What is the cancellation policy at Spa Gaucin?
Should you need to ax your appointment for any reason, Spa Gaucin has a pretty simple cancellation policy. The Five-Star spa requires at least 24 hours’ advance notice to cancel a treatment without incurring a fee. However, if you don’t make it within that window, but you’d like to reschedule your scrub for another day, you still ought to call, since guests who give notice within 24 hours will only be charged a $40 rescheduling fee instead of the full price of the service, which you’ll have to pay if you cancel or just don’t show up. We recommend keeping the spa’s phone number handy for any last-minute emergencies or to avoid any unnecessary charges to your credit card.

For even more serenity, an underwater music system pumps tunes to listen to while you practice your butterfly technique. Use of the pool is complimentary for resort guests, or when you purchase a treatment at the Five-Star Orange County spa. Post-dip, make use of the spa’s locker room facilities, such as the steam room, Jacuzzi and sauna.

As with the rest of the hotel, Spa Gaucin draws its inspiration, and its name, from the small seaside town of Gaucin, Spain. Accordingly, the interior is designed in a soothing Mediterranean style, replete with dark, rich woods, stalky plants, black and tan marble tiles on fireplaces and tubs, nature-inspired artwork and neutral, beige walls and carpets that make these other elements pop. Seating is sleek and modern, yet plush and comfortable with cushy throw pillows. The overall effect is elegant, but understated and warm like the Mediterranean sun. There’s no doubt that drifting off into a state of total relaxation will be effortless, due in part to your calming surroundings.

If you’re in the mood for a cocktail after your treatment at Spa Gaucin, there are plenty of bars onsite at The St. Regis Monarch Beach that you could patronize. Stop by Club 19, near the golf course, or nurse a beer at the Lobby Lounge where you can cozy up to the fireplace or get some fresh air on the terrace. The Lobby Lounge also has live music on Friday and Saturday, as well as a DJ on Thursday. The bar at the Four-Star Stonehill Tavern restaurant whips up some interesting specialty cocktails as well, such as the cloverleaf, made with Nolet’s Silver gin, housemade raspberry syrup, egg white, lemon and mint. If you’d like to get out of the St. Regis, nearby in The Ritz-Carlton, Laguna Niguel, the hotel bar has a jaw-dropping view of the ocean, set atop a popular surfer beach.

Ditch the taboo that spas are female-only sanctuaries, because the just for men facial at Spa Gaucin addresses men’s skin needs, focusing on irritation caused by shaving and congestion. The Five-Star treatment begins with a deep cleansing, exfoliation and extractions to clear the skin. Afterward, a custom mask hydrates while a shoulder massage deepens your relaxation. The nearby Vogue Salon also offers a gentlemen’s manicure, treating your phalanges with a seaweed soak and light buffing to leave you looking dashing and well-groomed. Of course, men can also discover luxurious facilities to prolong a pampering session within the spa’s locker room, such as a steam room, sauna and Jacuzzi.

Whether shorthand math was never your strong suit or you’re in a rush to make a dinner reservation, you needn’t worry about figuring out who and how much to tip after your appointment at Spa Gaucin. Refrain from awkwardly breaking out the tip calculator (the spa actually prefers that you leave your phone off, anyway), because all the work is done for you. The Orange County spa automatically adds 20 percent gratuity to the bill for any service you get. However, you can adjust that amount at your discretion, so if your therapist does an extra fantastic job this time, just have the spa adjust your bill to throw a little something extra their way.

You don’t even have to leave the premises to enjoy fine dining near Spa Gaucin. Onsite at The St. Regis Monarch Beach hotel is the Four-Star restaurant Stonehill Tavern — from celebrity chef Michael Mina — where you can order an amazing lobster pot pie that will be served to you tableside. Just across the Pacific Coast highway, the Three-Star Raya restaurant offers gorgeous views of the ocean out of its gigantic windows. If you’re up for a drive, the Four-Star Andrea in Newport Beach and the Five-Star Studio in Laguna Beach are each about half an hour away. Needless to say, you won’t be at a loss for top-notch dining post-facial.

