Ocean-view bungalows — The Resort’s basic guestrooms — cost $695 a night, though the price can dip to $495 when availability allows. These single-story, 847-square foot rooms with plush beds, sitting areas and large bathrooms are anything but basic. The ocean-view bungalow suites, which are larger at 1,630 square feet, come with a separate living room and cost $945 a night, though they can go for as low as $745. Most bungalows feature ocean views, but there are a few less expensive ones with garden views. If you’re traveling with the entire family or a group of friends, the villas can be quite a deal. 4. The kid-friendly service. The Resort goes to great lengths to customize your stay and suit your family and your child’s tastes. Before you arrive, the hotel gathers information about your kids’ favorite movies, foods, hobbies, allergies, birthday and nicknames. The rooms at The Resort at Pelican Hill — referred to as bungalows — feature private terraces with garden or ocean views, an Italian limestone fireplace and plush, feather-top beds. Like the rest of the Four-Star hotel, the bungalows are quite homey and bathed in neutral shades with lots of cream, tan and light-colored wood. Vaulted wood beams give the ceiling the appearance of a private getaway in Tuscany.

The bed is dressed in white, 500-thread count Fili D’oro linens from Italy and the thick feather-top mattress is from high-end retailer Stearns and Foster. A cream and gold patterned fabric hangs behind the bed in a small alcove and five fluffy down pillows top the bed. A cozy limestone fireplace that turns on with the push of the button is across from the bed.

There’s plenty of seating in the bungalow with a cream, upholstered bench at the foot of the bed, a soft beige couch and a wicker chair. You’ll also discover black metal chairs with tan cushions out on the terrace beneath a large beige umbrella and matching chaise lounges. Glass doors connect the space between the terrace and the room, which really helps bring the outdoors in, but if you don’t want too much light or breeze, just close the wooden shutters.

Should you need to conduct a bit of business, the work area has a small light wood desk that pulls out from a cabinet and two woven chairs are available for additional seating. Just above the cabinet you’ll find your wall-mounted plasma TV, which ranges in size from 42 to 50 inches. With so many amenities, you just might not want to leave.

You’ll find that getting a good night’s sleep is more than easy at The Resort at Pelican Hill, since the beds at the Four-Star resort are plush and luxurious, made up with white 500-thread count Fili D’Oro Italian linens. You’ll feel like you’re climbing atop a cloud with a feather-top mattress from luxury retailer Stearns and Foster and two types of down pillows — one is softer and the other more firm, depending on which kind you prefer to sleep on — plus a golden lumbar pillow and a soft brown throw.

Keeping with the neutral color palette found throughout the Four-Star hotel and in the guestrooms, the bathrooms use light brown-colored wood, light stone on the floor and cream and beige marble.

There’s a double sink with a granite countertop and plenty of storage space below, as well as fresh white towels embroidered with pelicans. Sconces light up on either side of the large, silver-framed mirror and a wooden tray on the counter holds amenities such as tissues, soap and mouthwash. Marble showers are luxurious, with a rain-style head a mosaic tiled floor, a triangular corner seat and two little shelves stocked with high-quality shower gel, conditioner and soap made especially for Pelican Hill by Gilchrist & Soames. 1. Pasta at Andrea. The Four-Star restaurant features a 9 foot by 9 foot, humidity-controlled pasta room that was inspired by the manager’s mother’s kitchen. It’s kept at 68 Fahrenheit so the pasta won’t congeal or become too elastic. Pasta is made daily and selections include classics such as spaghetti pomodoro, spinach ricotta ravioli and tagliatelle with veal bolognese as well as more unusual pastas like Tuscan pici with duck ragout or Baccalà gnocchi with baby octopus, tomato and olives. Top if off with a piece of bread and homemade olive oil for dipping and you’re set to mangia bene.

2. Gelato. Take your sweet tooth and head to Caffè to enjoy some artisanal gelato. The café makes 12 hand-churned flavors daily in its special “gelato laboratory” using a gelato maker from Italy using whole milk, organic eggs and fresh seasonal fruit. Go for the pistachio — it’s one of the most popular flavors.

3. Scallops at Coliseum Pool & Grill. Being so close to the Pacific Ocean with waterfront views in Newport Coast might give you a craving for some fresh California seafood. Head to Coliseum Pool & Grill, snag a seat on the heated outdoor terrace and ask for the pan-seared scallops served with gourmet sides such as mushroom potato hash and spring pea purée.

The Coliseum Pool & Grill offers casual poolside dining with American staples such as pizza, burgers, sandwiches and salads. Open for breakfast, lunch and dinner, the restaurant has a kids’ menu, so it’s great for family dining.

The Caffè is an Italian coffee bar that serves homemade breads and pastries, smoothies, espresso and La Colombe specialty coffee. Head to the glass case showcasing tantalizing treats to find the house-made gelato and tiramisu. A second gelato and coffee bar, Caffè II, is located at the golf club with outdoor-only seating.

If you’re visiting The Resort at Pelican Hill on a romantic getaway, order some sunset bites available from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. — there’s no better way to enjoy them than sitting outside on your private terrace overlooking the ocean. Dishes are tapas-style with selections such as a salami board and artisan cheeses with assorted jams, nuts, fruit and bread. The gym features two rows of cardio machines with iPod docking stations and TVs, including treadmills, ellipticals and bikes, plus free weights and circuit training equipment. The movement room is about 20-feet by 20-feet and plays host to classes such as Power Yoga, Ballet Fusion and Bosu Blast. Every morning at 8:30 a.m. there’s also a hike exploring the beaches and trails of Crystal Cove State Park, which lasts about an hour to an hour and a half.

Don’t worry about bringing anything with you, as the gym provides a ton of handy amenities, including fresh lemon and watermelon water, fruit such as bananas, apples and oranges, cold towels, headphones and magazines and newspapers. If you’re feeling a bit guilty after last night’s midnight room service snack, The Resort at Pelican Hill’s gym features two rows of cardio machines, which you’ll find within the Five-Star spa. The gym has a bunch of treadmills against the wall, as well as three ellipticals and two bikes. But our favorite thing about the gym is that a variety of calorie-burning, heart-pumping fitness classes are offered complimentary to hotel and spa guests. Try the Core Cuts class, which uses fast-paced exercise drills that switch between working your abdominals, chest, shoulders and gluteals to tone and tighten your core. The Whipped class gets you in shape with martial arts, balance movements and the latest fitness training. After your heart-pumping workout, grab a cold towel and sip the fresh lemon and watermelon water or nibble on fresh bananas and apples.

The Resort at Pelican Hill’s gym offers a variety of fitness classes as well as personal training to keep you feeling fit on your California vacation. The hotel’s Five-Star spa features complimentary fitness classes for hotel and spa guests that work on strength training, cardiovascular exercise and flexibility.

The Crystal Cove Fitness Walk departs from the spa daily at 8:30 a.m., taking guests on a walk exploring ocean views, dolphin spotting, tide pools and the beaches of nearby Crystal Cove State Park.
