One of the most notorious people-watching spots in Aspen is at the Living Room bar at The Little Nell, especially during the holiday season when it’s a virtual parade of fur and diamonds. With its deep upholstered couches and chairs, the Living Room feels more like home than a hotel or bar. Between the comfortable seating and free entertainment, you might find yourself sitting there for long periods of time. The Living Room is central to The Little Nell’s other two bars: Montagna and The Terrace Room. Montagna has a distinct French café feel, featuring small tables and red tiled floors. The Terrace Room caters to the après-ski crowd with cowhide upholstery and a mountain-facing view.

The Little Nell goes out of its way to make sure kids receive as much special treatment (if not more) as the hotel’s other guests. There’s even a room package geared towards the elementary-aged set: it comes with goodies like puppet washcloths, bubble bath, and mini robes and slippers. The Little Nell also often rolls out the red carpet for kids — in the form of stuffed animals, homemade chocolate-chip cookies and s’mores kits at turndown service (it’s of course up to parents if they want to ply their kids with sugar before bed). The Little Nell Adventure program also has a slew of kid-friendly activities (mountainside treasure hunts, for example), and if you’re traveling with babies or toddlers, you’ll have access to everything from cribs to bottle warmers.

Drinking, eating and enjoying the Great Outdoors are the main activities at The Little Nell, so it makes sense that the hotel’s business center isn’t particularly alluring: it’s stuffed into a small, windowless space on the fourth floor (there’s a glass wall that opens out into the hallway, but that’s about it). During a stay at the hotel, “doing business” means answering emails on your iPhone while riding the gondola between ski runs. But should you need a more official set up, The Little Nell’s business center offers three Dell desktop computers, two printers (one black-and-white, one color), a scanner and a shredder. If work calls in the early morning hours, the business center can be accessed with a guest-room key 24 hours a day.

Aspen has an extensive trail system with countless jogging routes near The Little Nell. In the summer, runners can explore the East Aspen Trail, a paved-and-gravel path that begins blocks from The Little Nell on the corner of Original and Cooper streets. The trail, which is 7 miles roundtrip, was recently expanded with an extension that goes from downtown and meanders up Independence Pass over creeks and streams. Another stand out is the 40-mile Rio Grande Trail, which runs along the Roaring Fork River and is a favorite of local long-distance runners.

Let’s face it: An enjoyable vacation at The Little Nell might require a night away from the kids. If that’s the case, the hotel’s concierge can provide babysitting services through certified agencies in the area, so parents can be sure that their little ones are being watched by responsible, accountable childcare providers. Older kids can be fairly independent on parents’ night out, as Aspen boasts a low crime rate and free bus transportation within the downtown area.

If your ideal vacation involves hard-core chilling out (i.e. not doing much of anything), you’ll certainly be comfortable at The Little Nell — taking in the scenery is enough to keep you occupied, after all — but you’d be missing out on all the activities the hotel, and Aspen, has to offer. Aspen is a recreational mecca, and its residents are obsessed with staying active. To that end, The Little Nell has taken a cue from the locals with its Adventure Guides program, which leads outings like fly fishing, hiking a 14,000-foot peak (called a Fourteener in Colorado parlance) and mountain biking. In the winter, the hotel offers everything from heliskiing to private moonlit dinners atop Aspen Mountain, where you can indulge in outstanding farm-fresh food and sommelier-picked wines.

At the base of Aspen Mountain, beautiful people in designer ski gear congregate on Ajax Tavern’s patio at The Little Nell, gobbling gourmet munchies and guzzling cocktails. The eatery is one of The Little Nell’s two restaurants, and thanks to its slopeside location and comfort-food menu (burgers, fries, mussels), the spot draws huge lunch and après ski crowds. But Ajax Tavern, which is open year-round, doesn’t only serve bar snacks; it also churns out highbrow fare featuring sustainable, Colorado-bred meat and local, seasonal produce. We like the chanterelle-and-leek quiche and the Colorado lamb bolognese.
Downstairs at the Four-Star Montagna, European-influenced cuisine is blended with local ingredients to delicious effect. The restaurant also boasts a 20,000-bottle wine cellar, which is sure to please wine aficionados. We recommend diving into Montagna’s three-course prix fixe menu (with optional wine pairings), which offers starters like Maine peekytoe crab and citrus-cured fluke, followed a second course of heirloom tomato risotto and an entrée like Colorado lamb loin or Atlantic halibut. The biggest challenge? Finding room for dessert.

When The Little Nell revamped its guest rooms in 2009, the hotel outfitted them with modern touches that are convenient and user-friendly. Concerned about the environment? You can feel good flicking on Little Nell’s energy-efficient lights. If your ears are sensitive to intrusive knocks on the door, you’ll dig your room’s doorbell, which emits a charming tune when pressed. Music lovers will like the Denon clock radios, which have iPod and iPhone docks. But the hotel’s coziest technology was designed for your feet. Thanks to The Little Nell’s heated bathroom floors, your tootsies will never hit the cold floor, even in the winter.

Apologies to the nightstands and the dressers, but the centerpieces of The Little Nell’s guest rooms are the beds. Dressed in luxuriously soft, European-style linens (the sheets’ thread counts number more than 400), the comfy, spacious sleeping spots are boosted with fluffy pillow-top mattresses and decked out with piles of pillows. Better yet, you don’t have to make your bed — thanks to The Little Nell’s nightly turndown service, someone does it for you.

While it’s obvious that a lot of thought went into the interior design of The Little Nell’s guest rooms, the closets are pretty uniform. That’s not to say they’re not well-stocked: all come with a humidifier (great for combatting the nosebleed-sparking dryness of Colorado’s mountain air), an iron, extra blankets, built-in drawers, a hamper and a safe. Whether you’re planning a week-long getaway on the slopes or visiting Aspen for a special event, The Little Nell’s closets make perfect temporary homes for your gear.

