The Jefferson is a marvel to behold, from the stained glass dome in the lobby to the magnificently decorated columns in the Rotunda, but it’s also a marvelous place to stay. Many services that would incur charges are complimentary at this Five-Star property. Here are our five favorite amenities at this Richmond gem:
1. Use the free Wi-Fi. While many upscale hotels charge as much as $20 to get online, you can log on wirelessly without an extra fee at The Jefferson Hotel.
2. Work it out at the hotel's complimentary fitness center and pool. You can still get your workout in even while on vacation at The Jefferson Hotel. The onsite fitness center offers cardio and weight-training equipment along with free weights and a beautiful indoor pool and sun deck.
3. We love the Molton Brown bath products. The shampoo, conditioner, lotion, and other products are luxurious and big enough for multiple guests to use for more than one day.
4. The hotel offers impeccable service, including 24-hour in-room dining. If you forgot something or need help while on your trip to Richmond, the staff at The Jefferson Hotel can and will help.
5. If you need a quick trim or to grab a souvenir for a loved one back home, you’ll love — as we do — the hotel’s on-site salon and gift shop.

The Jefferson has two restaurants. TJ’s, the casual dining spot, is located just off the main Rotunda. TJ’s is the hotel’s primary venue for weekday breakfasts and for lunch and is decorated in a clubby, Old World feel. The restaurant is located in the hotel’s original reception area and was once a place where gentlemen would gather over port and cigars - today, the dark woods and maroons and greens of the bar area reflect this. The main dining area at TJ’s has bright windows and old-fashioned curio cabinets for storing linens and the restaurant’s wine supply. Tables are dressed simply in white tablecloths, and the welcoming space is ideal for a casual weekday breakfast, served from 6:30 to 10 a.m. on weekdays, and starting at 7 a.m. on weekends.
At lunch and dinner, guests may bring a bottle of unopened wine to the restaurant, but there’s a $35 corking fee - unless it’s a special bottle, order from the bar’s extensive list of wines, beers, and specialty cocktails.
Enjoy a wine event at the Jefferson’s fine dining restaurant, Lemaire. Chef Walter Bundy is a Richmond native, and serves contemporary American cuisine with a Southern flair and the best of Virginia ingredients. Housed in what would have been the lady’s salons, these rooms are decorated in an ornate, almost Victorian vibe, a series of private dining rooms connected to form a single restaurant. The main dining salon has high ceilings, a massive fireplace, and well-spaced tables to allow for a fine dining experience that’s as relaxed as it is elegant.

The menus change seasonally at the Jefferson, and everything we’ve sampled from both of the hotel’s restaurants has been delicious. The menus are reflective of the best local and seasonal produce, meats and materials available, so many dishes are not always on offer. On our recent visit, we loved the fried green tomatoes, the Berkshire pork chop, the peanut butter cheesecake, the impeccable wine selection (most bottles are under $40) and the Eggs Jefferson, the house version of eggs Benedict with lump crabmeat.
In addition, don’t miss afternoon tea at the Jefferson. Tea is served Friday through Sunday between 3 and 4:15 p.m., with special seatings during the holiday season.

Many suites at the Jefferson feature beautiful marble fireplace mantels - many of them historic to the hotel’s original design in the 19th century. But if you’re looking for a roaring fire, the fireplaces are only ornamental.
If the fireplace option still intrigues you, there are five types of suites available at the Jefferson. The grandest is the Presidential Suite, which offers more than 1,400 feet of space for guests, including four separate rooms. It includes a parlor with a baby grand piano and French doors that open to a marble balcony overlooking historic Franklin Street. If four rooms, three fireplaces and dining seating for eight isn’t enough space, the suite can be connected to a room with two double beds to expand.
The smaller, but still luxurious Governor’s Suite is 800 square feet and includes dining space for six. Executive suites are smaller still, and include a spacious parlor. The Living Room Suite is a romantic option, with a dining area for two. And the smallest suite - The Studio Suite - offers a full wet bar and seating area, and may include a fold-out sleeper sofa upon request.

The Jefferson Hotel features its original Beaux-Arts interior décor despite it being destroyed by a fire in the early 20th century. The building was painstakingly reconstructed with notable features including an impressive stained-glass dome in the lobby and magnificently decorated columns in the Rotunda. In case you didn’t have reason enough to stop and gape, it’s rumored that the Forbes Travel Guide Five-Star hotel’s grand staircase served as the model for Gone with the Wind. ?

