Just like everything else at the exclusive, uber-luxurious Twin Farms resort, its Out of the Woods Spa is a sybaritic retreat that’s made even more special by its exclusivity. If you’re planning to book a treatment, here are our picks for the five best amenities to keep an eye out for:
1. The all-natural spa products. Sourced exclusively from English beauty brand Arcania Apothecary, Out of the Woods Spa is the only spa outside the U.K. to feature these heavenly-scented, botanically-based products.
2. The Japanese Furo. Located in its own petite structure near the spa, this Japanese-style bath is a serene spot for a soak before or after a treatment. There are separate men’s and women’s sides, or a unisex area where you can take a dip in waters heated to 104 degrees. Since the property is so private and casual, you can slip from the spa to the furo and back to your room in your bathrobe without worrying about a dress code.
3. The fitness center. Plan a workout for before or after your spa service in the fully-stocked gym, located adjacent to the spa. Since there are only 20 rooms and cottages at Twin Farms, and most guests spend their time hidden away in the privacy of their own rooms, chances are you’ll have it to yourself.
4. Personalized spa snacks. This resort is designed to cater to whatever you want, whenever you want it. So if you like to follow-up your spa treatments with a cup of herbal tea and some fresh fruit, just ask the friendly staff. They’ll be happy to find the perfect indulgence to complete your experience.
5. Peace and quiet. With just two treatment rooms, Out of the Woods Spa is a relaxing, intimate space where you won’t have to fight for space in the locker room or to drown out other guest’s conversations when you’re trying to bliss out.

While the spa menu at Out of the Woods spa doesn’t change often with the newest fad or fashion, it’s worth knowing that throughout the year you can take advantage of the seasonal exclusives that are designed to reflect the time of year of each visit. If you happen to be visiting during the winter, try the Soul Soother treatment, a 90-minute full body treatment which incorporates a body brush, Dead Sea salt scrub, warm Honey and Mango body mask and full body massage. During summer, you could enjoy a Scrumptious Summer facial, which might include strawberries and cream, peach, honey or marigold.

Out of the Woods spa only has one salon room, which is spacious enough for one person to have their nails manicured comfortably, but too small for side-by-side nail treatments. You can treat yourself to a solo 60-minute manicure or pedicure, which includes not only buffing and polishing, but massage, botanical soaks, masks and aromatherapy using sandalwood, lavender, myrrh, lemongrass, lime and rose geranium essential oils. If you want someone to chat with while you relax, you're better off booking an in-room massage-the spa therapists will come to your room and perform side-by-side massages in front of your room’s fireplace.

Like all of the treatments at Out of the Woods spa, the massages are custom-designed using all-natural products from Arcania Apothecary in London. They incorporate great-smelling botanicals, adding a nice element of aromatherapy for further relaxation. The spa offers 60 or 90-minute massages for in-room appointments, or you can head down to the spa for a wider variety of options. Many treatments blend massage with other services such as scrubs and masks for a more unique experience-which means you won’t have to choose between which to do. One such comprehensive treatment is Back in Action, which, as the name suggests, focuses on the back with a scrub, mask and massage. Frankincense, rose and palmarosa essential oils help you relax and regulate excess oil without any harsh chemicals or artificial ingredients.

Each treatment offered at the Out of the Woods spa at Twin Farms resort is unique in its composition and application of creams, lotions and potions. However, for something truly unique that you’re unlikely to find elsewhere, splurge with the spa’s signature UBT, or Ultimate Body Treatment. Beginning with a complete body brush followed by an application of Dead Sea salts, you will be thoroughly buffed and polished before hopping into a hydrotherapy tub. While relaxing in the warm water, your body will be gently massaged by the hydro jets while your therapist provides a gentleneck, shoulders, arm and leg massage. Next is a seaweed body wrap; while you let the mud take effect, your face and scalp are massaged into a complete state of relaxation using the delicious Comfort Rescue Cream, a blend of bergamont, lavender and evening primrose. After washing off the excess mud in another quick rain-shower, your treatment will end with a complete body massage using the exclusive body contour cream

Though Out of the Woods Spa at Twin Farms resort is tiny, with only two treatment rooms, it does have a small room dedicated to salon treatments. To pretty up your palms, go for a Rejuvenating Manicure, or beautify your feet with The Foot Spa pedicure. Both are 60 minutes in length and offer either a mask for your hands while you're having your toes done, or a mask for your feet while your fingers are buffed and polished. The Summer Fresh Pedicure, offered in season, works refreshing grapefruit, lemongrass and rosemary aromatics into your treatment. Sugaring, a method of hair removal that is said to last several weeks longer than waxing, is also available.
Basic hair services are also offered at the salon, including shampoos, cuts, blow-dries, setting and styling. Of course, nothing is really “basic” at Out of the Woods. All hair services include a scalp, neck and shoulder massage, as well as a mask for your hands.

Individual wraps are not on the menu at Out of the Woods Spa, but many of the Vermont spa's comprehensive treatments incorporate a wrap as part of the service. The spa’s signature treatment, the simply-namedUltimate Body Treatment, incorporates a seaweed body wrap, a heat treatment designed to tone and nourish skin, a soak in a hydrotherapy tub and a full body massage. The Evening Primrose Body Treatment includes an application of warmed Evening Primrose Cream to the body, which is then wrapped in a light cotton gauze. The cocoon-like wrap helps moisturize dry skin and heal skin that's been damaged by sun or wind, leaving it rose-petal fresh.

The fitness center at Twin Farms, the hotel that houses the Out of the Woods Spa, can be found adjacent to the sap. Open 24 hours a day, the fitness center is supplied with cardio equipment, resistance weight machines, free weights, exercise videos and yoga mats that you can take out for a stretch in the fresh air. The gym also has a steam room, in case you didn't work up enough of a sweat during your workout. Conveniently, the fitness center is located on the opposite end of the building from the treatment rooms, so your massage won't be interrupted by the sound of whirring treadmills or clanking weights.