Wraps are designed with Spa Gaucin’s namesake Spanish coastal town in mind, and make use of natural Mediterranean ingredients. Should you opt out of a facial or massage, you can book the devine grape seed mud wrap made with clay to revitalize your skin and grape seeds to tone, moisturize and absorb impurities. There’s also the tomato basil nourishing wrap, which sounds like a kind of sandwich, but is actually a moisturizing, antioxidant-filled body treatment that uses extracts of orange fruit, olive leaves, rosemary leaves and lavender flowers in addition to the title ingredients. Both these wraps are 60 minutes long and cost $175. Spa Gaucin does refresh their treatment menu frequently, so be sure to ask what wraps are currently featured when you book.

Customization is the order of the day at this Forbes Travel Guide Five-Star spa, with add-ons available for each and every massage. You can add any combination of deep tissue, coastal stone, reflexology or stretching techniques to the Orange County Spaâs Signature Mediterranean massage. If you aren't sure what it is you need or want, the Artisan's Intuition massage includes an assessment of your bodyâs needs so your therapist can decide on the best treatment option for your treatment. There is also a plethora of enhancements that can be added to any treatment, including a red wine bath or mint foot treatment. This is Five-Star service at its best.

Sloughing off any dead skin is always a good thing, which is why two different scrubs are available at Spa Gaucin. The first is the grape seed rosemary scrub, which draws obvious inspiration from the Mediterranean town of Gaucin, Spain for which the Orange County spa is named. Grape seeds and grape seed oil are infused with chamomile extract and lavender, rosemary, peppermint, jojoba, eucalyptus and tea tree essential oils for a scrub that’s both exfoliating and aromatic. A somewhat more conventional scrub is the antioxidant-rich chardonnay sugar scrub. After sloughing off all your dull skin, your therapist applies a chardonnay, lavender and rosemary body butter that helps seal in your new glow.

To purchase a gift certificate, talk to the resort’s concierge, call the Five-Star Orange County spa directly, or purchase one online on the spa’s website. Gift cards are redeemable not only for any spa treatment on the menu, but also for private fitness services at the gym, or at the spa boutique, where your giftee can purchase skin care products used during services. Who knows, your recipient might be so touched that he or she might return the favor down the road.

Treatments at Spa Gaucin are palpably influenced by the Orange County spa’s namesake — the tiny seaside town of Gaucin, Spain. Mediterranean ingredients abound throughout the treatment menu. Add-ons and options make many of the services customizable, so you can design just the right service for your appointment. Here are our picks for the five best treatments to get at Spa Gaucin:
1. Signature massage. The standard, signature Mediterranean massage is great on its own, with aromatic chardonnay massage oil soothing your senses, but custom additions of deep tissue, coastal stone, reflexology or stretching techniques ensure that this treatment is a perfect fit.
2. CoffeeBerry Natureceuticals Facial. For anti-aging benefits, you can’t beat the coffeeberry natureceuticals facial. Coffeeberry extract helps visibly reduce fine lines and wrinkles while simultaneously soothing, leaving your skin fresher and younger-looking than when you arrived.
3. Couples retreats. Any of the three couples retreats would make for a lovely and relaxing romantic getaway. The signature Mediterranean massage or Mediterranean deep massage is combined with a chardonnay bubble bath, red currant bath or lemon verbena bath, during which you and your partner will be served wine and fresh grapes — true Mediterranean hospitality.
4. Chocolate pedicure. A decadent and daring treatment for any sweet tooth is Spa Gaucin’s chocolate pedicure. Snack on delicious truffles while your therapist exfoliates your legs and feet with a chocolate sugar scrub and applies a chocolate masque.
5. Maternity massage. Mothers-to-be have specific, special aches and pains. Expert therapists will get you back to your glowing, healthy state with a maternity massage that soothes your sore feet, back and neck.

If you decide to tote along your middle school or high-school offspring, Five-Star Spa Gaucin offers three different treatment packages for teens, specifically designed to address their needs and make them feel special during the crucial stage in their early lives. The Feria Beauty package teaches teens to care of their skin with a 60-minute facial, skin care coaching from an expert esthetician and a makeup consultation. The Feria Friendship package lets two friends get side-by-side facials and brow shapings, and the Feria Health package gives advice on food choices and fitness with a nutrition consultation and personal training session. If your teen is craving a massage or scrub, Spa Gaucin also offers a program called Petite Retreats for spa goers aged 13 and older. Teens can book a facial, massage, or scrub in a 45-minute time length—just enough time sooth the skin without getting too bored.