The Jefferson hotel is the place to stay if you’re looking for a Five-Star experience in Richmond. There’s much to love about the historic hotel, but here are our five favorites:
1. Historic touches. The hotel’s rich history and opulent décor, including the stained glass dome in the lobby and the historic details, including fireplaces and rich plaster work in many of the guestrooms are a highlight.
2. The food! The excellent restaurants, TJ’s and Lemaire, draw locals as well as guests, and the afternoon high tea and Sunday brunch in the Rotunda are equally popular.
3. Enjoy history without leaving the hotel. A favorite part of the hotel is the on-site museum, which showcases photos, press mentions, and historical artifacts from the hotel.
4. Crocodiles. The hotel has crocodile motif throughout its decor, a nod to the crocodiles that once lived in the Palm Court’s fountain.
5. Exceptional service. The exceptional service is also a plus - many of the staff have been with the hotel since its re-opening in 1986.

For a city hotel, the rooms at the Jefferson are quite spacious. Like the rest of the hotel, the décor is very traditional and historic, with blue, pink and green accents, heavy draperies, antique furniture, and comfortable chaises or settees for relaxing with a book or while you watch TV. A separate work desk features handy plugs and a comfortable chair. The beds are custom-made for the hotel, fitted with crisp white sheets and dark wood headboards, and the bathrooms are spacious and boast Molton Brown amenities. Most bathrooms have a tub/shower combo, though some have recently been re-done to feature just a standing shower.
Guestrooms are of two types, deluxe and superior. Deluxe rooms are the largest available guestrooms, and can include one king, one queen, or two double beds. Superior rooms are slightly smaller but still spacious, and may include one queen or two double beds.

The most important thing to know about the Jefferson Hotel is that if you’re looking for a Five-Star, historic experience in Richmond, you’ve found it. Here are four more essential bits of knowledge about this Five-Star property:
1. The décor is traditional. The Jefferson is one of Richmond’s most historic hotels and dates to 1895. In keeping with this rich history, the hotel is filled with traditional touches, including an impressive stained glass dome in the lobby and magnificently decorated columns in the Rotunda. It’s rumored that the staircase in the grand Rotunda was the model for the staircase in Gone with the Wind.
2. The Gone with the Wind author supposedly spent the night. Though the general manager assures us that Margaret Mitchell did stay at the property, this cannot be confirmed. But we love the idea that Mitchell dreamt up her famous tale of Scarlett and Rhett here.
3. The Jefferson is not the kid-friendliest hotel in Richmond. Though children are certainly welcome at the Five-Star hotel, there are not many activities specifically catered to kids.
4. You won’t need to leave to find a great eat. The restaurants at the Jefferson are excellent - locals and guests alike flock to the hotel for afternoon tea and the grand brunch in the Rotunda on Sundays. Be sure to make a reservation at Lemaire, the in-house restaurant boasting a chef who trained at The French Laundry, and enjoy their nightly happy hour specials.
5. The service at the hotel is exceptional. If you forgot something or need help while on your trip to Richmond, the staff at the Jefferson can and will help.

The Jefferson Hotel offers complimentary house car service to all guests. The car is available for transport throughout downtown Richmond until 10:45 p.m. nightly — it's the perfect way to leave your car in the garage as you head out for an evening of drinks and fun in the lively nightlife sectors near the hotel.
For live acts and entertainment, there is the Capital Alehouse located in Downtown Richmond, built in the 1870s. It features local bands and live music nightly, offering everything from country to bluegrass, jazz and salsa. Although many acts travel to perform at the Capital Alehouse, this Richmond gem tries to showcase local area talents. Martini Kitchen and Bubble Bar also offer a hopping bar atmosphere in addition to occasional live musical performances. We also suggest hopping through the River District — not only is there a beautiful view of the James River, but also a large stretch of bars perfect for finding the best spot to end the night. Younger night-goers will love "The Fan," an area full of trendy bars. Although Carytown is best known for shopping, this area has many great restaurants as well.

Tastefully decorated marble and tile bathrooms at the Jefferson feature a separate soaking tub (some are Jacuzzis) and a shower with excellent water pressure. The Jefferson may be a historic hotel, but its bathrooms feature one important modern touch: They’re spacious. Many feature a second flat-screen television attached to the bathroom mirror. Bathrooms don’t offer any high-tech amenities, but offer good light and thoughtful touches like lighted makeup mirrors and several hooks for robes and towels. Standard rooms feature a single sink, but suites offer dual sinks. A separate door can separate the toilet from the rest of the bathroom, allowing a modicum of privacy, and there is a telephone in the toilet area. Nightlife around the Jefferson Hotel is generally a short drive away - use the hotel’s complimentary car service to get around Richmond. We also suggest hopping through the River District - not only is there a beautiful view of the James River, but also a large stretch of bars perfect for finding the best spot to end the night. Younger night-goers will love “The Fan,” an area full of trendy bars. Although Carytown is best known for shopping, this area has many great restaurants as well.