Parking at The Little Nell is as simple as driving up to the hotel, handing the valet your key, and resting assured that your car will be whisked away to an underground garage, safe from winter snowstorms (the space is heated when the temperatures drop) or hot summer sun. If you’re not staying at The Little Nell but want to eat at the hotel’s Four-Star restaurant, Montagna, valet parking is free. Sure beats plunking quarters in the meters lining Aspens streets, which run 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

It’s easy to get to The Little Nell from the airport — because your plane lands only three miles from Aspen’s downtown. While the town is tucked into the Rocky Mountains four hours from Denver (the closest major metropolitan area), it’s convenient to reach by air, thanks to the Aspen-Pitkin County airport, a small commuter hub. Once you touch down on the runway, The Little Nell will send a complimentary car to pick you up — and the hotel will also drop you off at the airport sans charge when it’s time to go home.

In 2009, The Little Nell underwent its first major renovation since opening 20 years ago. World-renowned interior designer Holly Hunt (whose clients include Brad Pitt and Ellen DeGeneres) spearheaded the makeover; she calls the hotel’s design style "Aspen modern," an aesthetic that combines the city's roots (indigenous materials like stone, iron and wood are prominent) with a luxurious, modern feel. (The hotel’s owners didn’t want typical mountain decor like logs and antlers). The Little Nell’s colors - blue, chocolate brown and Earthy neutrals - are inspired by Colorado’s scenery and natural beauty. A particular highlight: the original artwork, by artists including painter Caio Fonseca and photographer Michael Eastman, commissioned by the hotel and featured in every room.

While almost everything you could need or want is within walking distance of The Little Nell, the hotel provides a no-charge shuttle service — in the form of a Cadillac Escalade — that will take you anywhere you want to go in the area. (This includes to and from the Aspen airport.) The chauffer service comes in handy for out-of-the-way destinations, whether it’s a private party on Red Mountain or a meal at the Pine Creek Cookhouse, a popular backcountry restaurant 14 miles up the Castle Creek Valley. If you’d rather take the wheel, you can reserve an Audi A8 (a sleek, $100,000 car) through the hotel’s complimentary Audi Drive program.

1. The Little Nell is located in one of the country’s ritziest resort towns, but its down-to-Earth attitude belies its zip code. Like the neighborhood bar where everyone knows your name, the hotel’s unpretentious atmosphere is what we love most about this property. Whether you’re a CEO or a college student, The Little Nell’s staff is thankful for your stay and will show you the respect to prove it.
2. Unlike larger, city-set Five-Star properties, The Little Nell feels like a boutique hotel. The intimate vibe is apparent in the hotel’s lobby and cozy Living Room, where guests hang out, have a drink and chat about their day. If you’re lucky, maybe you’ll pick up some ski tips.
3. Fans of The Little Nell know its rooms are spacious, with cathedral ceilings and lots of natural light. But because of the hotel’s unique shape, each room has its own layout and design. The custom touches - from original artwork to live plants to cozy, decorative pillows - lend a homey feel.
4. The Little Nell’s staff is super attentive, anticipating your needs before even you do. The team makes sure every detail is covered, from whipping your room into immaculate shape to replacing your toilet paper - which is always folded into a perfect triangle.
5. It’s home to the Four-Star Montagna. The restaurant turns out seasonal cuisine with local ingredients, like the tender Colorado lamb tenderloin that comes from a farm 20 miles away. Be sure to order some wine, too. If the 20,000-bottle collection overwhelms you, ask one of the three master sommeliers on staff to suggest some pairings.

The Little Nell is so close to Aspen Mountain that you can practically roll out of bed and onto the gondola (that’s what locals call the chairlift). Located at 675 Durant Street at the base of the mountain, The Little Nell is the only hotel within steps of the gondola, which makes it Aspen’s most desirable (and only) Five-Star property. Aside from the hotel’s proximity to top-notch ski runs and killer views — the majestic mountain to the south; the town’s posh main drag to the north — it’s super close to the après-ski action. Durant and Spring streets are just outside The Little Nell’s doors; there, you can hit more than 80 bars and restaurants, plus designer boutiques and art galleries.

Depending on the month, the average price of a room at The Little Nell varies dramatically. During peak ski season — especially around Christmas and New Year’s — Aspen is bumping with celebrities and other well-heeled visitors. The hotel’s winter rates reflect the town’s glitzy tourists, with a standard room going for an average of $1,000 per night. In the summer, when hiking, biking and local festivals replace hurtling down snowy mountains as the main forms of entertainment, ,The Little Nell’s rates drop to an average of $575 per night. But don’t overlook the fall: September in Aspen is gorgeous, with dry, sunny weather and vibrantly colored foliage. Plus, you’ll only have to shell out about $230 per night for a room at The Little Nell.

As room demand at The Little Nell skyrockets, the cancellation policy becomes more stringent. Occasions like Christmas, New Year’s and Spring Break tend to draw the biggest crowds, so during high-volume times, cancellations must be made 60 days in advance. For any other time, a 30-day cancellation is required. (In all cases, a 50 percent fee is required to hold your room.) If you don’t cancel within those periods, you’ll be charged for the entire duration of the planned stay. Because of the financial commitment, we recommend solidifying your plans before booking; you don’t want to miss out on The Little Nell experience and your money.

Brunch is offered on the weekends at The Little Nell at its onsite restaurants Montagna and Ajax Tavern. Popular for its “Make Your Own Bloody” menu, Ajax Tavern attracts a lively crowd and offers some nontraditional items, like chicken liver pâté and truffle fries. Brunch dishes are creatively interpreted, taking the breakfast/lunch combo literally with items like sweet potato pancakes and duck confit hash. Montagna’s menu is more traditional, offering a wide selection of housemade baked goods (banana and zucchini bread and sugared brioche) and a combination of the standard breakfast and lunch menus with signature dishes like huevos rancheros and the ever-popular Cobb salad.

Personal trainers are available to book (for an additional fee) in The Little Nell gym for 30-, 50- or 80-minute sessions. These trainers at The Little Nell take fitness seriously, incorporating Rip-CoreFX — a popular strength-training regimen developed and launched in Aspen in 2010. Using Active Isolated Stretching (AIS), which holds multiple repetitions of stretches for two seconds each, this type of workout is meant to increase fat loss, create leaner muscles, improve sports performance and ramp up energy. We recommend these sessions if you enjoy one-on-one attention, but there are no regularly scheduled fitness classes offered onsite.

