Where is The American Club located?
The luxury American Club resort is the centerpiece of Kohler, Wis., a planned community that John Michael Kohler founded in 1912 to accommodate his expanding bath fixture business’ growing workforce. The historic Tudor-style American Club hotel, formerly worker housing, is just minutes from Interstate 43, west of Sheboygan — about a one-hour drive north from Milwaukee, a 2.5-hour drive from Chicago and just four miles from Lake Michigan. The American Club’s address at 419 Highland Drive, between Upper Road and Lower Falls Road, but you’ll know you’ve arrived when you spot the stately, red-brick American Club’s dramatically lit façade.

The American Club design style is a rich mélange of late 19th and early 20th century European and American Tudor revival, with arts and crafts era décor complemented by the contemporary chic aesthetic of the Kohler brand family. An eclectic yet definitively elegant design balance is achieved through the juxtaposition of beautiful oak woodwork, stained glass and original decorative Kohler antiques against more modern Baker and McGuire furnishings, Ann Sacks tile work, and, of course, Kohler bathroom fixtures. Elements of a bygone era such as hand-woven tapestries, immigrant portraits and citizenship papers are elevated to artwork status in homage to the American Club’s origins. Once a taproom for workers, the Horse & Plow is adorned with vintage saddles and farm tools, while the Immigrant Restaurant interior pays tribute to old-world Europe with authentic ornamentation, including pewter candlesticks, fine antique porcelain and framed etchings. You won’t find another Four-Star hotel quite like The American Club.

With five on-site dining options, The American Club has no shortage of tasty, interesting treats. These are five of our favorites:
1) The Wisconsin artisanal cheese plate, available at both the Immigrant Restaurant and the Winery Bar, offers a choice of more than 40 craft cheeses. Come on, you can’t go to Wisconsin without having cheese — it’s a must.
2) While the Horse and Plow’s beer list is impressive, the Jigger Ale is a standout. Custom brewed for the American Club’s sister property in St. Andrews, Scotland, there’s only one other place on earth where you’ll find it. And it’s delicious to boot.
3) Chef Matthew Bauer’s dual knack for gathering the highest quality artisanal ingredients and deftly melding unusual flavor combinations is showcased in the ancho chile and coffee-braised beef short ribs, his signature dish.
4) The Wisconsin Room’s Friday night seafood buffet offers a feast of seafood-related delights. Go tropical with Hawaiian barbecued grilled mahi-mahi or grab some garlic seared scallops hot out of the pan at the chef’s station, or choose from the dizzying array of other salad, seafood, meat and dessert options.
5) Ask your server at the Immigrant Restaurant for dessert advice and chances are you’ll end up the hazelnut mousseline crunch tower. With its butter ice cream and sweet, salty tuile cookie, the restaurant’s signature dessert is a can’t-miss finish to any meal.

As a Forbes Travel Guide Five-Star hotel, The American Club offers up more top-of-the-line amenities than you’ll likely have time to schedule. The five best:
1. World-class golf. Both The American Club’s renowned Whistling Straits Golf Course, which hosted the 2010 PGA Tournament, and its Blackwolf Run course attract serious golfers to their beautiful Wisconsin settings. Whistling Straits, an Alice and Pete Dye-designed course, features the grass-and-dune Irish course, as well as the Straits, which hugs Lake Michigan from a bluff in the style of the historic Scottish and Irish links. Blackwolf Run, also designed by Pete Dye, is located in a lush river basin and surrounded by forestry.
2. Kohler Waters Spa. Wisconsin’s only Forbes Travel Guide Five-Star spa, Kohler Waters Spa attracts spa-goers year-round with its signature Kohler water treatments as well as its inviting mosaic-tiled swimming pool and whirlpools and glass-enclosed rooftop lounge.
3. The Immigrant Restaurant. Chef Matthew Bauer prepares mouthwatering seasonal dishes made with locally sourced artisanal ingredients at the Forbes Travel Guide Four-Star restaurant. The wine list is also impressive, featuring a number of hard-to-find favorites.
4. Sports Core. Every guest at The American Club has free access to the Kohler resort’s health club — and this is no run of the mill gym. Sports Core includes a man-made beach, an outdoor whirlpool alongside a fireplace, a pool for doing laps, family pool, tennis and racquetball courts, and workout equipment in the fitness center.
5. Meeting spaces. Dozens of meeting spaces are available throughout the resort — at Sports Core, Whistling Straits Golf Course, Blackwolf Run and Inn on Woodlake — offering business travelers easy access to amenities like golf courses, pools, fishing spots and the spa. Bottom line: You don’t have to sit inside a frigid air-conditioned room all day.

The American Club is outfitted with no fewer than five restaurants on property. The resort’s showcase restaurant is the Immigrant Restaurant, which offers fine dining with an emphasis on local and artisanal ingredient under the direction of chef Matthew Bauer.
The casual, family-friendly Horse & Plow tavern offers pub fare with a notable beer list. Meanwhile, in the Five-Star hotel’s courtyard, the Greenhouse Cage offers light lunch, coffee, snacks and housemade ice cream. The Wisconsin Room, open for breakfast and dinner, is additionally known for its Friday night seafood buffet and extravagant Sunday brunch.
A few minutes away via the resort’s free shuttle is Cucina, serving fine Italian specialties at the Shops at Woodlake. As an American Club guest, you can buy a guest pass to dine in the members-only River Wildlife Lodge, while the Whistling Straits and Blackwolf Run golf courses offer their own dining options. You’ll probably need a few days to explore all the food options at The American Club; and even when you do, you’ll likely need to go back to try all the different delicious options.

