  • The service at Gramercy Tavern in New York is in a class all its own. Upon arrival, we were properly greeted and kept informed on the status of our reservation and notified exactly when our table would be ready. Once seated, our waitress was not only patient, but also impressively knowledgeable. She was happy to suggest wine pairings for the courses we selected from the three-course prix fixe menu, and when we were indecisive about what to order, she gave spot-on recommendations that helped us make the right choice. She was conversational, too — and genuinely interested in making sure that our dining experience was what we wanted it to be. She checked in after each course was delivered, but didn’t pester us while we dined. Despite managing a number of tables, and maintaining the pace of our meal, she still made us feel like we could sit there all night, rare for a restaurant with reservations booked solid.
  • At Gramercy Tavern, everything on the menu is in a class by itself. If you are eating in the main dining room, prepare your palette for a delectable three-course prix fixe meal with a range of options to choose from. While there are plenty of dishes our waitress was eager to recommend, she couldn’t help but rave about Executive chef Michael Anthony’s impressive commitment to the use of local produce in determining the dishes he puts on the menu. More advice from our waitress — when ordering at Gramercy Tavern, you can never go wrong with any of the fish or lamb options on the menu.

For appetizers on the three-course prix fixe menu, she recommended the smoked trout served with cippollini puree and pickled onions or the chilled asparagus soup served with turnips and lemon confit. For entrées, we recommend the rack and shoulder of lamb served with Hen of the Woods mushrooms, sunchokes, hazelnuts and collard greens, an inventive and filling choice with local ingredients. The smoked Arctic char is another dish to try, as is the halibut served with broccoli, beans, leeks and oysters. No matter how much you study the menu in advance of your visit, be forewarned—the daily specials at the New York restaurant are always worth a look.