The Five-Star Orange County spa offers several retreats for two — some of which are designed for friends, and some for couples. You and a friend can enjoy the Gaucin duo or Mediterranean duo retreat, which each consist of a different massage and facial combo. Or, you can hit the spa with your special someone and choose between the Love, Life and Wellness retreats, which offer different combinations of massages and baths. Wine and fresh grapes are served with all the couples retreats for you to enjoy in the bath.

Spa Gaucin is a member of the Starwood Spa Collection and as such, adheres to their philosophy based on seven pillars of well-being. The pillars are: beauty, life, balance, harmony, aqua, vitality, nature and nutrition. But Spa Gaucin distinguishes itself from the 50-plus other spas in the collection with a strong theme. The Five-Star Orange County spa is inspired by the little town of Gaucin, Spain, and consequently features Mediterranean-inspired treatments to match. The spa proclaims that “every moment in life is worth a celebration” and aims to celebrate life, love and wellness. No matter which treatment you choose to book during your visit, you can rest assured that your experience will reflect the seven pillars.

Wear whatever you are most comfortable in when visiting Spa Gaucin. You really won’t be in your clothes too long, as you’ll be handed a white terry-cloth-lined robe and black strappy slippers after check-in. After you are shown to the locker room, feel free to relax in the buff with your robe on. Then make use of the wet areas — walk past the mirrored vanities toward the whirlpool with a cascading waterfall. There’s a eucalyptus-infused steam room, an aromatic sauna and a dry sauna nearby. Be sure to pack your swimsuit if you want to take a dip in the 22-meter three-lane lap pool (tip: take a dunk to hear tunes from the underwater sound system), which is outside near the fitness center. After a treatment at the Forbes Travel Guide Five-Star spa, shower in the locker rooms — they come stocked with shampoo, conditioner, body wash, shaving cream and razors. They have everything you need to go from treatment room to dinner at Michael Mina’s Stonehill Tavern, which is also right inside The St. Regis Monarch Beach.

Spa Gaucin has a quaint spa shop, and it’s open early and closes late (from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.) for your shopping convenience. The boutique peddles Spa Gaucin Olive Leaf, its signature skincare line; Olavie, an antioxidant skincare brand; and Osea, seaweed-packed, nutrient-rich products that are used in the Orange County spa’s facials. We loved the scent and feel of the Olive Leaf shampoo and conditioner — try them out in the locker room showers. At the boutique, you can purchase everything used in your treatment, from the massage oils to the room spray. Your therapist will even fill out a card for you that highlights what he or she used during your treatment. That way, you’ll know to buy the pleasant lemon-verbena room spray before leaving the Forbes Travel Guide Five-Star spa.

If you want to bring your child to Spa Gaucin, try its Petite Retreats program for spa-goers ages 13 and older. Teens can book a facial, massage or scrub in a 45-minute session — just enough time to stave off boredom. A parent must accompany teens to the Orange County spa and sign them in, but from there, they can partake in their own fun spa day. And if you’d like some time in the spa on your own, but have a younger child (ages 5 to 12), enroll him in at the Sandcastle Kids Club (you have to be a guest at The St. Regis Monarch Beach). As part of the half- and full-day programs, kids will go on beach trips, play in the pool and have popcorn and movie nights. And if your little one is younger than 5, try the St. Regis sitters program, where an accredited babysitter watches your child in your guest room. Then you can have some guilt-free “me” time in the Forbes Travel Guide Five-Star spa.

At Spa Gaucin, you can have most of the treatments on the spa menu performed in the comfort of your St. Regis Monarch Beach room. Facials, nail services, haircuts and couple’s massage can all be booked as an in-room service. Of course, this convenience will tack on some fees, depending upon length and type of service. In-room treatments are an especially nice option if you’re preparing for a big event like a wedding — get an updo, makeup application and manicure while in your robe. Just be sure to talk to spa or salon representative about these details when booking, if this is your preference.

After checking in at Spa Gaucin, you have a few options: head to the wet areas (there’s a whirlpool with a cascading waterfall, an aromatic sauna and a eucalyptus-infused steam room) or unwind in the waiting area. We chose to do both. Get into spa mode by sitting in the waiting area’s large yellow-and-gray, circular couch, which faces a marble fireplace. Even though it’s usually warm outside the Orange County spa, logs are always burning in the fireplace. The heat and crackling sound have a healing quality, and your muscles just seem to relax. Fresh flowers also adorn the space; when we were there, large, white orchids sat near the sofa. The overhead light is large, but it’s dim and pleasant, so you don’t have to worry about it interrupting your calm. Should you start getting sleepy in the warm waiting area, walk over to the nearby boutique, where you can find the Five-Star spa’s signature Olive Leaf products and antioxidant-rich Olavie lotions — both lines are used during your treatments.

