menu of snacks, from charcuterie to cheese plates, shrimp cocktail to a dip of the day. Order from the bar’s list of cocktails, including drinks like the pomegranate mojito with vanilla liqueur, Bacardi and mint, or the Falling Rock margarita made of Patron, Cointreau, Grand Marnier and lemon and lime juice. You can also order from Aqueous’ wine by the glass list, a constantly changing selection of white and red wines, mostly from California. Don’t want to drink? You can order up two non-alcoholic mocktails, the sundowner, a mix of blood orange juice, sparkling water and simple syrup or the peach cider, peach nectar with sparkling cider.

For classic breakfast, lunch by the pool or elegant dinners, Falling Rock has two restaurants to choose from. Just off the hotel lobby, Aqueous is open for breakfast and dinner. The sophisticated restaurant has floor-to-ceiling windows with views of the golf course, and serves breakfast dishes that should please everyone in your group. Interesting options include potato pierogies with caramelized onions and crème fraiche and aged cheddar grits with chorizo. Kids can choose from pancakes and other crowd-pleasers on the children’s menu. At night, the restaurant transforms into an upscale steakhouse serving steaks and decadent sides — think mac and cheese and asiago risotto — as well as a few seafood and vegetarian options. For alfresco dining at lunch and dinner, Sunset Terrace is open by the gorgeous infinity pool. The restaurant serves a Pan-Asian menu including sushi rolls and a range of composed dishes like chilled noodle salad with lemon soy vinaigrette and fish tacos with yuzu. For lunch, there’s also a grab-and-go golfers menu with American fare from sandwiches to burgers. If you feel like leaving the hotel, but not the property, make sure to make a reservation for dinner at Lautrec, the Five-Star restaurant in Chateau Lafayette, in the center of Nemacolin Woodlands Resort.

A plush, pillow-top Sterns and Foster mattress is the foundation for the luxurious beds, which are dressed with 1,200 threadcount Resuinsa sheets with a green embroidered stripe and Falling Rock monogram. Chenille bedding goes on top, as do six fluffy goose down pillows. You can also customize your bed with choices from the pillow menu. Choose from the 10 pillow types, from buckwheat hull pillows to water pillows that will make your sleep just a little more restful. A soft upholstered headboard makes the bed look sharp, but provides a comfortable back rest as you read or watch the 32-inch flat screen TV.

Falling Rock’s rooms are cozy and comfortable, and they’re the perfect retreat after a day of activities at Nemacolin Woodlands Resort. Muted hues of brown, green and maroon match the hotel’s décor and give the rooms a serene feeling, while organic materials like cherry wood bring the resort’s grounds indoors. Natural light streams in through large windows; some rooms have balconies for taking in views of Mystic Rock golf course and the woodlands surrounding it. Beds with padded, tufted headboards add to the softness of the space, and provide a good place to watch the 32-inch flat screen TV, housed in a wood armoire. A floor lamp with a tree motif and angular furniture remind us of the hotel’s modern lodge vibe. In the bathrooms, toffee-colored granite pairs with dark wood cabinetry, and double square sinks are finished with shiny brass fixtures. Modern sconces of stacked rectangular prisms add interest to the large mirror. A white soaking tub is grounded in marble tile. Save time for a long soak in the separate shower — it has four heads that you can customize for an invigorating experience.

There are only 42 guestrooms at the Five-Star Falling Rock hotel, located on the grounds of the sprawling Nemacolin Woodlands Resort. The boutique hotel’s small size means the public spaces are not crowded — good for nabbing a lounge chair at the pool — and you also receive great service. Staff members greet you by name at Falling Rock and anticipate your needs before you do. Falling Rock’s four suites are spacious rooms with fireplaces and large decks with tables for private dining. The biggest suite has two queen beds and a half bath. The guestrooms are very similar to the suites, with the same warm décor and level of luxury.