A stiff drink that’s unique to The Little Nell is the Montagna Martini, an unusual combination of prosecco, St-Germain and Van Gogh Wild Apple Vodka. St-Germain, a liquor made from elderflower, has a sweet bitterness to it that reminds us of herbal tea (but it probably isn’t as healthy). During the winter season, the bar at Montagna offers another signature drink: the Hot Buttered Peach. This play on hot buttered rum features local peach bourbon and a cheek-puckering sweet topping that turns this cocktail into more of a liquid dessert.

The Terrace Room caters to the après-ski crowd with cowhide upholstery and a mountain-facing view.

In a town where the lifestyle is dictated by the outdoors, it makes sense that The Little Nell offers rooms with balconies. Out of the 92 rooms, 72 have balconies or terraces — most of which are on the mountainside of the hotel. With more than 300 days of sunshine a year, most people want to soak it in. What many don’t realize is just how warm it can be — even in winter — under those electric-blue Colorado skies.

The Little Nell reopened in November 2009 after all its rooms and junior suites underwent a major renovation. The effort was spearheaded by Chicago-based interior designer Holly Hunt, who gave The Little Nell an updated look without taking too grand of a departure from the style and tradition that has given the Five-Star hotel a loyal following since it opened in 1989. The solution was to create a style wholly unique to The Little Nell — one that reflected Aspen’s diverse culture and ideals via a modern aesthetic, but also found inspiration in the beauty of the mountain surroundings. In the process the rooms received upgraded technology, new fireplaces and totally renovated all-marble bathrooms with state-of-the-art sunken tubs, separate showers, and his and her vanities.

Almost every room on the mountainside of The Little Nell has spectacular views of the Aspen Mountain scene. In the winter, you’ll catch glimpses of skiers shushing down Aspen Mountain’s illustrious slopes; in the summer, you’ll watch as the gondola whisks visitors up to explore the summit. Many of the rooms offer furnished balconies for getting an even closer look, and all the rooms have big windows that let in the light and give you prime views. Though rooms on the south side might not face the mountain, they do overlook downtown Aspen and get great morning light.

The standard rooms at The Little Nell offer many special amenities. One of our favorites is the in-room bars and their selection of top-shelf libations. A glass shelf displays Patrón, Ketel One, Johnny Walker Black Label and Woodford Reserve. The rooms also come equipped with the appropriate glassware: tumblers and martini glasses, a shaker and even a menu of cocktail recipes that’s hidden inside an antique book just in case you’re not up on the latest mixology trends. The snacks are gourmet and produced locally, making them a step above your standard hotel fare.

The 2,000-square-foot Pfeifer Suite at The Little Nell is one of the hotel’s best rooms — just ask visiting stars like Kate Hudson, Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell. The two-bedroom suite can be enlarged to three or four bedrooms, with a private entrance to all rooms. The space features touches like a large living and entertaining area with a 42-inch LG LCD flat-screen TV, a Bose sound system with iPod docking station and music library, a desktop computer system, DVD players, Bluetooth wireless headphones and a fax machine. You can relax by the gas-log fireplace or in the oversize Jacuzzi tub, and serve yourself a drink from the full-service wet bar stocked with top-shelf liquor and an extensive wine collection. There are also two large balconies on either side of the suite that overlook Aspen Mountain — so close to the slopes you can practically touch the skiers.
Another option is the lavish Paepcke Suite. It offers all the same amenities as the Pfeifer Suite, but it’s slightly bigger and has richer, more masculine décor (think wood-paneled walls that make you want to smoke cigars and chairs with studded upholstery).

The bath products at The Little Nell are all-natural, custom-made First Tracks spa amenities by June Jacobs. Bath products include shampoo, conditioner, shower gel and body balm moisturizer. Jacobs, a world-renowned spa visionary for more than 30 years, has redefined the luxury spa. As the creator of three global skin care lines, and with a continued commitment to innovation and quality, Jacobs set out to change the landscape of skin care within the spa market through the creation of the June Jacobs Spa Collection. To maintain the highest levels of quality and standards in manufacturing, Jacobs also opened an independent laboratory called June Jacobs Labs. Her collaboration with The Little Nell resulted in First Tracks, a custom line of products created especially for the Five-Star hotel.

Every guestroom and suite at The Little Nell is different. There are 30 varieties of rooms, and all 92 have unique characteristics that lend a distinct residential feel to the Five-Star hotel. It’s not just the décor that’s different. Since the building itself has an interesting shape, the room layouts vary, too.
All the standard rooms and junior suites underwent a renovation in late 2009, spearheaded by Chicago-based interior designer Holly Hunt, who created a design style she calls “Aspen Modern.” This resulted in rooms that have a modern feel and feature muted tones of gray and beige.
The beds stand out with plush linens (think big down duvets and rows of oversize pillows) and unique, decorative pillows. All the rooms have marble bathrooms with heated floors and backlit vanities, plus a sunken tub and separate shower with thick towels and robes. There are also large windows that offer nice views and plenty of natural light, as well as some kind of living area, whether it’s a couch and coffee table or large upholstered chairs. You’ll find a workspace (either a desk or a large table and chair), though most people who visit Aspen find they’re hardly interested in working.

If your ideal vacation involves hard-core chilling out (i.e., not doing much of anything), you'll certainly be comfortable at The Little Nell — taking in the scenery is enough to keep you occupied, after all — but you'd be missing out on all the activities the hotel, and Aspen, has to offer.