The Jefferson overlooks the historic streets of Richmond. Start in Historic Downtown and venture through American landmarks like Edgar Allen Poe’s house and then visit the American Civil War Center and Richmond National Battlefield Park. If the weather allows, travel to Maymont Park, an estate donated to the city that has since been turned into an urban park featuring fountains, gardens and exhibits of Virginian wildlife. Another must-see on a nice day is the Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden; if time allows, take one of the classes on gardening, but do not leave without visiting the glass conservatory. To embrace more of the city’s history, stop by the Museum of the Confederacy and take a tour of the White House of the Confederacy, the restored headquarters of Jefferson Davis during the Civil War. To conclude a trip, take a few hours to view the final resting places of Presidents Tyler and Monroe at the Hollywood Cemetery.

There are many great things to do near the Jefferson. Thankfully, Richmond is small enough to enjoy most anything within a short drive. Our favorites:
1. Maymont Park: Donated by a wealthy landowner, this park is not only free but features a traditional Japanese tea garden, fountains and even exhibits of native wildlife.
2. Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden: Open year-round, this garden showcases over a dozen different themed gardens, including a Victorian Garden and a Healing Garden. There are frequently gardening classes offered as well. Be sure to check out the glass conservatory, the only of its kind in the mid-Atlantic.
3. The Museum of the Confederacy: This museum contains the largest record of Confederacy artifacts and even has guided tours of the White House of the Confederacy, the restored headquarters of Jefferson Davis during the Civil War.
4. Hollywood Cemetery: Located atop a bluff overlooking the James River, this cemetery features the final resting places of former Confederate Generals, local authors and former Presidents Tyler and Monroe.
5. The James River: Running through Richmond, the lower section of the James River features rapids sure to thrill any visitor. The river winds around downtown and passes through two local parks, perfect for a mid-day picnic and leisurely stroll.

The Jefferson has two restaurants, both of which include bar space for meeting and mingling.
Six rooms at the Jefferson offer terraces - two are suites.
The smaller, but still luxurious Governor’s Suite is 800 square feet and includes access to an adjacent terrace overlooking Franklin.
In addition to these suites, there are four “balcony” rooms available at the property.

The Jefferson is one of those hotels that can provide or already offers most of the amenities you’ll need for your stay, but pack these five essentials to get the most from your Five-Star experience:
1. A dressy outfit. It’s not overbearing, but you’ll want to look sharp when you step into Lemaire, the hotel restaurant featuring the best in Virginia ingredients. Enjoy fresh, New American cuisine crafted by Chef Walter Bundy, who trained at the French Laundry in California.
2. Driving gloves. The Jefferson offers a complimentary car service to guests, but it also offers free valet parking. Take advantage and wheel around historic Richmond in your own set of wheels.
3. Cash. The service at The Jefferson is excellent … so much so that you’ll want to tip at every opportunity.
4. Your swimsuit. Whether you want to swim or sit poolside in the sunshine or beneath the stars, the pool at the Jefferson is a must-visit for Richmond travelers. The Jefferson has an indoor pool on the hotel’s second level, complete with complimentary towels. The pool deck is lined by palm trees and wicker furniture, and allows for swimming or poolside seating. For sunbathers, the Jefferson also offers a small, private outdoor sundeck.

The Jefferson stands out among Four- and Five-Star hotels in Richmond as one of the city’s premier business properties. Just minutes from Virginia Commonwealth University, the University of Richmond, downtown business districts and major attractions like Carytown and the Virginia Museum of Fine Art, the hotel has been the go-to for elite visitors to the city since its opening in 1895. Offering two full-service restaurants, Lemaire and TJ’s, an oft-awarded high tea and a lavish Sunday brunch, the food is only one reason the hotel draws repeat guests. The building’s historic Beaux Arts décor, including an impressive stained glass dome in the lobby and magnificently decorated columns in the Rotunda, are reason enough to stop and gape - it’s rumored that the hotel’s grand staircase served as the model for Gone with the Wind. Inside the rooms proper, you’ll find appropriately historic décor with modern touches - flat screen TVs, additional TVs in the bathrooms, Molton Brown bath amenities, plush robes and custom-made beds with luxe European cotton linens. Additionally, this Five-Star hotel receives exceptionally high marks for its service, which we found among the friendliest in Richmond.
-
The Jefferson is a marvel to behold, from the stained glass dome in the lobby to the magnificently decorated columns in the Rotunda, but it’s also a marvelous place to stay.
The Jefferson Hotel offers complimentary house car service to all guests.

The Jefferson is an exceptionally romantic hotel, particularly because of its rich history and ornate décor. The Rotunda, one of the hotel’s larger spaces, is surprisingly romantic, and we have heard tales of many a proposal happening near the gilded columns or on the famed staircase. The conservatory in Lemaire, the hotel’s fine dining restaurant, is also a very popular area. If cost is no object, choose the Presidential Suite, featuring a piano, private dining room and marble terrace overlooking historic Franklin Street. For a more affordable, romantic suite option, choose a Living Room Suite, which includes a dining area for two.