The guest rooms at The American Club are outfitted with Kohler-related products through and through — Baker furniture, Ann Sacks tile, Kohler fixtures — and the hotel’s bath products are no exception. Each room’s bathroom comes stocked with Kohler-designed signature bath products, which another company manufactures on its behalf. In the shower, you’ll find the same shampoo and conditioner featured in the locker rooms at the Forbes Travel Guide Five-Star Kohler Waters Spa. Other little bath goodies you’ll want to stash in your overnight bag are a soothing cucumber facial bar, a refreshing body bar, shower gel and moisturizer.

The construction of The American Club predates the era of porches, patios and terraces. The Forbes Travel Guide Five-Star hotel was built in 1919 as pragmatic dormitory-style lodging for the Kohler Company’s immigrant workers. In 1978, the building was placed on the National Register of Historic Places, which prohibits architectural renovations and additions to its original exterior façade. One of the presidential suites has a step-out balcony for a breath of fresh air, but it doesn’t provide enough room for seating. On the plus side, the heart of The American Club is a stunning courtyard filled with native Wisconsin vegetation, a gazebo, fountain and an ornate stained-glass antique solarium from Lancashire, England, that was converted into the Greenhouse cafe.

Because The American Club is part of the National Registry of Historic Places, you won’t find a swimming pool on the property itself. However, you’ll receive complimentary access to the Kohler Sports Core Health & Racquet Club with a family swimming pool, adult lap pool, indoor and outdoor whirlpools, and beach access to Wood Lake. Adjacent to the American Club is the Kohler Waters Spa, where you can pay a fee for access to a coed pool with a waterfall and an indoor rooftop whirlpool, along with separate hot tubs and cold plunge pools in the male and female locker rooms — of course, the better option is to just book a treatment at the Forbes Travel Guide Five-Star spa and enjoy the pool as well. Sports Core is less than a five-minute drive with the complimentary hotel shuttle, while the Kohler Waters Spa is just across the street from The American Club and reachable via underground tunnel during the colder months. How’s that for easy access?

You can also take a quick swim in Wood Lake, which comes with a diving raft.
The Forbes Travel Guide Five-Star Kohler Waters Spa has a relaxation pool that’s nice for a refreshing little soak. Between its historic significance as a planned community, its pastoral Wisconsin setting and its association with bath design innovators Kohler, The American Club proves vastly different from any other Five-Star hotel in the world. Only its sister property in St. Andrews, Scotland, can contend. Here’s why:
1. It’s in Wisconsin. Luxury properties are not easy to come by in the Midwest, let alone Wisconsin. The American Club’s location, one hour north of Milwaukee and two and a half hours north of Chicago, makes it easily accessible, while still offering a tranquil pastoral getaway — complete with hiking, biking, cross-country skiing, and of course, world-class golf at the resort’s Whistling Straits course.
2.The town of Kohler has botanical garden status — bet you didn’t know it was possible for a factory town to be a botanical garden. The American Club is one of the only hotels in the nation to receive botanical garden status, which the entire town of Kohler earned in 2004. Enter The American Club’s lush courtyard with its beautiful stained glass Greenhouse Café and bubbling fountains and you’ll discover plants designated with markers that correspond with a free audio tour; handsets are available at the front desk. Also note the beautiful red and rich pink hollyhock flowers blooming around the property: The Kohler daughters planted these decades ago and they’re now infused into some of Kohler Waters Spa’s signature products.
3. It has a rich history — and we mean really rich. Housed in former Kohler worker housing, The American Club hotel nods to its rich history at every turn. Immigration and industrialism are the recurring themes: While tours are available at the factory across the street, the Kohler Design Center showcases the creativity and always-impressive designs the company has developed over the years. In the guest rooms, portraits of Wisconsin immigrants with short bios adorn the walls, while the Immigrant Restaurant pays homage to early Kohler workers with six rooms designed to reflect their European homelands.
4. Kohler plumbing abounds. When it comes to plumbing, even the most impressive luxury hotels become suddenly unremarkable. Not so at The American Club, thanks to the property being a part of Kohler’s bath empire. As the room price points increase, the fixtures become increasingly high-end — and high-tech — but even many of the lower-tier rooms feature covet-worthy tile and massage-jet showerheads.
5. World-class amenities such as The American Club’s renowned Whistling Straits Golf Course, which hosted the 2010 PGA Tournament, and its Kohler Waters Spa, Wisconsin’s only Five-Star spa, also set the resort apart from other luxury properties. A destination in its own right, the Alice and Pete Dye-designed Whistling Straits Golf Course features the grass-and-dune Irish course, as well as the Straits, which hugs Lake Michigan from a bluff in the style of the historic Scottish and Irish links. Meanwhile, the Kohler Waters Spa has a reputation nationally for its innovative water treatments and therapeutic custom-built showers.

You won’t need a car, a cab or even a limo during your stay at The American Club, thanks to the resort’s free shuttle service. The mini buses zip guests around all of Kohler’s main attractions — The American Club, the Kohler Waters Spa, the Carriage Inn, the Inn on Wood Lake, the Shops at Woodlake, Sports Core and the Kohler Design Center — at regular intervals and on-demand. For Whistling Straits Golf Course, shuttles depart from in front of The American Club and Inn on Woodlake at the top of every hour from 6 a.m. to 10:30 p.m. daily, returning to both hotels at the bottom of every hour. So while you might have to drive a little out of the way to get to the resort, you can keep the car in park for the duration of your stay at the Five-Star American Club.