Sure beats plunking quarters in the meters lining Aspens streets, which run 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

What to pack for a stay at The Little Nell depends on the time of year and what sports or activities you plan to do while you’re there. Sporting equipment can take up a lot of space in your luggage, but everything from ski equipment to clothing can be purchased or rented when you get there. And while Aspen is a fashion-savvy town — its streets are lined with designer boutiques like Gucci, Dior and Prada — the dress code is mountain casual. With this in mind, be sure to pack these five things for your stay at the Five-Star hotel:
1. Lots of layers. In the high altitude of the Rocky Mountains, temperatures can oscillate wildly from hour to hour and even day to day. Everything is a bit more extreme when you’re 8,000 feet above sea level, so even if the sun goes behind the clouds the temperature can drop 10 to 15 degrees. That’s why breathable, waterproof layers (think fleece jackets, polypropylene long underwear and Gore-Tex jackets) are a must.
2. Sunscreen. No matter the time of year the sun is strong when you’re almost two miles high (the summit of Aspen Mountain is 11,212 feet). Be sure to protect your skin with sunscreen.
3. Sunglasses. These are essential as cornea burn due to sun exposure is a very real risk while skiing (sun that reflects off the snow is particularly harmful). Not to mention that it’s sunny in Colorado more than 300 days a year.
4. Comfortable walking shoes. Aspen is a walking-friendly town and The Little Nell is located in the epicenter of its downtown. You’ll want comfortable shoes for perusing the shops and exploring the 80 bars and restaurants.
5. Camera. You’ll want to document the jaw-dropping scenery around the Five-Star hotel.

Poolside amenities at The Little Nell are the kinds of touches that make this Five-Star hotel stand apart from other accommodations in Aspen. In winter, you’ll find a heated cabinet filled with robes and towels to keep you snug and cozy as you move out of the heated pool and into the cold air. In the summer, the washcloths are cold and attendants will cool you down with a spray of Evian water or a slew of cold treats, such as homemade organic popsicles and smoothies. Dogs are allowed in the pool area, and get pampered with a chrome water bowl. Guests can also order drinks or nibbles from the Montagna bar menu, making the pool that much more luxurious and comfortable.

Summer rates start at $565 in the heart of season; winter rates start at $860; and the spring and fall seasons start at $365. The Little Nell often offers special rates and deals, such as “ski free” specials and third, fourth and fifth night free promotions.
-
As room demand at The Little Nell skyrockets, the cancellation policy becomes more stringent.

Since there’s nothing worse than hidden fees and small-print charges that can inflate your hotel bill, the only mandatory charge you need to worry about at The Little Nell is a standard 5-percent resort fee. On top of that, any other fee is optional or at least avoidable. Famous for its pet-friendly Petiquette program, The Little Nell is willing to pamper your pup for an additional $125 for the first night and $25 per night thereafter. While pets are welcome, smokers are not: Light up in your room and it’ll cost you an additional $300.

1. The best thing about The Little Nell is the legendary service guests receive. Whether taking care of a guest’s pet or tracking down their favorite book, our staff delights in going above and beyond guest expectations to create a truly memorable experience.
2. Another perk of the property is its location. You can’t beat ski-in, ski-out.
3. The Little Nell is also known for its dining. The casual Ajax Tavern is a great place for lunch or après, while the hotel’s Montagna Restaurant offers award-winning fare that is not only local and sustainable but also delicious.
v4. We love the hotel’s wine list and fun specialty cocktails that change throughout the seasons.
5. Finally, we love the hotel’s unique Adventure Program, which offers activities like fly fishing, guided hiking, overnight horse pack trips and more for guests. Of course, this all comes with the legendary service, food and beverage the property is known for. -

Christmas and New Year’s are the most popular times to visit The Little Nell, but we’ve found that the best time of year to visit is mid-September. That’s when the Aspen leaves are turning, the weather is amazing, the town is quiet and rates at the Five-Star hotel drop by almost 80 percent. While winter is about skiing, the warmer months present opportunities to do a wide variety of activities like hiking, biking and fishing. Summers in Aspen are all about culture. Things kick off each year with the Food & Wine Classic, and run all summer with Aspen Music Festival and School concerts, The Aspen Ideas Festival at the Aspen Institute, Jazz Aspen Snowmass June Festival concerts, Theatre Aspen productions under the tent and the Aspen Writers’ Foundation Summer Words literary festival and writers’ workshops.

Here are our top five picks for recreational activities near The Little Nell:
1. Snow Sports: Aspen is lucky to have not only one but four resorts nearby. In addition to Aspen Mountain in town, Buttermilk is great for beginners, while Snowmass is perfect for families. Aspen Highlands is sometimes called “the local’s resort,” but in addition to its draw-dropping double blacks, it has a great variety of terrain. If downhill winter sports aren’t your thing, there’s a variety of cross country trails, ice skating and snowshoeing to get you outside and enjoying the snow.
2. Get your culture fix: From art galleries to the acclaimed Aspen Music Festival, Aspen is swimming in culture. Lectures at the Aspen Institute, along with films during the Aspen Film Fest, music at the Wheeler Opera House and late-night acts at the Belly Up, ensure that there’s no shortage of entertainment. Other favorites include the Aspen Santa Fe Ballet and the popular “theater in the park” at Theatre Aspen.
3. Hiking: Aspen is surrounded by the White River National Forest, and within moments of stepping outside your hotel, you can be hiking on one of hundreds of miles of trails. The iconic Maroon Bells is a perfect place to hit the trails.
4. Shopping: Aspen has no shortage of shopping. It’s home to luxury brands like Dior and Prada, as well as a variety of unique specialty shops. From independent bookstores to secondhand shops, Aspen has something for every budget.
5. Dining: With over 80 eateries to choose from, Aspen has big appetite for such a small town. Sushi, farm-to-table, BBQ and more are available to suit any palate, and the après ski scene features fun cocktails, lively music and delicious nibbles. Don’t be surprised if you’re still in your ski pants come 8 p.m., après can sometimes last well into the night in Aspen. -
The Aspen Historical Society is a great resource for anyone visiting town. Its Wheeler-Stallard Museum, located in the West End just blocks from The Little Nell, is a fun stop for any visitor. The Historical Society also offers a variety of unique programming, including a “history coach” as well as a historic bike tour around town. The Aspen Art Museum is a must for any contemporary art buff. The museum is currently located down Mill Street, but it’s moving forward with plans for a new building in downtown Aspen. The new building is being designed by acclaimed architect Shigeru Ban and is expected to open in 2013.

Aspen has 30 world-class parks, all located within a few blocks of The Little Nell. The popular Wagner Park, which is located downtown, is a great park for playing rugby, throwing a Frisbee or attending a special event. The Little Nell is located at the base of Aspen Mountain, which is part of the White River National Forest that surrounds most of Aspen.