The Jefferson Hotel stands out among other hotels in Richmond, Va., as one of the city’s premier business hotels. Just minutes from Virginia Commonwealth University, the University of Richmond, downtown business districts and major attractions like Carytown and the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, the hotel has been the go-to for elite visitors to the city since its opening in 1895. Offering two full-service restaurants, Lemaire and TJ’s, an oft-awarded high tea and a lavish Sunday brunch, the food is only one reason why the hotel draws return guests. The building’s historic Beaux- Arts décor, including an impressive stained-glass dome in the lobby and magnificently decorated columns in the Rotunda, are reason enough to stop and gape (it’s rumored that the hotel’s grand staircase served as the model for Gone with the Wind). Inside the guest rooms proper, you’ll find appropriately historic décor with modern touches like flat-screen TVs, additional TVs in the bathrooms, Molton Brown bath amenities, plush robes and custom-made beds with luxe European cotton linens. Additionally, this Forbes Travel Guide Five-Star hotel receives exceptionally high marks for its service, which we found to be some of the friendliest in Richmond.

The Jefferson Hotel is a marvel to behold, from the stained-glass dome in the lobby to the magnificently decorated columns in the Rotunda, but it’s also a marvelous place to stay. Many services that would incur charges are complimentary at this Forbes Travel Guide Five-Star hotel. Here are our five favorite amenities at this Richmond, Va., gem:
1. Complimentary Wi-Fi access. While many upscale hotels charge as much as $20 to get online, you can log on wirelessly for free at The Jefferson.

3. Molton Brown bath amenities. We love these. The shampoo, conditioner, lotion and other products are luxurious and big enough for multiple guests to use for more than one day.
4. 24-hour room service. The hotel offers impeccable service, including its 24-hour in-room dining. If you forgot something or need help during your trip to Richmond, the staff at The Jefferson is happy to help. 5. The onsite salon. If you need a quick trim or blowout before a night out, head to the hotel’s onsite salon and get pampered. -
The Jefferson Hotel features its original Beaux-Arts interior décor despite it being destroyed by a fire in the early 20th century. ?