Turndown is a highlight of the Five-Star service at Falling Rock. In addition to getting the room ready for the night, butlers also delivers milk and warm chocolate chip cookies to your room. The room is tided, with every detail considered — clothing is neatly folded and toiletries are laid on a cloth on the vanity. Slippers are placed by the side of the bed and a bottle of water, small plate of chocolates and flickering battery-powered candle are placed on the nightstand. The decorative covers on the bed are removed, revealing the white sheets with an embroidered green stripe and Falling Rock logo. The pillows on the bed are perfectly fluffed, and any additional pillows you order from the pillow menu — buckwheat or memory foam, maybe? — are waiting for you. The white microfiber robe is hung in the bathroom, ready for you when you step out of your bath, which you can choose from the bath menu. Your choice of bath salts perfume the water, while bubbles, candles and scattered rose petals turn the bathroom into a spa. Turndown is delivered in every room from 6 p.m. to 9:30 p.m., but let your butler know if you want your cookies or bath at a specific time.

Falling Rock, a Five-Star hotel situated on the grounds of Nemacolin Woodlands Resort, is a love letter to Frank Lloyd Wright. The Pennsylvania hotel wasn’t designed by the master architect, but it represents an interpretation of his ideas in hotel form. Architect David Merritt designed the building, which opened in 2004, as well as most everything that’s inside it, from the furniture to the light fixtures. The façade of the hotel is made up of a series of triangles — these ensure that each of the 42 guest rooms gets a corner window. The stone on the exterior sets the tone for the natural materials and warm color palette that are found throughout the hotel. As you walk inside, you’ll feel like you’ve entered an upscale lodge. The atrium lobby gives the spacious room an airy feel, and lounge-like seating in earthy tones gives you a sense of the casual comfort found everywhere at Falling Rock. The guest rooms feel incredibly cozy — you’ll want to head straight for the soft chenille-covered bed with its padded headboard. Brown, maroon and tan tones keep the room neutral, and wood nightstands and armoire has lots of hard angles. In the bathroom, handsome dark wood cabinets are matched with beige marble tiles and granite counters. Polished brass fixtures contrast with rough textures like the oversize faux-fossils hanging over the white soaking tub. Frank Lloyd Wright’s use of geometric designs is mimicked in throughout the property — triangles appear everywhere from inside the elevator to the place settings at Aqueous restaurant. The lobby steakhouse is a sophisticated space with views of the golf course that you can take in from Wright’s iconic barrel chairs. Once you’ve see Nemacolin’s version of Wright’s principles, remember that you can take a tour of nearby Falling Water, Frank Lloyd Wright’s masterpiece and the namesake for the hotel.

Falling Rock's triangular infinity pool looks out at the manicured Mystic Rock golf course and surrounding forest. Lined with wooden loungers, the terra cotta-colored deck is a tranquil place to relax. Butler service is available poolside, and handsome wooden cabanas are available for rent. The pool is only accessible to Falling Rock guests — there's a bigger pool outfitted with a waterslide at the center of the resort that you can use too — so it never gets too crowded. The pool deck is also home to Sunset Terrace, a poolside restaurant serving Pan Asian cuisine. Have a sushi roll or an order of fish tacos with yuzu vinaigrette without even going inside.

If you’re headed to Southwestern Pennsylvania for a stay at the Five-Star Falling Rock, we have a few tips for you. Here are five things we think you should know:
1. After the last round is played at Mystic Rock golf course, the men’s locker room goes co-ed. No ordinary locker room, Falling Rock’s is a fully loaded hangout, with a pool table, arcade games, dining area and own balcony. Order up a drink or snack and take a look around.
2. The property is sprawling. While Falling Rock is a small hotel, the resort it sits on is huge. Nemacolin Woodlands Resort covers 2,000 acres, and some of the best amenities — like Woodlands Spa and the Five-Star Lautrec restaurant — are about a mile and a half from Falling Rock. It’s easy to get around, though — a fleet of complimentary shuttles can pick you up and drop you off anywhere on the property.
3. The hotel is closed in the winter. Don’t plan on spending a winter getaway at Falling Rock — it’s closed from November to March. You can still visit Nemacolin though, Four-Star Chateau Lafayette, near the center of the resort is open; it’s popular spot to spend the holidays.
4. Pets have their own playground. Falling Rock doesn’t allow pets to stay in the hotel, but Nemacolin has a boarding facility — Nemacolin Woodlands Resort — where four-legged friends can stay. Pets are allowed on the Nemacolin’s resort grounds, which are a good place for a long walk.
5. Think twice before bringing the family. Falling Rock tells potential guests that the hotel is best for adults, but kids aren’t banned. The upscale hotel is small and quiet, but we don’t see why well-behaved children couldn’t fit in — the downstairs Aqueous restaurant is especially kid-friendly. Nemacolin Woodlands Resort is a great destination for kids, so if you’re worried about bringing the kids, you can always stay at Chateau Lafayette, the larger Four-Star hotel at the center of the resort.