The historic American Club luxury hotel does not allow pets, but the resort’s more contemporary Kohler property, Inn on Woodlake, recently became dog friendly. Specifically, five rooms now allow canines, so reservations must be made well in advance to ensure availability. A $75 dog surcharge will be added to your bill, and certain restrictions apply. For example, dogs must be under 70 pounds, crated when they’re in the room alone and kept out of the inn’s public areas. Also, only two dogs are allowed per room and owners must clean up after their animals at all times. Once you get settled, you and your pup will want explore the nearby walking trails — the Inn on Woodlake provides a map of recommended paths, as well as a list of local pet supply shops, dog walker services and veterinarians.

Babysitting services are also available during certain hours at Sports Core. The services at Kids Core, the health club’s on-site drop-off play area, are designed to allow parents to work out, visit the Kohler Waters Spa or take classes at Yoga on the Lake.

The cancellation policy at The American Club is not kind to last-minute schedule changes; if you try to alter or cancel your reservation within seven days of your scheduled arrival time, you’ll be required to forfeit the deposit of one night’s room and tax. The deposit is initially charged on all rooms when you book your reservation. There aren’t any fees associated with reservations that are changed or cancelled eight or more days in advance of your scheduled arrival time — so if you’re going to change your mind about staying at the Five-Star hotel, we suggest you do it well in advance.

As a luxury Five-Star resort, The American Club offers room rates that generally fall into a higher price point with expected seasonal fluctuations. Additionally, rates will depend on the room, day of the week, availability and other factors. On the more value-minded side, standard rooms fluctuate between $202 and $410. Deluxe rooms, meanwhile, run $255 to $410; Carriage House rooms and suites run $268 to $931; and the Superior and Heritage rooms run $330 to $720. On the extreme end of luxury (even for The American Club), suites run $617 to $1,154, while the super luxe one-bedroom presidential suites — compete with amenities like separate living rooms and dining areas — cost between $885 and $1,464, depending on the season. Trumping them all in terms of luxury is the Eau de Vie suite, which features a fireplace, private elevator, two powder rooms, a wet bar, and state-of-the-art Kohler shower and bath fixtures, including the sõk bathtub with chromatherapy lights. You can call this suite home for about $1,500 a night. We think the rates are actually pretty reasonable at The American Club, considering it’s a Forbes Travel Guide Four-Star hotel set in a rustic location — something you don’t see every day.

The American Club concierge is a veritable entertainment director for activities at and around the hotel property. Primary services include booking Kohler Waters Spa treatments and salon services, scheduling tee times at Whistling Straights or Blackwolf Run golf courses, and making dinner reservations at the Immigrant Restaurant or one of several other Kohler establishments. Depending on the season, the concierge at the Five-Star hotel can organize offsite excursions for fly-fishing daytrips or a visit to the Road America racetrack. Additional assistance is available for renting bicycles in warm weather, and cross-country skis, ice skates and sleds during the winter. If you’re in Kohler on business (perhaps you sell bathroom fixtures?), the concierge can also facilitate the shipment of FedEx deliveries. If you need it done, just ask the concierges at The American Club — that’s why they’re there.

An iterative room renovation project is under way at The American Club. Commencing in 2010, the first phase of updates has been completed to 109 rooms in the east, north and center wings of the hotel. During the fall of 2011, the west wing started renovations. The projected date for completion of the third as well as the fourth and final phase is slated for the summer of 2012. Updates of The American Club include lavish new furnishings from Baker, refinished antique décor and streamlined arrangement of the media and mini-bar area. A notable technological addition to each room at the Five-Star hotel is a connectivity panel adjacent to the flat-screen TV that allows you to plug in your laptops, tablets, and iPods to see photos, play videos and hear music through the television. Even though it’s steeped in history, The American Club does a great job in keeping up with the times to offer you new technologies that make every stay that much better.

The American Club resort lures guests with outstanding service and a long list of amenities. Below are the five things we love the most about the Forbes Travel Guide Five-Star hotel.
1. The golf. With some of the most scenic and sought-after golf courses in the country, The American Club’s golf offerings are not to be missed. The jewel in the resort’s golf crown is Whistling Straits Golf Course, which hosted the 2010 PGA Tournament. The Alice and Pete Dye-designed course features the grass-and-dune Irish course, as well as the Straits, which hugs Lake Michigan from a bluff in the style of legendary Scottish and Irish links. Blackwolf Run, also designed by Pete Dye, is located in a lush river basin and surrounded by forestry.
2. Kohler Waters Spa. The spa’s philosophy follows the theory that water is the essence of life, and accordingly, it offers a number of hydrotherapy experiences you won’t likely find anywhere else. High-end, high-tech and custom-designed Kohler baths and showers are the settings for unique treatments like the lavender rain exfoliation, the H20 inspiration exfoliation and an acoustic bath.
3. The factory town history. It’s hard to imagine that the striking, estate-like Tudor mansion that houses The American Club once served as a factory-worker dormitory. But that has more to do with company founder John Michael Kohler’s appreciation for his employees than any dramatic revamp to the building — even when factory workers roamed the halls here, the estate offered amenities like a dining hall, company bar and bowling alley. Across the street, tours are available of the old factory where Kohler products are still produced. Meanwhile, the Kohler Design Center down the road, known affectionately at “the toilet museum,” showcases the innovative designs created throughout the company’s history. Both the tour and the museum offer free admission.
4. The bathrooms. Given that the hotel is part of the Kohler bath empire, it’s no surprise that the bathrooms here are a standout feature. As guest room price-points increase, the fixtures become increasingly high-end — and high-tech. Consider the hotel’s Eau de Vie Suite, which comes equipped with a $10,000 Kohler sõk overflowing bathtub with chromatherapy lights. Even regular rooms feature stylish tile work and inviting massage-jet showerheads.
5. The Immigrant Restaurant. Chef Matthew Bauer at The Immigrant Restaurant is continually developing his menu to offer new seasonal, locally sourced pleasures. We love the restaurant’s cozy underground setting and appreciate the excellent wine list. The Winery Bar offers cheese and wine tastings; inquire at the front desk about attending a class during your stay.