Dining at The Jefferson is a Richmond tradition and there are several signature dishes The Jefferson has become known for.
Jefferson Spoonbread is a traditional Southern dish made of cornmeal and baked into creamy pudding-like bread. Spoonbread is served at each Sunday Champagne Brunch and in Lemaire and TJ’s seasonally.
The Jefferson’s famous peanut soup is a rich and creamy tribute to one of Virginia’s oldest crops. Blended until silky smooth and served warm, this soup is offered daily in TJ’s for lunch.
No visit to Virginia is complete without a crab cake. Both Lemaire and TJ’s offer their own signature cakes but both are pure lump crab meat that brings the Chesapeake Bay right to Richmond.
A highlight of the summer menu in Lemaire each year is Chef Bundy’s fried green tomatoes. You may have had these before but never quite like the crispy, tender version you’ll find at The Jefferson. (The Lemaire Barnyard Burger with its signature foie gras sauce is always a highlight — no matter what time of year you visit.)
Drinks at The Jefferson are all about the freshest ingredients and the seasonal offerings. Whether you prefer a hand-crafted cocktail in Lemaire’s bar and lounge made with fresh herbs (many from the restaurant’s own urban garden) or a craft beer from a regional brewery in TJs’, the theme is purely Virginia. -
The Jefferson Hotel has two restaurants, TJ’s and Lemaire. TJ’s Restaurant is a Southern bistro providing a relaxed atmosphere perfect for lunch with colleagues, clients and friends, a mid-week breakfast or a late lunch upon arrival. Whenever possible, local produce, naturally raised meats and sustainably harvested seafood are featured. Be sure not to miss Chef Schroeder’s peanut soup, a Jefferson Hotel classic.
Lemaire is a New American restaurant providing a fresh, modern culinary experience. The menu features extraordinary Virginia grown ingredients and the Southern influences of Richmond native, Chef Walter Bundy. The unique structure of the menu will allow you to customize your experience each time you visit, whether gathering with friends in the exciting new lounge for appetizers and cocktails or enjoying an evening out in the dining room. Allow your knowledgeable server to tell you all about the locally grown ingredients — especially those from Lemaire’s own urban garden — and help you with wine pairings from the diverse and extensive wine list. -
TJ’s Restaurant serves breakfast Monday through Friday and Lemaire Restaurant provides service on Saturday and Sunday. (This can sometimes change but the hotel staff will let guests know.)
TJ’s is located just off the Rotunda lobby at the bottom of the grand staircase. The sun-filled dining room is the perfect place to start the day. Be sure to ask for a table by the windows with TJ’s signature wing backed chairs and a great view of Main Street.
Breakfast at The Jefferson is always Southern inspired and offers all the breakfast classics, along with a great selection of lighter items. Room service is also available and features a great menu of healthy and traditional breakfast fare. Breakfast muffins and pastries, coffees and teas and juice are available in Gator’s Gift Shop.
If you’re staying on a Saturday evening, consider skipping breakfast on Sunday morning and heading straight to Champagne Sunday Brunch. This weekly Jefferson dining tradition is not to be missed. -
TJ’s offers several signature breakfast dishes that keep the locals and hotel guests returning again and again. Eggs Jefferson is, perhaps, the favorite signature breakfast dish, featuring two perfectly poached eggs, Virginia country ham and delicate lump crab meat topped with creamy hollandaise. (This favorite is also served each week at Champagne Sunday Brunch.)
The "Rivah" omelet is a close competitor with lump crab meat, bacon and cheddar cheese filling the light and fluffy eggs. The Southern Comfort-spiked brioche French toast is the perfect choice for those with a sweet tooth. And, no breakfast is complete without a side of TJ’s cheddar cheese grits.
Be sure to also try The Jefferson spoonbread at Sunday Champagne Brunch. -
Lemaire Restaurant at The Jefferson has quickly gained a following for several of their farm-to-table dishes. The As Southern As It Gets Berkshire Pork Chop with creamy mac-n-cheese, all day collards and Coca-Cola BBQ is a pure dedication to Chef Bundy’s Southern roots, while the Lemaire House-Ground Barnyard Burger is a tribute to the entire farm with pig bacon, sunny-side up chicken egg, farmhouse cow cheddar cheese and duck foie gras sauce. These items are both available year-round.
Seasonally, guests will also find Chef Bundy’s signature F.G.T’s (fried green tomatoes), Hanover tomato gazpacho and Chesapeake Bay soft shell crab on the menu. Menu items containing Dave and Dee’s mushrooms, from a local farm, are always a great selection and anything mentioning Bundy Farms comes straight from Lemaire’s urban garden located just across the street from the hotel. -
The best option for a family dinner at The Jefferson Hotel may be in your room: The hotel’s room service offers a special kids’ menu that features many options the little ones will love — from chicken fingers and French fries to chicken noodle soup. They’re sure to find something they like on the menu. But if you’re looking to get out, try TJ’s before 9 p.m. for a more casual dinner — the limited dinner menu should include kid-friendly favorites, including burgers. For a more refined family meal, Lemaire, the Forbes Travel Guide Five-Star hotel’s fine dining restaurant, is appropriate for an early family dinner, but you might find fewer options for your children there.
-
The children’s room service menu at The Jefferson features all the favorites — chicken tenders, grilled cheese sandwich or a hot dog served with fries, chicken noodle soup with assorted crackers, pasta with red sauce and bread and macaroni and cheese with bread.

Served in the beautiful Rotunda lobby with seating amidst the marble columns and around the Mezzanine, Sunday Champagne Brunch at The Jefferson is a culinary dream, reminiscent of a bygone era of grand buffets and lavish feasts. Music by the Skip Gailes Trio, beautiful ice carvings and genuine, friendly service make this an event to remember.
The menu includes a variety of Southern breakfast items, including made-to-order omelets and waffles, eggs Jefferson and The Jefferson’s famous spoonbread. Lunch items include seasonal salads, soup, carving stations, fresh seafood display and a selection of entrees and sides.
The Jefferson has two restaurants.

The Jefferson bar serves numerous white, red, rose and sparkling wines by the glass and bottle. The list is fairly extensive, offering about 25 wines by the glass and several hundred by the bottle selections, many of which are well priced under $40. Lemaire’s general manager Greg McGehee serves as the hotel’s wine and beverage director and is currently in the process of updating the wine list.

The bar at the Jefferson does not have a piano player or other live band, but that doesn’t mean you can’t be entertained while sipping on one of the hotel’s signature cocktails or affordable wines. The bar at TJ’s includes a “hidden” TV, perfect for watching a game or live event among friends and colleagues. If you’re hanging alone, ask the front desk for an iPad - they’re offered to guests on a first-come, first-served basis.
-
The Jefferson offers 24-hour room service, though the menu is abbreviated during off hours. A limited, yet delicious, menu is offered after 10 p.m., including favorites like “make your own” sandwiches. “Early bird” breakfasts are also available, ideal for travelers with early flights.
-
Our favorite item on any room service menu is usually the cheeseburger, but the burger on the room service menu at the Jefferson is particularly good. This burger includes optional toppings of bacon, a sunny-side up egg, farmhouse cheddar and foie gras sauce. Another favorite is the maple and sugar-brined pork chop with sides of homemade mac and cheese, braised collard greens and Coca-Cola barbecue sauce.
-
The best option for a family dinner at the Jefferson may be in your room: The hotel’s room service offers a special kid’s menu. For those looking to get out, try TJ’s before 9 p.m. for a casual dinner - the limited dinner menu should include kid-friendly favorites, including burgers.
For a more refined family meal, Lemaire, the Jefferson’s fine dining restaurant, is appropriate for an early family dinner. -
The children’s menus at the Jefferson offer a small yet mighty selection of kid-friendly favorites and is among the better kid’s menus we’ve seen. Choose from chicken nuggets, buttered popcorn, chicken noodle soup, and mac and cheese.