Many of Nemacolin Woodlands Resort’s long list of activities also come with fees, including all the action at the Adventure Center. The property’s Adventure Pass costs $15 and allows you access to the climbing wall, miniature golf and disc golf, as well as discounts for off road driving, fly fishing, bowling and more.

With so much to see and do at Nemacolin Woodlands Resort and its Five-Star hotel Falling Rock, you won’t want to cancel once you’ve decided on a visit. But if you do have to reschedule or forego your trip to Pennsylvania’s Five-Star Falling Rock, make sure to give two weeks notice. If not, you’ll lose your deposit — the cost of the first night’s room and tax. The hotel also charges a $25 fee for every cancelled reservation, no matter when you call.

Five-Star Falling Rock in Southwestern Pennsylvania is truly unique — with one-of-a-kind amenities and a level of service you won’t find anywhere else. We like a lot about the hotel, but here is a list of the five things we love most:
1. You’ll never be bored. Nemacolin Woodlands Resort is a sprawling resort jam-packed with things to do. It’s a family vacation wonderland — but adults will also be interested in the eclectic collection of activities and sights on the property — a piece of the Berlin wall is displayed, for instance.
2. The bath menu is to die for. Choose your bath salts from fragrances like rosemary and mint, let your butler know what time you’d like it, and return to your room from dinner to a honeymoon-worthy display. The 210-gallon tub is filled with bubbles, candles surround the tub and rose petals are strewn on top. There’s also a kids bath option, with bubbles and, of course, rubber duckies.
3. Milk and cookies — need we say anything more? Nightly turndown comes with milk and cookies delivered to your room. The cookies are chocolate chip — soft in the middle and crispy on the outside — and the milk is placed in your mini-bar until you’re ready.
4. The pool is gorgeous. Falling Rock’s triangular infinity pool has great views — don’t miss the chance to look out over the Mystic Rock golf course and surrounding woodlands from the deep end or a lounge chair.
5. The butler service takes it over the top. The already luxurious property and friendly staff confirm that Falling Rock is a great place to stay, but the butlers make it really special. Each guest meets their butler at check-in and can call on him or her for anything they need — the friendly butler staff will unpack for you, press clothing and bring you coffee in bed, or if you prefer, they’ll completely leave you alone.

Renting a car is the best way to get to Falling Rock if you’re flying into the Pittsburgh airport, which is located about 70 miles away from the Five-Star hotel. The drive takes you along scenic Route 40 through the rolling woodlands of Pennsylvania’s Laurel Highlands, and it can take a couple hours, so give yourself plenty of time if you’re trying to make a tee time or dinner reservations. From the airport, take I-376 East to I-79 South. From there, merge onto I-70 East toward Washington, Pennsylvania. At the California exit, merge onto Route 43 South, which you’ll follow to Route 40 East. Route 40 takes you the rest of the way to Farmington, where you’ll turn left at Nemacolin Woodlands Resort’s entrance. You’ll be on a Route 43, a toll road, so have cash on hand for the automated booths. If you’d prefer to have someone else do the driving, the transportation department at Nemacolin Woodlands Resort can arrange for a car to pick you up for a fee. If even that sounds like a hassle, skip the airport altogether and land your private jet in the property’s airfield.