As a Forbes Travel Guide Five-Star hotel, you can count on outstanding service and a luxurious experience when visiting The American Club. Here are a few things you should know about this distinctive place:
1. The entire building which houses the spa, known as the Carriage House, has a no-kids policy. Children are welcome in the main building but the spa and Carriage House rooms cater to girlfriends on spa weekends, guys and gals on golf trips, and couples seeking a romantic getaway. It’s an indulge-y kind of place (think: wine receptions in your spa robe). But…
2. Just because you spent a pampered weekend here pre-kids doesn’t mean you can’t come back. The American Club recently launched a kids’ program to attract families. Kids get toys, baseball caps and other goodies, plus free meals and bike rentals. The entire family also gets a free pass to the Sports Core, where there’s an indoor pool. For a fee, you can participate in a slew of activities, from horseback riding to tennis. There’s also a camp every Saturday from noon-4 p.m. for kids aged 4-12, which provides professional childcare while you spend the day at the spa or golf course.
3. The American Club is a tucked-away resort, so you won’t find the tech perks here that you might at larger, more urban hotels. The rooms do not include DVD players (although they can be borrowed from the front desk) and iPads and e-readers are not available for loan. We recommend fully enjoying the countryside setting by leaving your gadgets behind but if you really can’t live without them, considered yourself notified. There is Wi-Fi so it’s not that tucked away.
4. The resort is about a two-and-a-half hour drive from Chicago and a one-hour drive from Milwaukee. And while you’ll find lots to do and plenty of variety in terms of restaurants, it’s more of a long weekend getaway than an extended vacation.
5. The American Club used to be the Kohler workers’ dorm and, today, it’s on the National Register of Historic Places. It’s kept up to date but its village charm is part of its appeal. Most guest rooms have a traditional décor that incorporates furniture and tile work from sister-companies Baker and Ann Sacks, respectively. Bathrooms obviously have all the latest but the overall vibe is old-world and relaxed. -
The American Club manages to maintain its historic beauty and authenticity without sacrificing comfort, convenience or luxury. Here are the five words we’d use to describe the design style of the Forbes Travel Guide Five-Star hotel:
1. Historic. The walls of The American Club are covered with an impressive collection of black-and-white photos and naturalization papers that illustrate the resort’s storied history. Furthermore, the exterior of the building conveys distinct aspects of the Tudor Revival architecture with its steeply pitched roofs and dormered windows. The Wisconsin Room pays tribute to the 30th state in the union with drawings of distinguished Wisconsinites, along with two stunning tapestries from the 1940s, one of which depicts a map of the state with its many native inhabitants and wildlife. On a whole, The American Club is a testament to the Kohler-family legacy as one of Wisconsin’s most recognized manufacturing companies. But more than just a showcase of plumbing genius, the resort tells an American story and is a true Wisconsin institution.
2. Authentic. The American Club’s style and décor remain true to its roots. Original china from the old dining room is on display, along with the old lattice elevator doors from the Wisconsin capitol building during Walter J. Kohler Sr.’s term as governor.
3. Inviting. Stained glasswork, oak wainscoting, touches of brass and ornate wall sconces make The American Club a place that bids guests to settle in.
4. Tranquil. Between the village of Kohler’s removed proximity from the big city, its lush natural environment, and The American Club’s peaceful milieu and tricked-out Kohler fixtures (read: amazing tubs and showers), the hotel imparts a deep sense of solace. Whether you’re here to indulge in spa treatments or hit the links—or both—relaxation and serenity are always close at hand.
5. Cozy. Interiors feature elegant furnishings by Baker and McGuire, interesting artwork of historical figures, rich tapestries and the like, while the grounds are adorned with beautiful gardens. Pretty much everything you need is just steps away and when it’s not, there’s a free shuttle to take you to a variety of restaurants and activities. When you’re tucked away inside this little hamlet, the rest of the world is a million miles away.

As a luxury resort known for outstanding service, the Forbes Travel Guide Five-Star American Club can provide just about any amenity you may have left behind, but there are a few things we recommend packing:
1. Your laptop. The American Club is designed to provide a relaxing getaway, so it’s no wonder they don’t offer much in terms of tech support. But for those who absolutely must stay connected, the resort’s small lower-level business center probably won’t suffice — it features just two computers and one printer to serve guests from all of the resort’s 240 rooms. Rooms also are not equipped with DVD players, although the TVs are set up so that you can display movies, videos or anything else from your laptop onto the screen.
2. Kids games, books and DVDs. The American Club recently launched a kids’ program with toys, activities and more, but you might want to pack a few things to keep them occupied when you’re in your room.
3. Golf clubs. Blackwolf Run and Whistling Straits are some of the most beautiful golf courses in the country, but they don’t come cheap. With green fees costing between $180 and $350, bringing your own equipment will at least spare you the $85 club rental fee.
4. A swimsuit. Free passes to the Sports Core health club are included with your stay at The American Club, which means you have access to two swimming pools, a man-made beach and an outdoor whirlpool. The Forbes Travel Guide Five-Star Kohler Waters Spa also features a relaxation pool, along with several whirlpools, a sauna and steam room. On top of that, Lake Michigan beaches are less than five miles away.
5. Workout gear. Your free pass to Sports Core means you can pop in at any time (or at least from 5:30 a.m. to 10:30 p.m.) for a game of indoor tennis, racquetball or a workout it the gym. -
The best time of the year to visit The American Club is May to October, when you can make the most of the area’s great outdoor offerings. Golfers tend to descend on the Forbes Travel Guide Five-Star hotel between May and October to experience the resort’s renowned courses — Blackwolf Run and Whistling Straits. The warm summer months are also the best time for biking the Old Plank Road Trail, or swimming and paddleboarding at Sheboygan’s beautiful Deland Park Beach. With the lakefront’s soft sands and crystal waters, Midwest freshwater surfers have affectionately come to know it as the “Malibu of the Midwest.” Conversely, the holiday season between November and the new year tend to draw record crowds, and we also love this time of year for a visit. The village setting is picture perfect, especially if it’s snowing outside. Imagine being nestled inside, wrapped in your spa robe and relaxing by the fireplace. Everything you need is right on site: a heavenly spa, a wonderful restaurant and a cozy bar with an excellent wine list.