Cookies and milk, apple pie and cheesecake make a great bedtime snack.
A room service breakfast at The Jefferson ranges in price from $12.75-$17. Many a la carte items are also available, including delicious pancakes and the ever-popular oatmeal. The Full American breakfast is by far the most popular choice but strong consideration should be given to The Chesapeake - The Jefferson’s own version of eggs Benedict featuring delicate Virginia crab meat.
Lunch room service is available from 11 a.m. through the afternoon and offers a variety of delicious sandwiches and salads in the $8-$14 range. The burger is considered one of the best in the city though many guests opt for the crab cake sandwich made from Virginia crab — and lots of it.
Room service dinner is offered from 5 p.m.-10 p.m. with entrees ranging from $25-$35. Though the pan roasted Atlantic salmon and the grilled beef tenderloin are popular selections, be sure to ask the attendant to describe the specials that are available from the Lemaire Restaurant kitchen each evening. The Virginia peanut soup makes a perfect starter to any dinner. An entertaining and children’s menu are also available. -

One of our favorite items on any room service menu is usually the cheeseburger, but the burger at this Forbes Travel Guide Five-Star hotel is particularly good. The burger includes optional toppings of bacon, a sunny-side up egg, farmhouse cheddar and foie gras sauce. Another one of our favorites is the maple- and sugar-brined pork chop with sides of homemade mac and cheese, braised collard greens and Coca-Cola barbecue sauce. You’ll find more Southern-style influences in other dishes as well. Kids will also be happy with the menu items — with chicken fingers and chicken noodle soup, there’s sure to be something for them. Whatever you decide to order, you won’t be disappointed.

Jogging maps are available at the concierge desk and provide two scenic routes through downtown Richmond. The first is a 5-mile loop along Franklin Street to the west with a return route along historic Monument Avenue.
This is a terrific walk as well and most beautiful during the fall when the leaves are changing.
The second route is 4 miles and follows Franklin Street to the east and then to Belle Isles, which is a historic downtown park near the canals.
Both routes are simple to follow and require a minimum number of turns and streets to remember. Guests traveling with pets will also find these suitable for a run with man’s best friend.
For those guests who are less adventuresome, the health facility has many treadmills, each with its own television. -

The most important thing to know about the Jefferson Hotel is that if you’re looking for a Five-Star, historic experience in Richmond, you’ve found it.
From check-in to check-out, the personalized service at the Jefferson was the highlight of our recent stay. The concierge can provide information on local history and the history of the Jefferson, pointing guests to sightseeing destinations and museums nearby. The desk can help make travel arrangements, restaurant reservations, find show and sporting event tickets, and secure babysitting services for your room. They can make massage appointments for your room or in the two massage rooms on-site, as well as handle floral and gift deliveries. If you find yourself in need while staying at the Jefferson, the concierge can fix your problem in just about any language - or find someone who will.
-
The concierge team at the Jefferson speaks multiple international languages. For the languages the staff members do not speak, the concierge desk has a partnership with nearby Virginia Commonwealth University for translation services.
-
The Jefferson evokes images of old Richmond that meets exceptional service, and its Five-Star rating makes choosing just five words difficult. But our five favorite descriptions are as follows:
1. Historic. The Jefferson is one of Richmond’s most historic hotels and dates to 1895. It’s rumored that the staircase in the grand Rotunda was the model for the staircase in Gone With The Wind. Though the general manager assures us that Margaret Mitchell did stay at the property, this cannot be confirmed.
2. Warm and luxurious. In keeping with this rich history, the hotel is filled with warm, traditional touches, including an impressive stained glass dome in the lobby and magnificently decorated columns in the Rotunda.
3. Delicious.
4. Welcoming. The hallmark of any Ritz-Carlton hotel is service, and the Jefferson is no exception. From check-in to check-out, the personalized service at the hotel was the highlight of our recent stay. The concierge is happy to arrange everything from the delivery of flowers and clothing to planning major life events. -
The Jefferson is one of those hotels that can provide or already offers most of the amenities you’ll need for your stay, but pack these five essentials to get the most from your Five-Star experience:
5. Workout wear. The fitness center at the Jefferson is no skimpy hotel gym. The facility offers a variety of cardiovascular equipment, free weights, and strength training machines. There are also showers and separate changing areas. -
The Jefferson offers you awards that can be used across the world. The Five-Star hotel is a member of the Preferred network, offering guest recognition rewards at www.iprefer.com. The rewards can be used to book rooms at any of the hotel network’s more than 600 properties in more than 65 countries.
-
The Jefferson has not had a full room renovation since its purchase by Preferred Hotels in the late 1990s, but changes have been regularly occurring. The Five-Star hotel does not plan a shutdown renovation at any point in the future, but instead replaces goods throughout as changes become needed.
-
Richmond is a busy city at all times of the year, but the Jefferson is likely best decorated around the holiday season. If you are visiting for sightseeing reasons, late spring and early fall are still warm and temperate.
During the holiday season, book the Holidays at the Jefferson package to enjoy a room, a $50 gift card to be used anywhere at the hotel, a unique Jefferson holiday ornament and valet parking. Other packages, including tickets to holiday music shows, are also available through the hotel website.
Holiday visitors may also enjoy special holiday tea sessions: Kids can enjoy tea with Santa Claus in December (call ahead to reserve), and those with a sweet tooth will love the Chocolate Lover’s Tea, served monthly. -