Falling Rock’s remote location and attentive butler service set it apart from other Forbes Travel Guide Five-Star hotels. Located in the Laurel Highlands region of Pennsylvania’s Allegheny Mountains, about 70 miles from Pittsburgh, Falling Rock is the most upscale hotel at Nemacolin Woodlands Resort. The sprawling resort is one of a kind: a vacation playground offering activities and sights created at the whim of the family owners. In addition to the two elite golf courses, the resort offers guests the chance to take part in activities from visiting the zoo animals that are kept on property to taking aim at the shooting academy and even dog sledding — in summer or winter. With such busy days, Falling Rock’s butlers come in handy — they’ll take care of tasks from making dinner reservations before your visit to serving coffee and opening your room’s curtains in the morning. Each guest at Falling Rock is introduced to their butler at check-in, and has access to his or her services 24 hours a day.

1. The stunning architecture - inspired by the design of “America’s Most Famous” Architect, Frank Lloyd Wright, Falling Rock opened in August 2004 and was designed by architect David Merritt. Incorporating Wright’s legendary style of organic architecture through design, structural elements and furnishings, Falling Rock seamlessly blends into the surrounding nature, creating a sense of warmth and charm. Wright believed in geometric shapes; therefore, throughout the property you will notice the use of the triangle shape.
A shape that designer, Merritt, used to signify the “rock.” All features throughout the hotel were designed for the hotel from the lighting fixtures down to the amenity boxes in each guest room.
2. The unparalleled Butler Service - Falling Rock guests receive 24-hour complimentary Butler Services. These professionally trained butlers provide incomparable attention to guest needs. A sampling of their services may include: check-in and check-out details, unpacking and packing of luggage, traditional English wake-up services consisting of complimentary breakfast beverages, drawing of the curtains, weather report and review of your personal itinerary, 24-hour in-room dining service, milk and cookie turn-down, ironing and steaming of garments, shoe shining, golf spike detailing, and arranging of airport transfers.
3. Aqueous Restaurant - Driven by the Frank Lloyd Wright-inspired architecture that permeates Falling Rock, Aqueous imparts the aspects that set Wright apart from his peers into a special dining experience, while enjoying a panoramic view of the Mystic Rock Golf Course and surrounding Laurel Highlands. The cuisine at Aqueous takes the upscale steakhouse concept to an entirely new level. The menu features American cuisine using the finest selection of ingredients found in the United States, with a strong focus on small regional farms. Unlike traditional steakhouses that offer diners a selection in the cut of meat, Aqueous offers guests the opportunity to fine-tune what they ideally consider "the best cut" by selecting aging styles. The attire is resort casual.
4. The Incredible Views - Falling Rock overlooks the 18th hole on the PGA-tour tested Mystic Rock Golf Course. Find a lounge chair poolside or rent one of our six private cabanas that overlook the infinity pool with its’ crystal blue water and vanishing edges that run seamless into the breathtaking views of Pennsylvania’s Laurel Highlands, or simply relax on your suite balcony and let your butler take care of everything else.
5. Mystic Rock Locker - World-class. -
Here are five things you should know about Falling Rock:
1. Falling Rock evolved from the desire of Joseph A. Hardy, Founder of Nemacolin Woodlands Resort, to have a resort clubhouse to support the professional golfers that would be staying on property during the PGA tour’s 84 Lumber Classic. In fact, it was in January of 2003 that Hardy was first quoted to saying “We ought to have a clubhouse.” By August of 2004, Falling Rock was open. The initial plan of a 15,000 square-foot clubhouse quickly progressed into the reality of a 92,000 square-foot world-class boutique hotel. Many accredit Hardy’s ambition and tenacity for accomplishing such a feat.
2. Falling Rock was inspired by the works and concepts of Frank Lloyd Wright. The hotel was designed in 2003 by architect, David Merritt, who studied Wright’s architecture at Taleisin West in Arizona. The Pennsylvania Laurel Highlands have long been an architectural travel destination as the area features numerous architectural works, including the world-famous Fallingwater by the legendary Frank Lloyd Wright. Just twenty minutes from Falling Rock, Fallingwater was built for the Kauffman family of Pittsburgh in 1936. In 1953, Wright commissioned the Hagan home, known as Kentuck Knob just a few miles away.
3. Falling Rock offers 24-hour Butler Services which include drawing a bath for guests in our 210 gallon soaking tub to arranging private on-property transportation.
4. Falling Rock boutique hotel doubles as the Mystic Rock Golf Course Clubhouse and sits overlooking the 18th green of the course. The former site of the PGA Tour 84 Lumber Classic from 2003-2006.
5. While no guest is ever turned away at Falling Rock, the exclusive, secluded and luxurious experience that Falling Rock provides is best suited for couples and adults. If you choose to bring your children, be sure to ask your butler to draw them a special children’s bath, complete with rubber ducky and bubbles. -
Falling Rock is only open in the warmer months, so visitors have to take advantage of the Five-Star hotel’s short season.