When you check in at the front desk at Spa Gaucin, a staff member will walk you back to the waiting area’s comfy bright couch and crackling fireplace and hand you a white robe and black slippers before you are led to the locker room. For some privacy, use one of the curtained-off changing rooms and slip into your soft robe. It’s silky on the outside and terry cloth on the inside, which will help sop up oil post-treatment or water post-whirlpool. The robe comes with the logo of the Orange County spa and large pockets. Unlike a lot of too-loose or too-tight spa footwear, the Oka b. slippers come in a variety of sizes and actually fit. We like them because they’re comfortable, non-slip and even stylish with their thin straps. You’ll wear your robe and slippers most of your time at the Forbes Travel Guide Five-Star spa — whether you’re lounging by the fireplace in the relaxation lounge, taking in the eucalyptus scent in the steam room or heading to a treatment room.
-
On the day of your Spa Gaucin visit, we recommend that you arrive early and stay late to indulge in the wet areas (thankfully, the spa is open from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m.). When you walk in the locker room, past the mirrored vanities and the hall of showers, the whirlpool with a cascading waterfall will seem to beckon you. The circular pool is warm (but not too hot) and equipped with a sitting ledge, in case you don’t want to get your hair wet. The aromatic sauna, steam room and dry sauna are in the locker room, too, and we suggest that you spend some time in each one. We loved the healing feeling and scent of the eucalyptus-infused steam room. Also, be sure to pack a swimsuit, so you can swim in the 22-meter three-lane lap pool (plunge underwater to hear music), or just lounge poolside, sip a smoothie and bask in the Southern California sun. With all of these wet areas, you can spend all day at the Forbes Travel Guide Five-Star spa — and you should.

You won’t have to endure a growling stomach while spending the day at Spa Gaucin. Head to the lounge for a snack spread that includes whole raw almonds, fresh apples and orange-infused chilled water. If light bites don’t cut it, order off of the spa menu. The St. Regis Monarch Beach’s executive chef, Frederic Castan, prepares all of the Mediterranean-inspired dishes and uses organic local ingredients. We like the salad of fresh baby beets, mâche and creamy Moonlight goat cheese tossed with aged sherry-honey vinaigrette. For something heavier but still healthy, try the whole-wheat wrap filled with grilled veggies, hummus, cucumber and non-fat raita. Wash it down with a nice glass (or two) of vino. The menu offers plenty of options, including sparkling, white and red wines.

You can turn your treatment at Spa Gaucin into a spa day by ordering breakfast or lunch. For the spa menu, executive chef Frederic Capstan whips up dishes inspired by the Mediterranean and that use organic local ingredients. A good light option is a salad — we like the one with fresh baby beets, mâche, Moonlight goat cheese and an aged sherry-honey vinaigrette. Heavier alternatives include the whole wheat wrap with grilled vegetables, hummus, cucumber and fat-free yogurt raita, or a grilled herbed chicken breast sandwich with roasted pepper and sun-dried tomato hummus, butter lettuce and roasted red peppers on seven-grain rustic bread with seasonal vegetable julienne. Since you are being so healthy, don’t feel guilty about washing it down with a nice glass (or two) of vino. Choose from sparkling, white and red wines. If you just want a snack rather than a full-fledged meal, the Forbes Travel Guide Five-Star spa offers complimentary bites like whole raw almonds and apples in its lounge.

There are four couples suites at Spa Gaucin, each of which boasts a marble fireplace and plush chaise lounges. Certain couples lounges also have private whirlpool baths, or even an ocean view.

To find the entrance to Spa Gaucin, venture to the northeast side of The St. Regis Monarch Beach. Once you enter this wing of the resort, you’ll find an unassuming green carpet and a glass-topped semi-circular dark wood desk with spa menus, a few products and fresh flowers. There are two computers behind the front desk, and a staff member stands ready to get you set up. Two sconces are mounted to the wall behind the desk, but your eyes will be drawn to the waterfall in between them. While you’re being checked in, the trickling sound of the waterfall helps transition you to a treatment at the Forbes Travel Guide Five-Star spa. Don’t worry, you’ll get to see the cascading water up close — after check-in, a spa staffer will lead you to the waterfall to make a wish.