The Jefferson is close to many parks in historic Richmond, and the city’s small size means those that are further are within easy driving distance.
Monroe Park is the largest area park near the Jefferson, but our favorite is Maymont Park. Donated by a wealthy landowner, this park is not only free but features a traditional Japanese tea garden, fountains and even exhibits of native wildlife.
Also be sure to visit Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden. Open year-round, this garden showcases over a dozen different themed gardens, including a Victorian Garden and a Healing Garden. There are frequently gardening classes offered as well. Be sure to check out the glass conservatory, the only of its kind in the mid-Atlantic. -
For those looking for boutique shopping near the Jefferson, River Road Shopping Center and River Road II are the stop for fashions, jewelry and home furnishings. Boutiques like the Pink Palm, Pendleton and Acorn are the staples of this shopping center. For those looking for a more upscale shopping mall, Stony Park Fashion Mall features Saks Fifth Avenue, Dillard’s and Galyan’s. This shopping center promises the highest-end shopping experience with boutiques like Louis Vuitton, Restoration Hardware and Tiffany & Co. Located just down the road from Richmond are the Lightfoot Prime Outlets in Williamsburg, including such stores as Burberry and Kate Spade among more than 100 retailers. If you prefer antiques, head to Carytown, where you’ll find over a mile of shopping, dining and antiquing at one of the East’s best shopping streets.
-
There are many great restaurants in Richmond, including two inside the hotel. Outside of the hotel, enjoy casual or fine dining fare nearby, including Shacklefords, Mosaic Café, Buckhead’s, Franco’s, The Water Grill, Lulu’s, Tarrants, Amuse at the Museum of Fine Art, The Dining Room at the Berkeley Hotel and many more.

Nightlife around the Jefferson Hotel is generally a short drive away - use the hotel’s complimentary car service to get around Richmond.

We love the friendly staff at The Jefferson. From the moment you arrive, each and every employee makes a genuine effort to learn your name and use it, to anticipate your every need and to make you feel welcome — as if you were a guest in his or her own home. Richmond is known for its friendliness and Southern hospitality and The Jefferson owns up to it.
We also love the history of The Jefferson. Because it opened in 1895, the hotel has over a century of fascinating history, including celebrity guests like Elvis, Frank Sinatra, Charlie Chaplin and eleven U.S. Presidents. The alligators that once roamed The Palm Court lobby, the priceless statue of Thomas Jefferson and the Grand Staircase, rumored to have ties with the iconic Gone with the Wind, are just a few of the elements within the hotel’s storied history. Visitors can find the full story of The Jefferson’s history in the on-site museum.
The architecture of The Jefferson is simply magnificent and could not be duplicated in today’s construction. The classic Beaux Arts façade, the two grand lobbies, the Tiffany stained glass, the wide guest hallways and dramatic openings, and, of course, the breath-taking Grand Staircase, make for some of the most inspiring public spaces in America.
The Jefferson is a favorite of local Richmonders for all dining occasions. From a drink with friends after work, to a milestone celebration, to entertaining guests from out-of-town, Lemaire and TJ's Restaurants, Champagne Sunday Brunch and Afternoon Tea are some of the most popular culinary destinations within the city. It's always a great sign when the locals put it at the top of their lists, too.
And lastly, we love the packages at The Jefferson. There is always a large selection available on the hotel's website. Many are offered year-round and make celebrating a special getaway easy. Then there are the seasonal packages, which are always a great value with exceptional price points and lots of inclusions. The hotel also partners with the local community to provide packages for the latest exhibits at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, the performing arts at Richmond CenterStage, the Richmond Jazz Fest, Historic Virginia Garden Week and Virginia Wine Month. There's always a great reason to visit The Jefferson. -