Out of the Woods Spa provides plenty of drinks to keep you hydrated before or after a treatment, from chilled and room temperature bottled water, to icy sodas and juices and a selection of teas from Harney and Sons. If you're not done with your drink when it's time for your massage, the Vermont spa will give you a to-go cup to take into the treatment room with you. The spa is located right underneath Twin Farms' pub, so if you're craving something you don't see in the waiting room, staff are more than happy to pop upstairs and grab it for you. The pub features a fully-stocked bar that’s also a good spot for a post-treatment aperitif.

The interior of Out of the Woods Spa is designed with a palette of charming, muted colors: soothing cream, blue and green tones blend in with the thick trees and plants surrounding the spa, promoting a sense of peace and tranquility. Art pieces hang all over the walls in the waiting room, our favorite being a picture of a dog sitting meditatively on the end of a diving board, surveying a body of water. Two armchairs and a sofa in the waiting area comfortably seat four people, plenty of room for this small Vermont spa with only two treatment rooms.
The changing rooms have open-style lockers with hooks for your belongings, and pretty mosaic tiles in the showers that have an iridescent quality to them. High quality stone and tile is also used in the treatment rooms, which have a cave-like feel thanks to the lack of windows, though they are perhaps better lit than most caverns.

The treatment menu at Out of the Woods Spa is designed exclusively for the hotel, meaning each service is completely unique. The refreshingly compact list doesn't offer a ton of options-just eight spa services and five salon treatments-but each is something that can't be experienced at any other spa. Here are our picks for the five must-try treatments at Out of the Woods:
1. Book the three-part express treatment Downright Spruced Up, which freshens up your whole body in just 90 minutes. An exfoliating rub is followed by a massage using Soothe, the spa's blend of sandalwood, orange, ginger and chamomile oil that warms up your muscles and promotes circulation. Next, you'll have a facial, and finally a maintenance manicure that leave hands pretty and polished.
2. Some of the treatments at Out of the Woods are inspired by the seasons. One such service is the Winter Soul Soother, a full body service consisting of a gentle dry-brushing, body exfoliation, a full body massage and a warming honey and mango body mask whose sweet summery scent will help you forget the snow outside.
3. The Evening Primrose Body Treatment is a soothing solution for dry or sun-damaged skin. This 90-minute service begins with a body brushing and exfoliation, followed by an application of warmed Evening Primrose Cream and a light cotton gauze wrap. While the cream repairs your skin, you're treated to a scalp and foot massage, followed by a full-body massage after the wrap comes off.
4. An exfoliating salt body scrub helps brighten up dull winter skin with dry-brushing, exfoliation and a hydrotherapy massage that uses a blend of mineral salts and pure essential oils. By the end, your skin will be soft, smooth and ready for spring.
5. We think no one should leave this Vermont spa without trying its signature service, the Ultimate Body Treatment, known by regulars simply as the “UBT”. Over an hour and a half of bliss begin with a body brush and Dead Sea salt exfoliation that sloughs off all your dead skin cells. Next, you'll rinse off and slip into the hydrotherapy tub where you'll be simultaneously massaged by jets of water and the expert hands of your therapists. You'll then have a seaweed body wrap and a face and scalp massage, after which you'll rinse off one last time to remove the mud and finally be treated to a full body massage using a relaxing grapefruit and juniper-scented cream.

Book a treatment at Out of the Woods Spa at Vermont’s Twin Farms resorts and the first thing you’ll do is slip into a thick, waffled, cream-colored robe by Castello of Italy. They’re found rolled up in plentiful supply on shelves in the cozy changing rooms. The robes are a good size: petite spa-goers won't be swimming in them, but they are plenty comfortable for those who like a little extra coverage (which comes in handy when you’re slipping back to your private cottage, as many guests have been known to do at this casual resort). The Vermont spa provides beige plastic spa sandals of both thong and banded varieties, which come in a variety of sizes. They tend to run a little small, so pick up a size larger than your normal shoe size to give your feet plenty of room.

The collaboration between Richard Howard of Arcania Apothecary and Twin Farms is the driving force behind Out of the Woods, the celebrated spa at Twin Farms. With his own line, Arcania Apothecary, Howard has created a range of therapeutic botanicals to which there is no equal. The exclusive Out of the Woods products were created to capture a perfect balance of Western and Eastern learning, using the finest natural raw materials. The wealth and diversity of botanicals and exotic aromatics are blended by hand to create effective and innovative products that are a genuine pleasure to use. Our philosophy is primarily expressed through the honest approach to our client as to what is real about our products, as opposed to trading upon illusion and promise, a fundamental marketing tool for the industry as a whole.

Though the spa traffic is fairly quiet and the facility is available to resort residents only, you may be more comfortable withprized belongings stowed in your room. Or do as we did and bring your jewelry into the treatment room; the therapist will provide a small dish in which to store everything.

Arcania Apothecary has developed each and every treatment, as well as product, used in the spa specifically for Twin Farms. With such rare ingredients and artisanal methods, the products are consequently treatment-led as opposed to market-led. Not to mention, Richard Howard travels to Twin Farms to do the training, which is specified to his precise design esthetic.

After washing off the excess mud in another quick rain-shower, your treatment will end with a complete body massage using the exclusive body contour cream -
The treatment menu at Out of the Woods Spa is designed exclusively for the hotel, meaning each service is completely unique.
While the spa menu at Out of the Woods spa doesn’t change often with the newest fad or fashion, it’s worth knowing that throughout the year you can take advantage of the seasonal exclusives that are designed to reflect the time of year of each visit.