-
Montagna Restaurant is located inside The Little Nell, and the adjacent Ajax Tavern is accessed at the top of the stairs from the pool. Downtown Aspen also offers an array of nearby eateries for all tastes.
-
The Little Nell is located at the base of the gondola at the foot of Aspen Mountain. Skiing, hiking and activities on top of Aspen Mountain (like free bluegrass music on Sundays in the summer) are easily accessible from The Little Nell. Because Aspen is so small and The Little Nell is located in the heart of downtown, we are close to all the activities Aspen has to offer.
-
Montagna Bar, the Living Room and the Terrace Bar are all located inside The Little Nell hotel. Why would you ever want to leave? If you’re in the mood for something elevated… and we mean really elevated, we also offer a champagne POP-up bar on Aspen Mountain at 11,000 feet. The mobile bar is available on weekends on Aspen Mountain, and the location can only be found by following The Little Nell on Twitter or Facebook.

From its laid-back luxury vibe to its pet-friendly policy, The Little Nell is unique among Five-Star hotels. Here are five things you should know before you check in:
1. The Little Nell isn’t kidding when it says pets are welcome. Famous for its pet-friendly Petiquette program, dogs are welcome in the lobby Living Room, Montagna bar and the pool and courtyard area. There is no limit on your pooch’s size — good news if you run into trouble trying to bring your oversize breed elsewhere. If you’re not a fan of dogs or are allergic to them, keep in mind that they’re hard to avoid at The Little Nell.
2. It goes above and beyond to accommodate families with children. The staff will pamper your little ones with all kinds of amenities and gifts to spoil them as much (if not more) than you do. There are no kid-free zones here.
3. The Five-Star hotel has a decidedly modern aesthetic. While The Little Nell could be categorized as mountain-contemporary or even Aspen-casual, its clean lines, beige hues and airy, open spaces are a far cry from a classic ski lodge. Luxury and sophistication trump Old West décor here.
4. The Little Nell often sells out. This happens even more so during the holidays, so be sure to book in advance to guarantee availability and a variety of room options.
5. There is no onsite spa. If your idea of a ski vacation is to hang out at the spa while everyone else hits the slopes, you should know that The Little Nell is not a spa destination. However, the concierge can arrange for you to have massages and other spa treatments. -
The design style of The Little Nell can be described in these five words: relaxed, residential, friendly, casual and unpretentious.
Its overall style comes through not only in its design, but in its general attitude. Compared to most Five-Star hotels, its vibe is very relaxed — both in the way the staff approaches you and in the way you’ll conduct yourself around The Little Nell. It’s definitely a put-your-feet-up hotel with no requirements for attire.
Because each room at The Little Nell has its own individual quality, the hotel as a whole has a residential feel. No two guestrooms are exactly alike. Because of the building’s odd shape, all rooms have a slightly different layout and some variation in décor — whether it’s the color scheme or the books laid out on the coffee table.
The guest and staff interactions here can only be described as friendly. The lobby Living Room, restaurant and bar are all centrally located on the ground floor around the main entrance, encouraging a level of social interaction that might not be as common at a city hotel. It is also characteristic of Aspen locals to strike up a conversation with a total stranger without coming across as intrusive.
With both dogs and people lounging around The Little Nell’s lobby Living Room, the hotel sets the bar high for a casual experience. It is an anomaly among its luxury peers.
And on that same note, The Little Nell has an unpretentious atmosphere and attitude, which should disprove Aspen’s reputation for being a destination for the jet-setting elite alone.
-
While almost everything you could need or want is within walking distance of The Little Nell, the hotel provides a no-charge shuttle service — in the form of a Cadillac Escalade — that will take you anywhere you want to go in the area.
-
As a nod to the “Aspen Idea” and to the city’s roots, internationally-renowned residential designer Holly Hunt has recreated our boutique hotel accommodations to offer guests the highest level of comfort away from home. The Little Nell’s modern “Aspen Aesthetic” design exhibits touches of classic Aspen with warm tones and a residential feel. The aesthetic is geometric and sculptural, in palettes of cream, blue and chocolate. The textured fabrics, walnut tables, wide leather chairs, velvet wrapped banquets, closet “barn doors” and stone-clad gas-burning fireplaces add to the feeling of comfort and elegance. Modern artists with classical foundations were selected to complement the design and unique attributes of each room.
-
If your ideal vacation involves hard-core chilling out (i.e. not doing much of anything), you’ll certainly be comfortable at The Little Nell — taking in the scenery is enough to keep you occupied, after all — but you’d be missing out on all the activities the hotel, and Aspen, has to offer. Sure beats plunking quarters in the meters lining Aspens streets, which run 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
-
Drinking, eating and enjoying the Great Outdoors are the main activities at The Little Nell, so it makes sense that the hotel’s business center isn’t particularly alluring: it’s stuffed into a small, windowless space on the fourth floor (there’s a glass wall that opens out into the hallway, but that’s about it).
-
The Little Nell goes out of its way to make sure kids receive as much special treatment (if not more) as the hotel’s other guests.
-
Let’s face it: An enjoyable vacation at The Little Nell might require a night away from the kids.
-
The unique combination of luxury and a relaxed attitude makes The Little Nell different from other Five-Star hotels. Despite Aspen’s reputation for being a playground for the jet-setting elite, the hotel is a testament to how that’s not always true. Walk into The Little Nell lobby and its popular Living Room, and you’ll find people of all walks of life congregated around the fireplace (more often than not with their various breeds of dogs) dressed in everything from ski boots to designer duds. While the hotel’s service is of the highest quality (the staff will know your name from the moment you check in), the attitude here is decidedly unpretentious. What’s nice about that is you can dress up or dress down, whether you’re collapsing into one of the deep-cushioned upholstered couches with a hot drink after a day on the slopes or enjoying a late-night cocktail after a black-tie soiree. Anything goes here. After all, it’s hard to take anything too seriously when there’s a cockapoo with a ponytail on top of its head sitting next to you or a 120-pound Alaskan malamute dozing on the floor.
-
A heated cabinet provides warm towels, robes and chair covers. There are also a variety of magazines, and fresh Aspen drinking water is provided along with sunscreen. Cocktails snacks and refreshments are available by waiter service from the Montagna Bar. Throughout warm summer afternoons, a variety of complimentary signature refreshments are brought around to guests as a special treat.
-
The Little Nell has pressing and laundry service in-house, as well as same-day dry cleaning. Additionally, all rooms have an iron and ironing board located in the closet.
-