The Jefferson Hotel has many note-worthy details, but here’s a breakdown of the essential bits of knowledge you should know about this Forbes Travel Guide Five-Star hotel before you head to Richmond, Va.:
1. The hotel is filled with history. The most important thing to know about The Jefferson Hotel is that if you’re looking for a Five-Star historic experience in Richmond, you’ve found it. There’s even an onsite museum, which showcases photos, press mentions and historical artifacts from the hotel.
2. The décor is traditional. The Jefferson is one of Richmond’s most historic hotels and dates back to 1895. It’s rumored that the staircase in the grand Rotunda was the model for the staircase in Gone with the Wind. (The general manager assures us that Margaret Mitchell did stay at the hotel, but this can’t be confirmed.) In keeping with this rich history, the hotel is filled with traditional touches, including an impressive stained-glass dome in the lobby and magnificently decorated columns in the Rotunda.
3. The Jefferson is not the kid-friendliest hotel in Richmond. Though children are certainly welcome at the Five-Star hotel, there are not many activities specifically geared toward kids. You may not want to bring the little ones unless they’re old enough to appreciate the property.
4. You won’t need to leave to find a great bite to eat. The restaurants at The Jefferson are excellent — locals and guests alike flock for afternoon tea and the grand brunch in the Rotunda on Sundays. Be sure to make a reservation at Lemaire, the in-house restaurant boasting a chef who trained at The French Laundry, and enjoy its nightly happy hour specials.
5. The service at the hotel is exceptional. If you forget something or need help during your stay, the staff at The Jefferson is happy to help. -
The Jefferson Hotel features its original Beaux-Arts interior décor despite it being destroyed by a fire in the early 20th century. ?

The Jefferson Hotel can best be described using these five words:
Grand. From the moment guests arrive at The Jefferson, they are immediately taken by the grandeur of the hotel. The Beaux Arts architecture, all the beautiful furnishings and fixtures and the magnificent public spaces, in size alone, create this incredible sense of grandness.
Gracious. Not only is the staff at The Jefferson the epitome of graciousness, but the hotel itself invokes the feeling of the more genteel time, when it was created.
Comfortable. Though grand in appearance, The Jefferson Hotel is also known for its casual elegance, where guests are made to feel at home with genuine, friendly service, comfortable accommodations and a relaxing atmosphere.
Historic. A bit of Richmond’s history can be found at nearly every turn at The Jefferson Hotel. From the alligators that once roamed the Palm Court lobby, to the legends of the Grand Staircase, the politicians, dignitaries and celebrities that have been guests and the many business and social events that have been held at the hotel, history is made every day at The Jefferson Hotel.
Current. While The Jefferson holds firm to its history, that does not mean that guest’s will not enjoy the most current technologies for their convenience, dining and beverage services that reflect the latest culinary trends and the most luxurious products and services available for their comfort. -
The Jefferson Hotel is renowned for its holiday decoration displays. The highlight each year is the 28-foot Christmas tree that graces The Rotunda lobby. An annual tree lighting ceremony occurs each Monday following Thanksgiving, when a cast of Richmond’s favorite holiday characters from historical sites, museums and the performing arts make their holiday debut down the grand staircase.
The hotel’s own Blooms at The Jefferson creates this magical holiday spectacle each year replete with hundreds of poinsettias, countless trees, wreaths and garlands throughout the hotel and, of course, thousands of twinkling lights.
The Palm Court lobby is home to a hand-painted, Italian Nativity scene and one of the most treasured holiday traditions at The Jefferson — a child-sized Gingerbread House, which is a favorite for younger visitors and the young-at-heart. The pastry team at The Jefferson spends over one hundred hours of confectionary genius, creating this one of a kind display of gingerbread, cookies, candies and royal icing. -
The most romantic spot at The Jefferson is the grand staircase. There are those in Richmond who firmly believe this staircase was the model for the one featured in the Atlanta mansion sequences of the iconic movie, Gone with the Wind. Though this is an urban legend of sorts, it is difficult to stand before it without experiencing instant recall of Scarlett O’Hara being carried up those stairs in Rhett Butler’s arms.
In 1895, the first guests to ascend the now legendary grand staircase were the wedding guests of the nationally known beauty Irene Langhorne and the artist Charles Dana Gibson. In the ensuing century, hundreds upon hundreds of beautiful brides have paused on these 36 marble stairs to receive the admiration of their guests, their families and their grooms.
Be sure to bring your camera and make your own memory on The Jefferson’s grand staircase. -