36-holes of championship golf, a world-class spa, sporting clays at the Field Club, an Adventure Center featuring year-round recreation, safari tours and pony rides at our Wildlife Academy are at your fingertips all right here at Nemacolin Woodlands Resort. But, if adventure finds you leaving Nemacolin’s 2,000 acre playground, we would suggest spending your time at some of Pennsylvania’s local attractions, each just a quick drive from our resort entrance. For your convenience, private transportation or directions can be prepared for adventure.
Fallingwater and Kentuck Knob, two 20th Century architectural masterpieces both by America’s most famous architect, Frank Lloyd Wright, are located within 20 minutes of Nemacolin Woodlands Resort and just 10 minutes from one another. Guided tours are available throughout the year.
Ohiopyle State Park, encompassing 19,052 acres of rugged, natural beauty, the park is your gateway to some of the best river rafting, kayaking, hiking and biking in the Eastern U.S. The focal points of the park are the 14 miles of the Youghiogheny River that pass through the heart of the park, its numerous waterfalls including the main falls just steps from the main visitor parking area, its natural waterslides, and its miles of trails leading to awe-inspiring overlooks.
The Christian W. Klay Winery is one of Pennsylvania’s premiere wineries. Located in Chalk Hill, just minutes from Nemacolin on the historic National Road, the winery offers tours, entertaining special events and complimentary tastings of their award-winning vintages.

Falling Rock's Sunset Terrace features an infinity pool in the shape of a triangle with a vanishing edge that overlooks the 18th hole of the PGA-Tour tested Mystic Rock golf course. Architect David Merritt, designed the pool location specifically so that guests can lounge poolside while taking in the beautiful mountain surroundings and experience a spectacular Pennsylvania sunset. Though the infinity pool is reserved for Falling Rock guests only, Falling Rock guests may also enjoy the resort's additional pool locations.

2. Be sure to try one of our made-to-order, dry aged steaks from Aqueous. 3. Get whisked away by the Tasting Menu with Wine Pairings at Lautrec, featuring European style cuisine made from the finest ingredients found locally and internationally. The Lautrec menu is a prix-fixe format in which guests can create their own five-course menu or dine from the nine-course Chef’s Tasting menu. Our Beef Menu features a 24 oz. Porterhouse, 18 oz. Bone-In-Ribeye, 28 day aged New York Strip and a Prime Filet, all of which are served with sauce and available “Au Poivre” upon request.

The cocktails at Nemacolin Woodlands Resort are innovative, fresh and reflective of seasonally available ingredients. May we suggest the Jalapeño Pineapple Mojito available at Falling Rock’s Amber Bar.

The Nemacolin Woodlands Wine Cellar is the finest wine cellar in the region and one of the most extensive in the country. The strengths of the Woodlands Wine Cellar are numerous, but of particular note are it’s over fifty vintages of first growth Bordeaux from the Médoc & Graves, a comparable collection of Champagne and Port and multiple vintages of the finest wines from Burgundy, Italy and the Napa Valley. Cuisine-specific selections housed in each of our primary restaurants supplement the 21,000 bottle Woodlands Wine Cellar and elevate the resort’s total bottle count to approximately 25,000. The oldest selection in the Woodlands Wine Cellar, 1845 Madeira, contains wine that pre-dates the Civil War. The most expensive bottle housed in the cellar is 1947 Cheval Blanc, one that many experts deem to be among of the most profound wines of the 20th century.