The Little Nell offers a variety of activities and adventures during guests’ stay at the property. The Little Nell’s new Adventure program offers a variety of outings, including fly-fishing trips and guided hikes. In the winter, the property offers lift tickets, ski rental, private and group lessons, and much more to take advantage of vacationing in one of the top ski resorts in the world.
-
If your ideal vacation involves hard-core chilling out (i.e., not doing much of anything), you'll certainly be comfortable at The Little Nell — taking in the scenery is enough to keep you occupied, after all — but you'd be missing out on all the activities the hotel, and Aspen, has to offer.
-
Parking at The Little Nell is as simple as driving up to the hotel, handing the valet your key, and resting assured that your car will be whisked away to an underground garage, safe from winter snowstorms (the space is heated when the temperatures drop) or hot summer sun. If you’re not staying at The Little Nell but want to eat at the hotel’s Four-Star restaurant, Montagna, valet parking is free. Sure beats plunking quarters in the meters lining Aspens streets, which run 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
-
High-speed wireless Internet access is available throughout the hotel, and each hotel room has a high-speed Internet access point if a guest wants a hardwire connection.
-
The Little Nell is tastefully and classically decorated for the holidays with wreaths, greenery and holiday lighting. The lobby is festive, with touches of the holidays in common areas throughout the property. Guest rooms feature small amounts of holiday décor, which may be removed at a guest’s request. Also at a guest’s request, we are able to place and decorate a tree in their suite or guest room.
-
You won’t find any holiday events hosted by The Little Nell, but the holidays in Aspen are enough of an event in and of themselves. Walk out the front door of the Five-Star hotel anytime between Christmas and New Year’s, and you’re bound to see a herd of paparazzi stalking the resident celebrities who come to town every year for the holidays (Kate Hudson, Heidi Klum and Mariah Carey included). The streets are decorated with lights and the whole town buzzes with energy. There’s an endless holiday party circuit and a packed calendar of city-sponsored events — from live outdoor concerts to a spectacular fireworks display on New Year’s Eve.
-
Drinking, eating and enjoying the Great Outdoors are the main activities at The Little Nell, so it makes sense that the hotel’s business center isn’t particularly alluring: it’s stuffed into a small, windowless space on the fourth floor (there’s a glass wall that opens out into the hallway, but that’s about it).
-
The Little Nell boasts a variety of meeting spaces. Our selection of well-appointed meeting rooms and special events facilities will accommodate a variety of gatherings. With 1,800 square feet available, the Grand Salon can accommodate meetings for up to 95 people or 200 of your guests for breakfast, lunch or dinner. When the gathering ends, guests can continue their discussions and enjoy outstanding food and drinks at Montagna restaurant or at the Living Room. The Boardroom comfortably seats up to 18 guests in comfortable chairs that surround a broad mahogany table. In addition, the Boardroom comes completely equipped to handle any state-of-the-art audio/visual presentation.
-
The Little Nell will gladly rent a laptop to a guest if the need arises.
-
Each guest room has either a desk or a large table on which a business traveler can spread out and work at ease while enjoying high-speed wireless Internet or a hardwired connection, if preferred. Laptops and printers are available for rental if the guest prefers the privacy that provides, rather than using our state-of-the-art equipment in the guest business center. A selection of rooms are also wired to accept a fax machine if desired. The Little Nell is happy to assist with a variety of business needs including printing, faxing, copying and Notary needs. The Little Nell also has a variety of meeting spaces available for rental that can accommodate business meetings.
-
The Little Nell is a kid-friendly hotel, offering amenities for children that include bedtime stories, stuffed animals, kid-friendly treats like marshmallow snowmen served upon check-in and complimentary hot chocolate in the winter. The hotel's Adventure Program is ideal for kids, offering adventures like guided hikes and geocaching. Complimentary games are also available to children, such as croquet, horseshoes and bocce ball.
-
The Little Nell’s Adventure Program offers children the opportunity to learn how to fly-fish on excursions that are specifically designed for them. They’ll learn how to identify insects, fish and enjoy nature, all under the watchful eye of an experienced guide. Other kid-friendly activities include guided hikes, geocaching and overnight horse pack trips for the entire family. Kids ski school programs are available in the winter through the Aspen Skiing Company.
-
One of life’s most special moments deserves a memorable and spectacular setting. This makes The Little Nell the ideal destination and resource in Aspen, Colorado, for a romantic wedding and reception for two or 200. Thanks to the hotel’s exclusive access to Aspen Mountain, The Little Nell can create a wedding like no other. The spectacular Wedding Deck is an outside wedding location on Aspen Mountain that looks out onto the Rocky Mountains. Many couples choose to have their reception at the Sundeck or the Aspen Mountain Club. Both are located atop Aspen Mountain and are reached by a dramatic gondola ride. Weddings can also be arranged in Montagna Restaurant or other areas in the hotel.
-
As the name suggests, The Wedding Deck on the summit of Aspen Mountain is a popular location for weddings. It comes with jaw-dropping views of the surrounding mountains, stadium-style seating and a wooden platform that’s built into the side of the mountain to maximize the views of the surrounding mountains and — of course — the bride and groom. There are two reception sites that are also on the summit: The exclusive Aspen Mountain Club, a private dining club, and the Sundeck, the larger summit lodge. Wedding receptions can also be held in any of The Little Nell’s restaurants, bars or meeting rooms.
-
If you are planning a wedding at The Little Nell, you can create an extravagant event or a small and intimate affair. Weddings at the hotel start at $95 to $120 per plate and go up from there, depending on wine and dessert selections, additional bar setup, buffet and any other details. The Little Nell is willing to work with any budget to customize a wedding that works for you. The average cost can come down if you’re willing to consider off-peak times and hours, like an afternoon luncheon on a Sunday afternoon.
-
To say The Little Nell is pet-friendly would be an understatement. Aspen is a dog-obsessed town and The Little Nell is no exception. There is no weight limit for dogs: big dogs, small dogs, those with long hair, those with short hair, pure breeds, mutts — all four-legged friends are welcome and treated like royalty. The Little Nell’s signature Petiquette pet package ($125 for the first night and $25 for each night thereafter) includes a long list of canine amenities.
-
The Little Nell pampers four-legged guests with personalized brass identification tags, a Little Nell leash, sanitary bags, pet wipes, food and water bowls, dog beds, pet menu selections, dog walking and sitting on request, petiquette handbook of guidelines, recommended pet-friendly hiking trails and gourmet doggie biscuits.
-
There are a variety of romantic locations at The Little Nell. Enjoy a romantic dinner for two at Montagna, or snuggle up in front of the fireplace in our Living Room with some hot chocolate. Or perhaps enjoy the hot tub in our courtyard as snow falls all around you?