The luxury, amenity-packed American Club offers plenty of things to do, both onsite and within a few miles of the Forbes Travel Guide Five-Star resort. Here’s a list of the five best things to do during a visit:
1. Golf. Part of The American Club resort, the scenic, lake-hugging, Pete Dye-designed Whistling Straits Golf Course once hosted the PGA Championship. It’s one of the region’s biggest draws.
2. Spa. The Forbes Travel Guide Five-Star Kohler Waters Spa, located inside the Carriage House at The American Club, is known for its innovative, therapeutic water treatments and other rejuvenating services. The soothing water-centric retreat features amazing wet areas.
3. Bike. Kids get free bike rentals with their Kohler Kidz packages. So if you’ve got the family in tow, order a box lunch from The American Club concierge, and then start exploring the 17-mile, paved Old Plank Road Recreation Trail, which runs to Lake Michigan and beyond.
4. Get some history. We recommend a visit to the Kohler Design Center to learn about the history of Kohler. The “toilet museum” is more than just a place to look at the latest showers and tubs. Factory tours tell an interesting story of an innovative company (that built a village!) and offer a glimpse of early American life.
5. Enjoy nature. River Wildlife, The American Club Resort’s private dining and hunting club, offers canoeing, fishing, shooting and hunting. Guest passes can be purchased through the concierge.
-
The Forbes Travel Guide Five-Star American Club is a golfer’s paradise, with three top courses. Each of them is less than 15 minutes away and easily accessible by the resort’s free shuttle service. Whistling Straits Golf Course, the resort’s premier course, is made up of two different courses — the Irish and the Straits, with the Straits being the most scenic and sought-after. As the jewel in the resort’s golf crown, the Lake Michigan shore-hugging course won scores of new national fans after hosting the 2010 PGA Tournament. Running alongside the Straits is the Alice and Pete Dye-designed grass-and-dune Irish course, which, with its rolling hills and lake views, is also quite pretty. Meanwhile, Blackwolf Run, also designed by Pete Dye, is located in a lush river basin and surrounded by forestry.
-
Every guest room in The American Club's main building is dedicated to a person from the history of the United States. The artwork in the guest room honors that American. The artwork in the bathroom is a reproduction of an original Kohler plumbing advertisement. Kohler plumbing was the first company to send ads directly to the consumer.
-
You won’t need a car, a cab or even a limo during your stay at The American Club, thanks to the resort’s free shuttle service.
-
The American Club design style is a rich mélange of late 19th and early 20th century European and American Tudor revival, with arts and crafts era décor complemented by the contemporary chic aesthetic of the Kohler brand family. -
Yes. There is a pool at our health club, the Sports Core, which is just a couple-minute complimentary shuttle ride from the hotel.
-
Fun activities for kids are in somewhat short supply on The American Club hotel’s immediate grounds, but if you’re willing to explore the possibilities across the resort, some interesting sports and rec options will certainly present themselves. You should check with the front desk at the Four-Star hotel about rentals or to arrange outings for snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, ice-skating, biking or sledding. The Kohler Sports Core Health Club, about a half a mile away, offers year-round fun, with an indoor family pool and tennis courts, plus a manmade beach for the warmer months. At the resort’s River Wildlife private reserve, the range of outdoor activities includes canoeing along the Sheboygan River and, for kids 12 and up, horseback riding. For girls ages 8 to 15, the Kohler Waters Spa offers a special Mom and Me Nails package. Babysitting is also available, if you’ve brought the kids along and just need to get away for an intimate dinner or spa treatment during your stay at The American Club.
-
Both The American Club and Kohler Sports Core and Health Club offer babysitting services. For The American Club, a concierge will arrange to have a babysitter from the hotel’s list of approved childcare contacts come to your room to mind children of any age. The sitters, who are almost all CPR-trained, are independent contractors who will expect their fees - $12 per hour for one child, $15 for two or three - in cash.
Babysitting services are also available during certain hours at Sports Core. The services at Kids Core, the health club’s on-site drop-off play area, are designed to allow parents to work out, visit the Kohler Waters Spa or take classes at Yoga on the Lake. Just ask the concierge at the Four-Star hotel for more information. -
The historic American Club luxury hotel does not allow pets, but the resort’s more contemporary Kohler property, Inn on Woodlake, recently became dog friendly.

