Shanghai teems with luxury hotels, but what sets Forbes Travel Guide Five-Star The Peninsula Shanghai apart is its rich history. Founded in Shanghai in the 1860s, The Peninsula brand went on to open four hotels between 1920 and 1948, before the founding of the People’s Republic of China forced them to close. When The Peninsula opened at its new location on the waterfront Bund area in October 2009, it was an exciting homecoming for the brand. For the Five-Star hotel’s soft opening, 18 employees from different Peninsula hotels around the world came to Shanghai to ensure a proper experience for guests. The diverse staff members brought with them an impressive 300-plus years of combined experience. The staff continues to deliver — on a recent visit, the employee behind the check-in desk overheard us talking about a Huangpu River cruise and had all of the boating information waiting for us by the time we received our room key. And when we had an emergency and needed a local cell phone, the concierge easily secured one for us. That top-notch service also makes it different from other hotels.