The Little Nell is a chic and contemporary ski lodge in the heart of Aspen. Here are the five best amenities at the Five-Star hotel:
1. Luxury cars. There aren’t many hotels that will lend $100,000 vehicles to you during your stay, but the Audi Drive program at The Little Nell is one of the Five-Star hotel’s best amenities. You can reserve the A8 or the Q7 and take it out for the entire day, whether it’s to test the car’s turning abilities on the precarious 20-mile road up Independence Pass or to hear the purr of the engine on a scenic drive up to the Maroon Bells.
2. The Petiquette program. With this signature pet-friendly service, The Little Nell will pamper your furry friends with walks, pet beds and a gourmet meal menu.
3. Ski concierge. The Little Nell’s dedicated ski concierge team will keep your boots warm and dry and store your equipment, so all you have to do is step into your bindings in the morning and click out of them at the end of the day.
4. Adventure concierge. In the summer, the adventure concierge takes all the guesswork out of planning a wide variety of mountain activities, from helicopter trips and hikes to mountain biking and Jeep tours.
5. Fly-fishing program. This is another amenity that’s unique to The Little Nell. The fly-fishing program offers outings — complete with signature touches like gourmet meals and wine pairings — for everyone from novices to experts. -
Inside the well-stocked mini-bar at The Little Nell you’ll find everything from snack staples (nuts) to more unique items (canned oxygen — one of the hotel’s most popular offerings). The Five-Star hotel goes out of its way to offer guests items that are singular to Colorado, which is why it’s filled with local beers like New Belgium Flat Tire and Odell Easy Street Wheat. It also has liquor standards like chilled champagne and tequila, and non-alcoholic choices like San Pellegrino, Fever-Tree tonic water, Brain Toniq (meant to give you a boost of mental clarity) and the recently added Sipp Ginger Blossom, a sparkling eco-friendly, organic juice drink. Snack options include local favorites like Justin’s Peanut Butter Cups and Chukar Cherries Nuts over Bings. Dig in and enjoy — everything in the mini-bar is free to guests of the hotel.

-
Our one-bedroom suites provide 850 square feet of residential opulence divided amongst a living/dining area and private bedroom with king bed. Two of the One Bedroom Town View Suites have an additional half bath in the foyer, a unique split-level floor plan and vaulted A-Frame ceilings. Serenity can be found in the panoramic vista of downtown Aspen and the mountains beyond or by simply basking in the large Jacuzzi tub or steam shower. The flat-screen LCD HD TV, Blu-Ray DVD player and Denon stereo CD player (with iPod docking station) offer luxury and comfort that is second only to home. Our three specialty suites offer the height of luxury. The finest, the Paepcke Suite, is a 2,500-square-foot suite that is sumptuously decorated with rich maple-paneled walls and hardwood floors. It’s complete with expansive balcony with panoramic vistas of Aspen Mountain. It is decorated in warm mountain colors and soft tapestry rugs with fireplaces in the living room and bedroom. An ideal space for relaxing or elegant entertaining, the living room features a coffered ceiling, grand fireplace, premium full-service wet bar, dining table for six, an expansive office and state-of-the art media systems. The master bedroom is an alluring haven of privacy with a luxurious master bath and thoughtful attention to details throughout. The Paepcke Suite can be expanded to include two bedrooms. In addition, it has the added perk of being entirely powered by its own array of solar panels. -
Each guest room has either a desk or a large table on which a traveler can spread out and work at ease while enjoying high-speed wireless Internet or a hardwire connection, if preferred. Pen and paper are also provided.

The Little Nell offers guests exclusive, all-natural “First Tracks” June Jacobs spa amenities. Bath products include soap, lotion, shower gel, shampoo, conditioner, loofas and bath pillows.
-
The 2,000-square-foot Pfeifer Suite at The Little Nell is one of the hotel’s best rooms — just ask visiting stars like Kate Hudson, Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell.
All of our rooms feature bathrobes and slippers, humidifiers for the dry mountain air, umbrellas, blankets, shoe horns, live plants, a collection of books and magazines, a sampling of CDs and extensive mini-bars/wet bars. Nightly turndown surprises are a fun amenity for our guests, and mini-bar items (excluding alcohol) in our suites are complimentary.

-
The Little Nell has up to 35 connecting options, from two standard rooms connecting to each other all the way up to a four-bedroom alternative. All of the 14 suites at The Little Nell can be connected to one, two or three other rooms, an ideal option for larger families who can afford the higher room rate. Suites also feature many at-home amenities that make traveling with kids so much easier, including larger wet bar and eating areas, living rooms and entertainment areas. PlayStations and video games can be had upon request, and children’s amenities like stuffed animals and homemade marshmallow snowmen are also available if you ask.