You won’t need a car, a cab or even a limo during your stay at The American Club, thanks to the resort’s free shuttle service. So while you might have to drive a little out of the way to get to the resort, you can keep the car in park for the duration of your stay at the Five-Star American Club.
-
Yes. There is a pool at our health club, the Sports Core, which is just a couple-minute complimentary shuttle ride from the hotel.
-
Since the pool is within our health club, you’ll find towels, lockers, showers, a sauna, indoor and outdoor whirlpool, beach, cafe, kickboards for kids and a floating raft to swim to on the lake.
-
The American Club has complimentary valet parking. Cars are valet parked in our underground garage.
-
The American Club doesn’t offer any formal planned activities, but there is a wide range of Kohler-centric things to do. For a small fee, the Sports Core offers group fitness classes, which includes yoga on the lake in a separate lakeside studio. Sports Core also rents out tennis equipment and court time, as well as kayaks and paddleboats.
River Wildlife Sanctuary and Hunting Reserve are accessible to guests of The American Club for an additional fee. River Wildlife offers seasonal canoe rentals, horseback riding, archery, hiking, bird-watching and some of the best trout and salmon fishing in the country. Hunters can also enjoy trap shooting and pheasant hunting in an isolated, private area.
We recommend a tour of the Kohler Gardens, as well as the nearby Kohler Factory and Kohler Design Center. The gardens are lovely and the factory is more than just a place to gape at plumbing; the museum offers an interesting glimpse into the history of an American company. Between the months of January and April, Kohler also sponsors the Demonstration Kitchen series at the Shops at Woodlake, where you can interact with chefs during preparation and tasting segments.
The Forbes Travel Guide Five-Star Kohler Waters Spa offers spa usage for $30, with some restrictions during the holiday season. This fee is waved with the purchase of a spa service on weekdays, and two services on Saturdays. Overnight guests at The Carriage House receive complimentary use of the spa.
Many visitors also choose to spend their days at Whistling Straights or Blackwolf Run golf courses. In the event a hotel visit coincides with Wisconsin snow, The American Club has cross-country skis, ice skates, and sleds available for rental, while Sports Core offers snowshoes for a small fee.
Personally, our favorite planned activity is the evening wine reception in the lobby of the Carriage House. It’s a great opportunity to mingle with other guests (many of whom are still in their spa robes, so you definitely don’t need to dress up) and the huge spread includes local cheeses and tasty nibbles. The Winery Bar also offers cheese and wine tastings; the front desk should give you a schedule of events -
The American Club has a classic approach to the holidays, offering old-school events like brunch-time visits with Santa for kids, caroling, ornament decorating sessions and carriage rides through Kohler’s streets and lanes, which are beautifully illuminated with thousands of glowing white lights. We love visiting the hotel this time of year. The cozy village setting is the perfect backdrop for enjoying a simple holiday break. If you’re visiting the Forbes Travel Guide Five-Star hotel in early December or over New Year’s Eve, be sure to inquire about tickets to The American Club’s festive annual Christmas and New Year’s fetes (the latter includes a large dinner-dance). The resort also hosts the annual Wisconsin Holiday Market, featuring arts and crafts by local and national artisans, in mid-November. Holiday packages are available. If you’re visiting during the spring, the hotel offers a fantastic Easter package that includes Easter egg decorating, an egg hunt, story time, a lavish buffet and more.

The American Club offers some amenities that children (and parents) are sure to love, especially the five we’ve listed below. Note that 16-and-over policies apply at both Kohler Waters Spa and the Carriage House accommodations. However, children are welcome to stay within the main building at the Forbes Travel Guide Five-Star hotel.
1. The American Club offers the Kohler Kidz package, which starts at $404 for two adults and one child for two nights. This family-oriented package welcomes kids with a plush toy, baseball hat, select meals, treats and free bike and ice skate rentals. There’s also a camp for kids aged 4-12, which allows you to drop off the kids for the day while you relax in the spa or on the greens.
2. The Sports Core health club, about a half a mile away, let’s kids cut loose on a man-made beach, splash around in the indoor family pool or play tennis. Outdoor winter sports around the resort include snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, and ice skating and sledding at Ravine Park.
3. The Forbes Travel Guide Five-Star Kohler Waters Spa offers a special Mom and Me nail deal that includes a $25 manicure or pedicure for girls ages 8 to 15 when Mom schedules the same treatment at the same time. Girls are treated to a fruit smoothie while they get their nails done, plus they’ll take home a mini beauty bag and bottle of nail polish as part of the package.
4. The River Wildlife private reserve offers a wide range of outdoor fun for kids, including canoeing along the Sheboygan River and, for kids 12 and up, horseback riding. Families must purchase a day pass to the private wilderness reserve in order to book activities there.
5. The American Club rents out bikes, which are perfect for exploring the Old Plank Road Recreation Trail, a 17-mile paved path that runs along State Highway 23 — all the way from the Lake Michigan shoreline to the charming hamlet of Greenbush. Helmets, maps and box lunches are available for this family-friendly adventure.
-
No matter the size of your wedding, The American Club has several locations that will suit your big day. The Courtyard Gardens feature gazebo and fountain areas, and can accommodate anywhere from 30 to 250 guests in the warmer months. The Great Lakes Ballroom is the largest reception area available at the Forbes Travel Guide Five-Star hotel — it has seating for up to 500, along with crystal chandeliers, mahogany woodwork and cathedral ceilings that add elegant touches to the occasion. The Great Bay Ballroom has similar classic elements and holds 50 to 120 guests, while the Bay de Noc is more appropriate for a smaller event of 25 to 50 guests. Intimate receptions for less than 24 people can be booked in the Founder’s Room, which has a sitting room and fireplace, as well as a private dining room and courtyard terrace.
-
The Forbes Travel Guide Five-Star American Club offers three wedding packages at $110, $124 and $170 per plate. The minor variations in pricing are primarily due to the length of the hosted deluxe bar service (you can choose from one-, two- or four-hour increments). The highest tier service also includes an artisan cheese display during the cocktail reception, as well as a four-course dinner that includes two entrée options. The two higher-level packages include a selection of four butler-passed hors d’oeuvres, a sparkling wine toast and wine service with dinner, a specially designed American Club wedding cake and chair covers. The two lower-priced packages provide soup or salad with dinner and one entrée option; the least expensive service simply omits the sparkling wine toast.