If you seek the healing power of aromatherapy, opt for Spa Gaucin’s signature Mediterranean massage. This 75- or 90-minute treatment incorporates a fragrant chardonnay massage oil, a blend of grape-seed extract and jojoba, macadamia nut, avocado and coconut oils. After the warm chardonnay oil is applied, a fig and cassis body butter is massaged into your skin from head to toe. Customize the boozy treatment to include reflexology, stretching or deep-tissue or stone massage. There’s also a new aromatherapy massage on the menu called Emotherapy, which combines a variety of healing essential oils. Even if you don’t choose one of the aromatherapy massages at the Forbes Travel Guide Five-Star spa, you’ll sniff calming scents throughout the space. In the treatment rooms, we enjoyed the fresh smell of lemon-verbena room spray, which we later found out is for sale in the spa boutique.

If your sore body is in need of an acupressure treatment, go for Spa Gaucin’s signature Mediterranean massage. For an additional $10 to $20, depending on the length of your massage, your therapist can add on more deep-tissue work. Since this treatment is customizable, you’ll get your pressure preference along with the fresh scent of the chardonnay massage oil, a warm mixture of grape-seed extract and jojoba, macadamia nut, avocado and coconut oils. Just be sure to talk to a therapist at the Forbes Travel Guide Five-Star spa beforehand about the amount of pressure you want, and let him know throughout the treatment if he should put more weight behind it or lighten up.

At Vogue Salon, located near the entrance of Spa Gaucin, choose from a variety of nail, hair or makeup services. In the modern salon, six styling chairs line the mirror-covered white walls. Though it isn’t austere — there’s a pop of teal along the back wall of the salon, and the entire space is decorated with fresh magenta orchids. Here, you can book appointments for a haircut, a blowout, single-process coloring, full or partial highlights, straightening or a scalp treatment. Continue past the salon check-in desk and you’ll see the well-lit makeup room, which will help you get all dolled up after a treatment at the Forbes Travel Guide Five-Star spa (possibly for a dinner date at the onsite Stonehill Tavern restaurant from chef Michael Mina). There are seemingly endless amounts of makeup hues and brushes.
And if you have the time, book a nail treatment. We love the mani-pedi rooms; with oversized pedicure massage chairs, dim lighting, a blanket to place over your legs and a curtain that divides each chair from another for privacy, it doesn’t get better than this. For serious pampering, try the 75-minute Tuscan pedicure, and while you’re at it, book a manicure, too — the mani stations come equipped with suede chairs and cozy blankets. If you don’t have that kind of time, opt for the 45- or 60-minute manicures that use scents such as pomegranate and fig and Tuscan citrus and herb. Vogue Salon also offers a few men-specific services on its menu, including the olive leaf 45-minute manicure and the 60-minute pedicure. -
It seems like every treatment is unique at Spa Gaucin — chalk it up to the frequently refreshed menu and well-trained therapists. Some of the standouts include treatments inspired by the ocean, which makes sense, since the Orange County spa is part of The St. Regis Monarch Beach and sits on 172 acres overlooking the Pacific. We love the Ocean Oxygen Facial, ideal for normal, dry or sensitive skin. This treatment infuses skin with oxygen and mineral-rich ingredients like seaweed from the Osea skincare line. The Ocean Salt Scrub and Healing Wrap, which comes in either a 75- or 90-minute session, exfoliates and soothes skin. The treatment rooms all come with a tub, so it’s easy to add on the 20-minute lemon-verbena bath — a unique and relaxing service at the Forbes Travel Guide Five-Star spa.

The Spa Gaucin menu is updated frequently, but the latest treatment is Di Lusso. The two-hour Mediterranean-inspired service starts with steeping your hair in nourishing Moroccan mint argan oil, followed by a soothing pressure-point scalp massage. Next, the therapist gently works your muscles to release tension with a restorative full-body rubdown. The organic grape seed oil, which is infused with essential-oil extracts, deeply moisturizes your skin throughout the treatment. The Di Lusso ends with an exfoliation of your hands and feet, reflexology and a warm towel wrap. If aromatherapy treatments appeal more to you, check out the Forbes Travel Guide Five-Star spa’s new aromatic Emotherapy; the therapist uses essential oils to massage away any pent-up stress.