The Little Nell has 24-hour room service, as well as room service for pets.
-
The Little Nell offers three bars, each with its own matchless appeal, individual gourmet themes, and thorough collection of wine, beer and spirits. The Montagna Bar offers guests a sophisticated haven that’s ideal for a small gathering of friends or a romantic rendezvous. The Terrace Bar is a casual gathering place with lively atmosphere that’s been recognized as one of the best après ski lounges in the country. Open from 3 p.m. until the party winds down, the Terrace Bar overlooks the hotel’s courtyard and Aspen Mountain and serves an incredible selection of Global tapas culled from native cuisines along the 13th Parallel. The Terrace Bar is open during our winter season. The Living Room is a bright yet cozy space that wraps around our two-sided fireplace with intimate arrangements of comfortable furniture. It’s an ideal spot to enjoy a glass of wine while sampling the Montagna bar menu. -
Breakfast is served daily at The Little Nell’s Montagna Restaurant from 7 a.m. to 10:30 am., and room service is also available. The Little Nell also offers “First Tracks Breakfast” during the ski season on Wednesdays. For $25, guests can enjoy a tasty breakfast atop Aspen Mountain, and then be the first to hit the slopes.
-
The Little Nell has a broad variety of breakfast dishes from house-made pastries to fresh fruit and granola. Signature breakfast dishes include lemon soufflé pancakes with pine nuts and homemade raspberry syrup. The “Montagna” Benedict features two poached eggs, house-made porchetta, heirloom tomatoes and hollandaise sauce.
-
The menu at The Little Nell’s Montagna Restaurant is ever-changing, making use of what’s in season and what’s available from local and sustainable resources. A few signature stars from the dinner menu include the Emma Farm Wagyu Tenderloin with red pepper, paprika and spaetzle; Colorado Lamb Loin with artichoke, eggplant, curry and yogurt; and the colorful Summer Vegetable Garden with season veggies served on goat cheese with a lemon vinaigrette. -
The Little Nell offers a variety of specialty cocktails, which change according to the season. A favorite is the Montagna Martini, which features Prosecco, St. Germain and Van Gogh Wild Apple Vodka. A winter favorite is the Hot Buttered Peach, a play on hot buttered rum, which features local peach bourbon and a deliciously sweet topping that’s perfect for an afternoon by the fire.
-
The Little Nell has a 20,000-plus-bottle cellar and a 1,500-bottle wine list. Wines are available for purchase by the glass as well as the bottle. Jonathan Pullis, the master sommelier and wine director at The Little Nell, carefully curates the hotel’s Wine Spectator Grand Award-winning wine program. The hotel offers an ever-changing selection of Wines for the Times, which are bottles of wine featured for under $50.
-
While The Little Nell occasionally hosts live jazz bands featuring musicians from all over the world, the real entertainment at the Five-Star hotel is the people watching. Between the dogs and their owners — both outfitted in fur — there’s plenty to see in the lobby. This is especially true during the holiday season, when guests from all over the world converge in the Living Room at The Little Nell to show off the latest in fashion, fur and jewelry.
-
There are a variety of menus and items available to order in-room. Dishes from Montagna Restaurant are available in-room when the restaurant is open, and special late-night snacks are available late into the night. Our 24-hour room service menu features items such as baked mac-and-cheese, make-your-own sundaes and delicious Cuban sandwiches.
-
Ajax Tavern at The Little Nell offers American-style bar food that is popular with children. You’ll find everything from burgers and fries to macaroni and cheese. Montagna also offers an extensive kids’ menu (presented in the form of a cute coloring book) that offers fresh fruit, chicken noodle soup, grilled cheese or peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, mini burgers and fries, macaroni and cheese and spaghetti with marinara sauce. For the more sophisticated child, roasted chicken, grilled shrimp, petite steak, green salad, smashed potatoes and steamed peas are also available. The highlight, though, is dessert: milk and cookies, make-your-own-sundaes and fudge brownies. All items are also available for in-room dining.
-
Your kids will love life at The Little Nell, especially when it comes to room service. Even the most finicky child will find something they like on the Montagna kids’ menu, an extensive offering that has everything from peanut butter and jelly and grilled cheese sandwiches to steak and grilled shrimp. Kids love dessert, of course, but The Little Nell’s room service menu takes it to an even tastier level with make-your-own sundaes, milk and cookies and fresh fudge brownies. Occasionally kids might get an unexpected treat sent up to the room, like s’mores or ice cream cones with sprinkles.
-
Brunch is offered on the weekends at The Little Nell at its onsite restaurants Montagna and Ajax Tavern.

It’s true that the restaurants at The Little Nell are at the physical and social center of the hotel, but they’re also at its heart. The menus are seasonal and ever-changing depending on what’s available, and chef Robert McCormick is committed to using local, farm-fresh ingredients whenever possible. When you visit the Five-Star Aspen hotel, be sure to order these five things:
1. The Double Double burger and truffle fries at Ajax Tavern. This dish is a local favorite. Try washing it down with…
2. New Belgium Fat Tire Amber Ale, a beloved Colorado microbrew.
3. The Wagyu steak at Montagna. Bred right down the road from the hotel, this beef has an unforgettable richness and melt-in-your-mouth quality.
4. Wine. Montagna has an award-winning wine list with more than 20,000 bottles (some worth nearly $20,000).
5. Wine pairing. The staff members at Montagna are experts at this — they’ll be able to tell you the five best choices that will go with a specific dish or course.
-
The Little Nell is located at the base of Aspen Mountain. Many guests choose to walk out our front door to hike up Aspen Mountain. The nearby Rio Grande Trail is a paved trail that runs along the scenic Roaring Fork River and is perfect for jogging or biking.
-
The Little Nell’s luxury Spa and Fitness Center features state-of-the-art strength-training equipment, cardiovascular exercise machines, steam rooms, elegantly appointed changing rooms and highly-qualified massage therapists skilled in a variety of relaxation techniques. Therapists are also available for in-room treatments. -
The gym features two elliptical cross-training machines, two treadmills, one stairmaster, two spin bikes and two exercise bikes.
-
The Little Nell does not offer fitness classes, but if you are interested in a specific type of yoga or workout class, the hotel will probably be able to find one for you in town. Fitness-centric Aspen has enough yoga and Pilates studios per capita to rival any major city, and two state-of-the-art fitness clubs are within walking distance (you can also take a free shuttle courtesy of the Five-Star hotel).
-
Our gym has a full suite of Matrix weight stations, as well as a comprehensive free weight selection.