While the historic American Club luxury Forbes Travel Guide Five-Star hotel does not allow pets, the resort’s sister property, Inn on Woodlake, does. There, you’ll find pooch-friendly amenities like walking trails, food and water bowls, and treats in each room. The hotel currently has five rooms designated for canines, so reservations must be made well in advance to ensure you can snag one. For each stay, a $75 dog surcharge will be added to your bill, and certain restrictions apply. For example, dogs must be under 70 pounds, fully vaccinated, crated when they’re in the room alone, and kept out of the inn’s public areas. Also, only two dogs are allowed per room. Once you get settled, explore the nearby walking trails — the Inn on Woodlake provides a map of recommended paths, as well as a list of local pet supply shops, dog walking services and veterinarians.

Inside the mini-bar at the Forbes Travel Guide Five-Star American Club you’ll find a whole assortment of beverages. Crack open a beer — Heineken, Miller Lite and local-favorite Spotted Cow are all on hand — or try the pinot noir or chardonnay. If you’re looking for a stiffer drink, you’ve got plenty of options: Absolut Vodka, Jack Daniel’s, Bacardi, Ketel One, Bruichladdich Islay Single Malt Scotch Whisky and Tanqueray. Pepsi, Diet Pepsi, Sierra Mist, unsweetened ice tea, cranberry juice and orange juice are all available, too, for mixing or drinking straight. You’ll also find bottled waters, and just beside the mini-bar, an honor basket filled with snacks like pretzel bites, caramel almond popcorn, cinnamon spiced pecans, honey roasted peanuts, and a couple different chocolates and candies. Lastly, Tylenol and Advil are available to help ease any aches, pains or rough mornings.

The number and caliber of amenities in each room at the Forbes Travel Guide Five-Star American Club vary based on what type of room you book. Even the standard rooms are equipped with furnishings from Baker or McGuire, a refreshment center and a Kohler bathroom with a high-tech shower. With each progressing price point, finishing touches like fabric embellishments, plumbing fixtures and Ann Sacks tile work are elevated. Bathrooms in the deluxe, superior and heritage rooms include whirlpool tubs, and many also offer a separate double shower. Every room contains a little bit of nature with a live Canadian hemlock, which was grown specifically for The American Club. Additionally, some rooms feature fireplaces and courtyard views.
-
We set the room mood for a peaceful night’s sleep with refreshing towels and amenities. There’s also a personalization of guest items, the garbage is removed, the ice bucket filled, the remote and TV guide is placed on the end of the bed on a tray, and slippers are placed on turn-down mat and we provide house-made cookies for sweet dreams. A Kohler Water Spa CD plays on the guest room TV with resort videos, and the beds are turned down.

The American Club has 185 guestrooms and 11 suites, although some rooms will be temporarily unavailable during early 2012 due to the ongoing four-phase renovation project. Just across the street from The American Club, there are 55 rooms at the Carriage House located in the Kohler Waters Spa building.
Traditional guestrooms vary from standard double and king accommodations to the higher echelon Deluxe, Superior and Heritage rooms. Roomier and more luxurious options at the Five-Star hotel include the Governor and Presidential suites. The uniquely romantic Eau de Vie suite was newly opened in the spring of 2011, and it can be reserved in combination with the Governor’s Suite, which is located one floor below. The American Club’s sister property, the Inn on Woodlake, has 121 rooms and is just a five-minute drive away; though, we highly recommend a stay at the main property for all the luxury and convenience it offers. -
The American Club has LG flat-screen TVs in each guestroom and suite; as part of the ongoing renovation project, connectivity panels are being installed to allow you projection capabilities from your laptop, iPad and iPod to the television screen. Media technology and wet bars have been centralized and installed into traditional wooden armoires with hinged doors that can transform rooms into technology-free zones for optimum relaxation.
The exclusive spa-centric Eau de Vie suite at the Five-Star hotel has a larger flat-screen TV, which functions as a distinct and intuitive DTV II digital interface to control the room’s digital hydrotherapy system and custom-tailored shower experience. You might not expect such high-tech gadgets in a rustic location like Kohler, Wisconsin, but exceeding expectations is what The American Club is all about. -
Our connectivity panel allows a guest to connect their iPod, iPad, Mp3 player or laptop and play it through the TV and charge items.
-
The American Club’s Suites are extremely well-appointed, ranging from 492 square feet to the ultimate Eau de Vie Suite’s 782 square feet. The rooms are also outfitted with multiple televisions, separate seating areas and king-sized beds. Other perks include a refreshment center and wet bar. As expected in The American Club, Kohler sister companies Baker and McGuire provide the furniture, while Kohler provides the inviting whirlpool tubs. Many of the suites also feature fireplaces, perfect for warming up after winter sports, as well as separate double showers. -
Every tier of room at The American Club offers cut-above bedding. From the lowest price point up, guests are treated to goose-down pillows and comforters, and Simmons Felicity mattresses with pocketed coils that eliminate movement by conforming to the body. Sheets, pillowcases and duvet covers are made by Frette, and they feature sateen 310-thread-count jacquard woven fabric manufactured from Italian-milled 100 percent Egyptian combed cotton fibers. The beds themselves are designed by Baker or McGuire. Standard rooms feature one king- or two double-sized beds. Deluxe, Superior and Heritage rooms house one king- or two queen-sized beds. Suites have one king-sized bed.

