The waiting area at The Spa at The Grand Del Mar is a luxurious and airy space with windows that face the reception area. There, you’ll find several staffers of who are ready to help. You’ll also see some tempting items on display. When we were there, we got hopelessly distracted by the products by skincare guru Sonya Dakar. We also meandered into the nearby spa boutique, which carries luxe yoga wear, sweet-smelling candles and the Spa at the Grand Del Mar’s own organic skincare line — and this was all before we got to the reception desk.

    • The Spa at The Grand Del Mar is a cell phone-free space, so check your iPhones and Blackberries at the door. This simple rule ensures that you can relax in a serene environment at the Five-Star spa without those ringtones annoying you or other serenity-seeking spa-goers. Besides, you’ll hardly miss it when you are indulging in a facial, sipping a hot cup of herbal tea in the lounge and sitting back in the eucalyptus-infused steam room. We suggest The Grand Del Mar hotel guests simply leave their phones in the room.

    • The Spa at The Grand Del Mar offers some amazing services. In fact, they are among the best in the country. Here are our five favorites treatments at this Five-Star spa:

      1. Manual Lymph Drainage. Focusing on the face and neck, this light, rhythmic therapy is designed to improve the overall functioning of your immune system. The lymphatic vessels play a key role in removing toxins and delivering nutrients, antibodies and other materials to the tissue cells of the body.

      2. Decompression. The invigorating body scrub of organic rosemary is followed by a hydrating body wrap of goat butter while you lie on a warm, free-floating bed. This soothing, luxurious treatment culminates with a customized body massage.

      3. Art for Art’s Sake. An application of warm oil is massaged onto your neck, shoulders, décolleté, face and scalp, which is then followed by exfoliation, warm aromatic cloths and a remineralizing clay mask. This will leave your skin radiant and revitalized.

      4. Sculpted Beauty. Nutrient-rich, mineralizing clay paired with a contouring massage draw excess fluid from your tissues. The results? Toned and revitalized skin.

      5. Expression. The subtle, penetrating heat of warmed stones combine with an herbal salt scrub and a refreshing cleanse with a Vichy shower. Next up? A tonic massage with rich goat butter cream.

    • If you and your other half need to relax together, we can recommend the couples treatments at The Spa at The Grand Del Mar. (You’ll undoubtedly want to head to the couples suite for side-by-side wraps and massages.) Our pick is the Couple’s Classic, a relaxing bath, wrap and massage combo for twosomes. The blissful, two-hour treatment involves a mineral-rich bath, followed by a moisture-intensive wrap and a head-and-foot massage. The treatment ends with a 60-minute rubdown for the two of you. In fact, the treatment is so sensual we’re will to bet it can renew your love faster than a marriage counseling session.

Need a haircut and a massage (kind of like we always do)? The Five-Star spa’s famed Haim Salon can take care of your hair, while the expert spa staff addresses your aches, pains and skin issues. All your spa needs will be met with luxurious treatments like massages, wraps and facials. For a perfect day at the San Diego spa, we recommend a facial, followed by an immunity-boosting Manual Lymphatic Drainage treatment, then a haircut and blowout. You’ll leave with an amazing glow — emergency averted.

    • The Spa at The Grand Del Mar doesn’t lack for luxury. Here are five amenities at the Renaissance-inspired Five-Star spa that we’re still dreaming about:

      1. A soak in the indoor hot tub. Chaise chairs surround this indulgent space, which overlooks an Italian-style lion fountainhead and fountain. While you’ll relish your surroundings from the tub, you’ll also do some good to your body; the mineral water is oh-so good for your skin.

      2. A sit in the steam room. It’s tough to top this steam room, which soothes and refreshes with a heavenly eucalyptus scent.

      3. A lounge in the locker room. The space here is all about swank, with its European-style décor and large framed mirrors. You’ll be treated to spacious digital lockers, plush robes and rubber thong slippers.

      4. A sit in the relaxation area and outdoor terrace. These common areas might be an afterthought for most spas, but not here. The ocean-blue women’s lounge looks more like the den of a European palace, complete with regal furniture like canopy chairs, fireplaces and a pathway of Hermès scarves. Out on the terrace, you’ll find cabana-style chaise lounge chairs that make you feel like you’re soaking in the sun in Monaco.

      5. A refreshments break. You’ll have to stop yourself from overindulging in the buffet of truffles and mini-muffins. The snacks, along with the orange-infused ice water, are the perfect way to kick off a massage or facial.

When we visited the Five-Star spa, we could barely bring ourselves to take it off. (And you won’t have to worry about trying to squeeze your feet into the slippers; when you book your spa appointment the staff will ask for your shoe size.) The thong slippers not only mold to your feet, they also press all the right acupressure points.

However, the Five-Star San Diego spa strongly suggests that you book appointments when you check into the hotel. Indulge in one of these oils and take your facial, wrap or massage to the next aromatic level.

They can get their nails done at the spa’s Haim Salon, which offers a children’s manicure and pedicure. Both of them are toned-down versions of the adult treatments (cuticles won’t be removed, a mild scrub is used as well as a light massage). If you do want your kids to feel like grown-ups, you can treat them to the spa’s signature manicure or pedicure, which includes an herbal extract footbath, exfoliation and a warm oil foot massage.

  • The Spa at The Grand Del Mar doesn’t have a specific aromatherapy massage on its treatment menu. However, the Five-Star spa can customize just about anything. It has aromatherapy blends that have been handcrafted just for the San Diego spa. You can choose among fragrant oils like frankincense, ylang ylang, lemon, lavender, clary sage, geranium, neroli, rose, bergamot, chamomile, rosewood, myrrh, patchouli and rosemary. Indulge in one of these oils and take your facial, wrap or massage to the next aromatic level.
  • Kids won’t be able to indulge in The Spa at The Grand Del Mar, as it only offers treatments for guests 18 and older. However, children won’t have to give up pampering completely.