The guest rooms at the Forbes Travel Guide Five-Star American Club vary based on the type of room you book. However, even the standard room provides a luxurious experience with furnishings from Baker or McGuire, a refreshment center and showy Kohler bathrooms. With each progressing price point, finishing touches like fabric embellishments, plumbing fixtures and Ann Sacks tile work are elevated. The deluxe, superior and heritage bathrooms include whirlpool tubs, and many also offer a separate double shower. There are 86 standard and 67 deluxe quarters, and every room possesses its own unique décor, providing guests a new and different experience during every return visit to the hotel. Deluxe, superior and heritage rooms offer space varying between 333 and 542 square feet, and include cozy seating areas for unwinding at the end of the day. Every room contains a touch of nature with a live Canadian hemlock that was grown specifically for The American Club. Every guest room in the main building is also dedicated to a historical figure, with artwork to honor that person.

The bathrooms at The American Club are unparalleled — even by the standards of luxury hotels around the world. The Forbes Travel Guide Five-Star hotel’s place under the Kohler umbrella has given it a hefty advantage in providing guests with some of the most stylish and innovative fixtures on the market. Expect Ann Sacks tile work along with Kohler whirlpool tubs and toilets. Deluxe rooms and above have “performance showering,” which features two square shower panels above and two along the wall for the added feel of a soothing massage. These same rooms also have Kohler whirlpool tubs and many come with separate double showers. For the rare chance at a top-tier Kohler bathing experience, the superior rooms have a “tea for two” spa whirlpool with chromatherapy lights, while the Heritage category has a waterscape whirlpool with 10 body-massage jets.
-
We think the best rooms to stay in at the Forbes Travel Guide Five-Star American Club are the spacious suites, which come with Kohler whirlpools and top-of-the-line bathroom designs. The rooms in the Carriage House in the Kohler Waters Spa building are also attractive and include free continental breakfast, afternoon tea and evening wine and appetizers. Additionally, Carriage House guests are given complimentary access to the spa. We’re especially drawn to the Carriage House’s Asian-designed Immersion Suites, which include a Kohler whirlpool tub in the center of the room. If money is no object, the 782-square-foot Eau de Vie Suite, accessible by private elevator, is unbeatable. Here’s why: A Kohler DTV Custom Showering Experience, a Kohler sõk overflowing bath with chromatherapy lights, a four-paneled glass fireplace, an oversized bedroom and bath with two powder rooms, and a wet bar fill the 782-square-foot space.

Views are not a marketed feature of the Forbes Travel Guide Five-Star American Club, but since its grounds are considered a botanical garden, all rooms overlook either lush interior courtyards or the tree-lined, natural exterior. Guests can gaze into one of four different courtyard areas. The Gazebo Courtyard has a small rotunda encircled by annual beds and café tables; The Fountain Courtyard is decorated with the “Scarf Dancer” statue that stands amid annuals and perennials; The Lantern Courtyard offers the privacy of Scotch pines for adjacent guest rooms; and The Prairie Woodland area contains native plants of the Midwest alongside a stream. Guests can ask the staff at the front desk for a museum-style info wand, which will give you detailed facts about the Kohler Gardens.

Multi-room parties looking to stay connected at The American Club, a Forbes Travel Guide Five-Star hotel, can opt for either the Heritage rooms or the presidential suites, which both feature connected rooms. The Heritage rooms range from 448 to 542 square feet and include either one king or two queen beds, a refreshment station with wet bar, a seating area, Baker and McGuire furnishings and a Kohler whirlpool bath. For even more space, large parties might consider a presidential suite, the hotel’s high-end, one-bedroom suites that include a separate living room and dining area, a powder room, a Kohler whirlpool bath, a fireplace and refreshment center with wet bar. These suites range offer 1,320 to 1,429 square feet.

The American Club is outfitted with no fewer than five restaurants on property.

Nightlife in the town of Kohler can be a bit sleepy, but fortunately, you have three in-house bars to choose from at the American Club. On the finer side is the Winery Bar, a Euro-style wine cellar with a mind-boggling wine list and impressive cheese flight selections. The dignified Library Bar transforms the hotel’s library lounge into a full-service bar with martinis, signature drinks and appetizers, all served to the tune of live piano music on Fridays and Saturdays. Lastly, the Horse and Plow, which originally served as the tap room for Kohler company workers, features over 100 bottled beers and 12 craft beers on tap, including Jigger ale, a brew exclusive to The American Club.
-
Only available Sundays, the brunch at the American Club’s Wisconsin Room is worth planning your weekend around. Offerings span from savory to sweet, with fresh house-made pastries, including the Wisconsin specialty fruit kringle; smoked salmon; poached eggs Benedict; and a crème brûlée French toast — just to name a few. A chef’s carving station and omelet station make this a feast to remember. The Wisconsin Room is also open for breakfast daily. Meanwhile, if you’re a guest of the Carriage House, you’ll receive a complimentary continental breakfast. Breakfast is often called the most important meal of the day — and even if you sleep in late on Sundays, you’ll still be able to get the all-important food you crave at The American Club.
-
The Forbes Travel Guide Five-Star American Club has two bars — the Winery Bar and the Horse and Plow — with two very different personalities and entertainment. The more formal and refined Winery Bar has a cosmopolitan feel and features live classical music on weekends, when talented high school students tickle the ivories with pieces by artists like Mozart and Brahms. Then, on the other side of The American Club, you have the Horse and Plow, a jovial spot that pours cool, frothy pints. About once a month, local bands complement the Horse and Plow’s well-curated beer list and refined pub fare with an extra serving of rock music.
